it never made any sense to me why they shortened the championship distance to 12 rounds. That's like saying : shortening the marathon, or a formula one race, is necessary to make them safer as well.......
Ray BOOM BOOM Mancini vs Duk KOO KIM Novenber 13, 1982 It was a Saturday afternoon in Novenber 1982, I turned on the television and this fight was just beginning. It was brutal. By the end of the 13TH I was hoping that someone would stop this as both fighters though exhausted and battered showed no signs of quitting themselves. Kim's mother took her own life three months later. The bout's referee, Richard Green, committed suicide less than a year later.I've seen other fights that were equaly brutal especially Ali vs Frazier III where in the 10th I thought Frazier was actually going to kill Ali. By round 13 I just knew Frazier was going out in a body bag. Yet it was Joe Frazier who complained years later when asked about shortening the distance, "what, they don't make thotoughbreds no more".
***** I saw that fight too, & the repercussions from that ring-death were undeniably tragic. But I look at the Kim death as an accident of boxing, & maybe if it was scheduled for 12 rounds, the fighters would've escalated their attacks sooner, with a similar result....there have been quite a few ring deaths that occurred in 12 round contests, or in fights that have been stopped in 12 rounds or less, & they were no less brutal than the Ali-Frazier fight....I remember a title fight between Kiko Bejines & Alberto Davila. It ended in a 12th round KO win for Davila, & Kiko Bejines died as a result of injuries sustained during the bout....12th round knockout....does that mean we should shorten title fights to 9 round contests? You see where I'm going with this don't you? If we keep thinking like this, boxing will be regulated out of existence. Either except the sport, or ban it completely. They don't shorten horse racing when a jockey falls to his death 200 hundred meters from the finish.....I've seen marathon runners close to death - should they shorten the marathon because its dangerous to the runners' health? Boxing will always be dangerous - that's why we respect the courage of its practitioners so much.....I don't feel guilty about liking the sport so much, but that doesn't mean it doesn't sadden me whenever a boxer dies or gets seriously injured....anyway, thanks for your comment - it provided a lot of food for thought.
@@thenameofthegame4037 Yeah many fighters were considered Ali wannabes just for being able to stick and move. They said the same about Jimmy Young. But he had his own style of counter punching that even Ali had a hard time figuring out. Ali spent too much time clowning around for me and rarely ever went to the body. So even though he was very skilled and fun to watch.. I respected fighters like Norton and Holmes a bit more.
I've never seen such an amazing boxing match before. This is the best one so far. Respect both of them. Even though norton lost the title ,hope he earned a load of respect after this
I grew up watching larry holmes he was one of my favorite fighters ever and very under rated, I think he was one of the truly great hw's , he had one of the best jabs ever in the div. RIP Ken Norton, this was a classic fight too thanks for the upload
To lose to Ali and Holmes at their peak is no disgrace. ken was up there with the best. Under normal circumstances he would have had a good reign as champ RIP champ
The Holmes jab is pure art.. Snap, double up, or the touch jab that measures up his opponent for the right.. He skills were underappreciated in his time..
well said! Larry was extremely underated as a fighter. His have as you stated was deadly. Problem was Larry was not the most "eloquent" boxer and as a result gave the impression of being "dumb" which he us not. Larry's a smart businessman and has a thing real estate business in Memphis ( I think it's Memphis, may have the city wrong) and has a normal life. His second fight against Shavers showed how tough he was. This fight was tough for him though, Norton's style gave Ali fits and Larry and Ali both had very similar styles. Difference? Larry had more power than Ali esp with that jab which could slow that goofy "crab attack" thing that Norton would use. ( 😉 Love Norton too though)
Jacon Jones: I'll say it! If you were using one heavyweight as the model for a sustainable champ, an odds-on favorite over a 5-7 year reign (or longer) you'd be hard-pressed to find someone BETTER than Larry as that model. That includes Ali, the G.O.A.T.
He made 20 title defenses, so you’re 100% proven correct.. Holmes was a master of distance.. He knew how to fight at his distance, but he also knew how to change distances to create an advantage.. I’ve watched this fight countless times.. Watch how he closes in on Norton just slightly, every so often.. He did it in the big 13th round, stood like a wall in the 15 and nearly took his man out.. He was a genius.. And he had a solid chin.. A great champion..
Wow, decades later this fight blows me away. Breathtaking stuff. Both fighters were excellent but for me Larry Holmes wins this one and joins other greats including Ken Norton as greatest of all time
Debatable, but Holmes may have been better prepared for this fight than any heavyweight contest in the last 50 years. While he gave away some defense to throw as much as he did, Holmes looked at times like a middleweight with his output. While many in the boxing world waited for Holmes to finally get beat, this was his night above all nights. Respect.
Katis, Thanks for excellent coverage of a great fight. Holmes with his speed and the style of a young Ali, against heavy-hitting and wily Norton. Great contest going right down to the wire!
Man I would hate to fight Norton with his unorthodox style. Larry won because he gave 120% effort and fought a near perfect fight. This is one of the best fights of the late 70's hands down, any weight class.
wtf fight you saw , Kenny dominated easy , Larry thrown a lot of jabs but wasnt effective in all Norton guard block every jabs , and Larry never work the body , he no take the tittle
I've been into boxing since about 8 or 9 . I'm in my 50's now. I grew up watching all these fights on TV ( I think on ABC ) usually" Wide World of Sports ". ( Look it up ). I must've missed this fight though. What a great fight ! That was the greatest era for the heavyweights , 70's. I think the fight was too close for Norton to have lost his title. In fact I think Norton might've had the edge. Back when Championship fights went 15 rounds. Miss those days.
I'm about the same age as you and I also don't really remember watching this fight at the time, and I would have to agree with you that Norton should have kept the title. But it was as close as you can possibly get

Unbelievable fight between a great but aging champion and an up-and-comer who 2 fights ago was still fighting virtually unknown fighters. Larry Holmes had one of the most immediate meteoric rises in boxing history.
I firmly believe if Mike Tyson would have faced this version of Larry Holmes the results would have been very different. Way different. He was Fast, quick, smart. Buster Douglas was no where near the skilled fighter as Larry Holmes, so-. My opinion of course. Thanks for the video!
Anthony Iva I find the boxers that SEEMINGLY exemplify composure and respect with near perfection rare but I it does appear to come through with Ken Norton to me, just seems like an everyday neighborly family type guy only in it as a job. ( on the smaller flip side of it, that does happen to most as they hit a certain age of maturity so not sure of his demeanor at younger times ) A couple others I think showed exceptional manner, from that I saw, would be that of Joe Frazier or George Foreman and maybe even Butterbean from the list of more famous names. The two I plan to look more at are Riddick Bowe and Lennox Lewis, but I recall a few antics from the latter that demonstrated some ignorance. My opinion of Larry Holmes is similar because for the most part he remained gentlemanly to most, especially for such a talent.

I felt he won the last 2 rounds also but lost to many early rounds to win the fight on points it was a good fight nd there was close rounds that could of easily gone Norton way based on him being the effective aggressor and champ but if u take away championship advantage I felt holmes won a close one by winning the majory of the first 9 rounds of that fight
What a great fight. I do think Holmes won it. He just peppered Norton throughout the entire fight. He had Norton hurt in the 13th. Norton never hurt Holmes. He finally got a tired Holmes in the last two rounds, but I thought Holmes pulled in out. Great fight. Too bad there was never a rematch.
I watched Larry train in Easton many a day. He really was an incredible athlete. Personally, I rate him as second best all-time, behind a young Muhammad Ali. Holmes, by the way, sparred with Ali for several years and Ali was a mentor to him. My trainer, Earnee Butler, taught Holmes to box and was handling Larry early on and took him to Deer Lake and many other camps to train with Ali. It was an interesting scene to be around and I still think about it often, all these years later.
What a great jab. That would take my head off before I saw it coming. Probably the greatest underrated heavy in his prime when you talk about the all-time best.
This is the very definition of boxing. Two supremely fit big men with excellent skill levels, particularly Holmes, giving everything they can in order to take the prize. Norton who beat Ali in my view at least twice, is fighting perhaps his best fight since he beat Ali the first time. Holmes in spite of a torn biceps muscle puts his full arsenal on display, including that splendid jab. In a total of 15 rounds there is perhaps at best 3clinches initiated here. Superb footwork, combinations, feints and incredible endurance highlight the athletic demonstration here. Not to mention speed and pace by both men. I had Holmes winning by two points at the end. However in my book no one lost here. BOTH these men are the very meaning of championship mettle.
Thank you sir. The answer to that question is simple. Todays heavyweight division is all about the image. Todays fighters just do not have the talent level, desire nor the willingness to go through for lack of a better word, HELL in order to truly learn their craft. David Haye is a good example of this. While Haye certainly possess the physical talent to make a stake to the top, he lacks FIGHTING HEART. His capitulation to Wladimer Klitschko was embarrassing for the Union Jack. His claim that an injured little toe was the reason for his poor effort was insulting to paying fans. He did not expect the champion to be able to maintain distance effectively and when he did Haye was unwilling to walk through fire in order to reach Klitschkos very vulnerable chin. It wasn't that Wlad was so outstanding, more that Haye didn't want to take the risk of getting caught. Can you imagine Joe Frazier, Shavers, Ron Lyle or Mike Tyson claiming a ticklish toe stopped them from going after the prize that they shed blood, sweat and tears to prepare for? The fact is men of the caliber of Holmes, Ali, Norton and those I mentioned above were of a different era, upbringing and mold. Being champion actually meant more than the money. A novel thought these days.
Curtis Ostriker Right on Curtis, I saw this when it was broadcast, I was 17... I appreciate it even more today. You seldom see top fighters put it on the line like Norton and Holmes did. One of the best heavyweight fights ever.
The old saying was that you had to either knockout the defending champ or at least beat him very convincingly to take away his title. I just didn't see that happen here. It was a VERY Close fight, but in my book that means that it should've gone to Norton. It looks to me like another "fixed decision" against Norton, as was his 3rd Ali fight. And I think that it was for the same reason too, based on who would be the better "cash cow" for future big money fights. Looking back now, poor Norton's biggest drawback is that he didn't have the Star Power outside the ring that Ali definitely had, and as Holmes had also to a lesser degree. But with crooks like Don King running the boxing game back then, what could you expect but crooked fights ??? ... jkulik919@gmail.com
I watched this fight as it happened and couldn't believe what I was seeing. One of the greatest if not the greatest heavyweight title fights ever. I think Holmes should have given Norton a rematch though.

Larry truly came into himself that night as he boxed beautiful with that lazer like jab & fast rights & combos , up against Nortons strength & powerful over hand right . Holmes dealt with Norton a helluva alot better then Ali did in 3 fights against Norton. Great upload. 👍
I have Holmes winning, but don't have an issue with those who give it to Norton. Really comes down to the value you give aggression and quantity vs quality of punches landed. Hell of an effort by Norton, not many guys are going to do well against a prime Larry Holmes
I really like how the commentators respect, and can appreciate these boxers, and what it takes to do what they men are doing. They are full of praise for these boxers!
@Nobby Barnes These guys would destroy the top ten of todays Heavyweights in a week. Sad at what boxing has become today. It's a shadow of its former self. There are still great fighters but nothing like what I remember growing up watching. From the 70s thru the 80s that was Boxings last stand at the Golden era from the 60s and 70s. The 90s were good but on their way to what it is now. A bunch of promoters who won't put their guy in with the competitors guy because they are obsessed with the 0. Also it's laughable how the networks dictate what will happen. The media the Promoters and governing bodies have ruined it. I still love the sport. At its best it's the greatest sport in the world. Also the social media keyboard warriors are so pathetic. Talking so much crap about the other guy because they love their guy so much. I respect every fighter for stepping thru that squared circle. I miss the 8oz gloves and the 15 round fights. Those guys were warriors and a guy like George Chuvalo would be unified champ Right now. He was the toughest I have ever seen.
Holmes banked so many early rounds imo Norton needed a knockout he landed most of the harder punches late but he kept eating shots from Larry consistently each round that jab tho sheesh. Gotta love Norton's heart but this was Larry by 2 or 3 rds
Norton was like Balboa in that last round. He was getting Pummeled and kept coming. I doubt he could remember those last two rounds Ken Norton was an insanely tough man
Holy hell, that was a war. Two tough, strong, well-conditioned boxers standing toe to toe and just pounding on each other. Imagine what 15 rounds of that would do to a person.
See the way the two fighters walk back to their corners at the end of round 4? Legs shuffling. Their stamina, ability to recover is unparalleled in sport! That was a contest at that point!

Larry Holmes is underrated, and Marciano couldn’t carry his jock strap! 48-0 20 title defenses. At 42 y.o went the distance with a prime Holyfield. Only KO'd by Iron Mike and still beat about 20 young dudes after that.
Sanjay Kakurla While true he can’t technically can’t brag bout his win over Ali. He went four rounds with a prime 1988 Mike Tyson. Went a full 12 rounds with. 1992 Evander Holyfield to a decision. And that match against Ray Mercer was epic for his age. Holmes is under rated
I envy people who grew up early 60s through late 70s because of this.So much heart and skill was in boxing especially heavyweight division man! Just amazing to see the competitive spirit!
My heart goes out to both true champions. I can only imagine how deep they both had to dig deep to finish 15 rounds of heavy weight boxing. I hate one had to lose! It could have went both ways!
Larry is so underrated. People saw him as a cheap Ali imitation but he did many things that Ali never did. And he actually had done better against Norton than Ali ever had. He actually used his jab even more than Ali and body punched. Ali never body punched. Can't place him over Ali all time but he is top 5 heavyweight for his defenses.
There hasn’t been a heavyweight since Holyfield that had heart like these two guys demonstrated. The present heavyweights are a joke compared to these guys.

The 70s was some decade for heavyweight boxing. And even towards the end of it we got great fights like this.
The Golden Age of Heavyweights.
15 fucking rounds too!!!
it never made any sense to me why they shortened the championship distance to 12 rounds. That's like saying : shortening the marathon, or a formula one race, is necessary to make them safer as well.......
Ray BOOM BOOM Mancini vs Duk KOO KIM Novenber 13, 1982
It was a Saturday afternoon in Novenber 1982, I turned on the television and this fight was just beginning.
*****
I saw that fight too, & the repercussions from that ring-death were undeniably tragic.
Larry Holmes was an artist, one of the greatest of all time.
Nah he was and is an ignorant morron

@@ScorpionF1RE_USA so every outboxer is a Ali wannabe?
Ali himself was a Sugar ray robinson wannabe?
@@thenameofthegame4037 Yeah many fighters were considered Ali wannabes just for being able to stick and move. They said the same about Jimmy Young. But he had his own style of counter punching that even Ali had a hard time figuring out. Ali spent too much time clowning around for me and rarely ever went to the body. So even though he was very skilled and fun to watch.. I respected fighters like Norton and Holmes a bit more.

The winning mind set'...unbelievable the determination of both Kenny and Larry. OLD SCHOOL STRENGHT & GRIT..a STUDY FOR THE GENERATIONS!
Holmes was a bad-ass, period.
The Holmes jab won this fight
Both fighters were excellent but for me Larry Holmes wins this one and joins other greats including Ken Norton as greatest of all time
Excellent fight... I'm watching for the first time and I'm going to watch again!
A true display of HEART. On both sides
Respect.
I actually thought Norton won but....
Katis,
Thanks for excellent coverage of a great fight.

I must've missed this fight though. What a great fight ! That was the greatest era for the heavyweights , 70's.
I think the fight was too close for Norton to have lost his title.
In fact I think Norton might've had the edge.

Great fight ,Two all time great American heavyweights.
Unbelievable fight between a great but aging champion and an up-and-comer who 2 fights ago was still fighting virtually unknown fighters. Larry Holmes had one of the most immediate meteoric rises in boxing history.
That last round was insane, just insane.
I firmly believe if Mike Tyson would have faced this version of Larry Holmes the results would have been very different. Way different. He was Fast, quick, smart. Buster Douglas was no where near the skilled fighter as Larry Holmes, so-. My opinion of course. Thanks for the video!
This is a fight that could have been called for either fighter without any arguments
Ken Norton was a total class act!
Anthony Iva I find the boxers that SEEMINGLY exemplify composure and respect with near perfection rare but I it does appear to come through with Ken Norton to me, just seems like an everyday neighborly family type guy only in it as a job. ( on the smaller flip side of it, that does happen to most as they hit a certain age of maturity so not sure of his demeanor at younger times )
A couple others I think showed exceptional manner, from that I saw, would be that of Joe Frazier or George Foreman and maybe even Butterbean from the list of more famous names. The two I plan to look more at are Riddick Bowe and Lennox Lewis, but I recall a few antics from the latter that demonstrated some ignorance. My opinion of Larry Holmes is similar because for the most part he remained gentlemanly to most, especially for such a talent.

I have to give Norton credit. I thought he was done after the 13th, Yet he came back to win the last 2 rounds and in my opinion Norton won this fight.
I felt the same way I thought Norton won the last two rounds
I felt he won the last 2 rounds also but lost to many early rounds to win the fight on points it was a good fight nd there was close rounds that could of easily gone Norton way based on him being the effective aggressor and champ but if u take away championship advantage I felt holmes won a close one by winning the majory of the first 9 rounds of that fight
Even through 14, Holmes was more accurate with power shots in the 15th... Holmes wins!

I agree why was there never a rematch
@@jasons2270I think Norton got blown out by Shavers and also cooper. Then they both git a fight with Holmes iirc
the 'whipping' motion of Holmes punches is amazing. Norton one of the all time greats. Holmes agruably the best heavyweight of all time
I watched Larry train in Easton many a day.
Ali is the greatest of all time followed by George Foreman who would have knocked out Larry Holmes if they fought in 1989 as planned

All well said. I really wish we could see men like this nowadays. Surly there still about. Why do the heavy weights of today seem so tame.
Great analysis of the match and also the current situation of the sport. You really know boxing Congrats.
Javier Pacheco I second that.
Curtis Ostriker Right on Curtis, I saw this when it was broadcast, I was 17... I appreciate it even more today. You seldom see top fighters put it on the line like Norton and Holmes did. One of the best heavyweight fights ever.
The heavyweights in those days were quick, strong and didn't look like robots
No PED's no Roids indeed, you are correct !
