This album has brought me to tears on more than one occasion. I love it. I'm kind of glad it's not a huge commercial success. It makes it feel more...mine.
One of my favorites from this album. "Goodbye Max, goodbye Ma, after the service walking slowly to the car" "silver in her hair".....never fails to bring tears to my eyes. My vision of my mother at my father's funeral when I was 7. 55 now and still a crybaby, I am. Ma passed 8 months ago @ 92. Love Mr. Waters as well as Syd.
I love how this album humanizes the teacher character from The Wall. He's worried about his son, sent off to fight in the Falklands, and maybe also facing his past if he served in WW2.
I interpret it as the son died in a previous war, since his picture is in black and white, and the dad is both still grieving his son's death and is distressed that more youth are being sent to die in another new war
Yes, he and Pink in the end had more in common than anyone realized: they are both victims of war, while Pink grieved over the death of his father and never met him, the professor grieves over the loss of his son and has to deal with him for the rest of his life. with the fact that he will never see him again (except in dreams).
He could have been a kind of father figure to Pink, giving the best of life's teachings and both could fill each other's emotional void, sad that Pink only saw him as another tyrant/dictator and the teacher saw him as another boy fragile with no future.
I can't explain why But this song makes me think of My Grandfather . He passed away in 2008. He was a WWII veteran. He used to tell me stories about it. We were pretty close. I still miss him to this day. I have to admit this song doesn't leave a dry eye.

I just got out or the Pink Floyd exhibition about an hour ago. This was playing and I forgot how powerful this song is. I may have been tearing up but I wasn’t the only one.
One of my all time favorite pink floyd songs. The emotion and poetic lyrics is totally beautifull. Pure genius and storytelling in a song. Just beautifull.

A quiet masterpiece for us Floyd fans. Evokes such emotions, with Waters delivering quiet anger that still resonates today. A master wordsmith whose lyrics touch people in a deep and meaningful way, Roger takes you on a journey that ends with the haunting 'Two Suns in the Sunset'. I don't know whether to be sad or hopeful listening to that last song....but what an album....😊
A musically theatrical masterpiece. Well hell, the whole album is, but this song is so well put together, sprinkled with ear candy, that it makes this sound engineer/musician emotional. I love this.
------- lyrics ----- Floating down, through the clouds Memories come rushing up to meet me now But in the space between the heavens And in the corner of some foreign field I had a dream I had a dream Good-bye Max Good-bye Ma After the service, when you’re walking slowly to the car And the silver in her hair shines in the cold November air You hear the tolling bell And touch the silk in your lapel And as the tear drops rise to meet the comfort of the band You take her frail hand And hold on to the dream! You can relax on both sides of the tracks
And maniacs don’t blow holes in bandsmen by remote control
And everyone has recourse to the law
And no one kills the children anymore
And no one kills the children anymore
Night after night
Going round and round my brain
His dream is driving me insane
In the corner of some foreign field
The gunner sleeps tonight
What’s done is done
