- "Torn"
Thought I saw a man brought to life
Yeah, he was warm
He came around
He was dignified
He showed me what it was to cry
You couldn't be that man I adored
You don't seem to know
Or seem to care what your heart is for
No, I don't know him anymore
There's nothing where he used to lie
My conversation has run dry
That's what's goin' on
Nothing's fine I'm torn
I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed
Lying naked on the floor
Illusion never changed
Into something real
I'm wide awake and I can see the perfect sky is torn
You're a little late
I'm already torn
So I guess the fortune teller's right
I should have seen just what was there
And not some holy light
But you crawled beneath my veins and now
I don't care
I have no luck
I don't miss it all that much
There are just so many things
That I can't touch I'm torn
I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed
Lying naked on the floor
Illusion never changed
Into something real
I'm wide awake and I can see the perfect sky is torn
I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed
Bound and broken on the floor
You're a little late
I'm already torn
The people are little late and already torn when they discovered this original.
The first released version was from Lis Sørensen - Brændt. After that they gave it to Natalie Imbruglia. So however you want to say, Ednaswap wrote the song, but just released their version after Natalie.
This 🤣
@@danielsteiner4825 Ednaswap was the first English recorded version. They released Torn in 1995, Trine Rein released it in 1996, Natalie Imbrulia released it in 1997
I’m 47 and just discovered this fact! 🤯
Natalie’s version is the best for me always. Known it’s not original but only today came to listen to this 😃
I actually like this original version. Her voice is fantastic, and the instrumentals fit. I wish the world knew this one
I like it too. Her voice has this grittiness to it that helps make the song sound rawer than Natalie's version. It's the kind of voice I'd hear from an older woman who has lots of experience in love and heartache.
I nod too !
Nodding
@Ben 1st released but originally written by ednaswap
@@truelovewontwait They may have written the song but this recording was released in 1995 a year after Lis Sorenson recorded it in 1994. Therefore this is not the original version
Wow. Never knew the late 90’s version was a cover. This one has a real bite to it that I really like
Yeah, I thought the song was older than the late 1990s. Glad to have the confirmation.
Thank you Rick Beato for making me aware of this original song.
Edit: As pointed out by Dave Birch, although they wrote the song, there is an older version by singer Lis Sørensen which is closer in style to Natalie's.
Just saw his one hit wonders of the 90s. Was not aware of this version either!
x2!

Idem pour moi merci de France @rick Beato
Its kind of a rip off of this from a year or 2 earlier ruclips.net/video/TAaTheN_mc8/видео.html
Ok. I'm 37. I just discovered that this was the original. I grew up on the cover....but now I appreciate this one as I keep growing.
Me too
It's not. This version came out in 1995, but it was first released in Danish as "Brændt" ("Burnt") by Lis Sørensen in 1993.
41 here
This is NOT the original. The first was in Danish, “Braendt” by Lis Sorensen. BUT, Ednaswap is a band formed by the original songwriters.
At 37, I just now learned this.. but this does negate the funny feelings I felt when I saw Natalie lol
I actually like both versions for their own merits. Natalie Imbruglia's rendition has the vibe of watching the sun setting over the ocean while this one has the vibe of sitting in a poorly lit bar swallowing miseries one glass of whiskey at a time.
I had a totally different comment loaded until I read yours. Nice one, perfect summary 🤘
both ? i know seven ;-)

I like how your username is just sonovabitch but had the B an A switched 😂
@@JosephLitanIt's because I'm full of BS :)
I like the raspiness of her voice and the song has more depth with the way she sings it.
It sounds even more 90s
Sounds dates, really 90's. Heard the Singer carrying on on the Stern show. She needs to realise Natalie Imbruglia version took that "destined to die with the 90's" factor out of the equation. A pity nobody did the same for Alanis Morissette.
on the floOH
I like this version, but honestly, Natalie's version hit direct on my heart and makes me feels more the lyrics.
Wow, I was so deep into music at this time, how did I miss that this is the original version? This is so emotional and real. I hope they're Rollin in royalties.
Phil Thornalley, member of Ednaswap and one of the co-writers of Torn, personally gave the song to Natalie Imbruglia. Not only that, but he also produced her cover of the song. They're definitely happy with all the royalties they've received from her version of the song.
@@Jayce_Alexander Thank you for sharing this, it made my heart feel so good.
Because there was no internet to speak of yet. How would you know?
@@ClarkPotterpeople knew about music before the Internet. You'll have to believe me about that
@@bennievargas2673i remember times before internet was an everyday thing, and to be honest i think that it ruined some people knowledge with music. They downloaded mp3 with wrong titles/artists for example, they heard few versions of the same song and were convinced they one they like the most must be the original. I miss the times when forums were more popular, people bought magazines about music, exhanged CD or casettes. It is great to have a source of knowledge like internet, just some folks are too lazy to do fact checking.
It's 1997 you're at a No Doubt concert and they opened for them. I heard them Live I was 16 (I'm 40 now) and her voice was hauntingly Exceptional. I still to this day seek out Ann Preven (sp?). She did Anntenna, another band after that, I can't find her stuff anymore. 😭 I hope to hear more ✨🖤✨
Yesssss. Saw Ednaswap open for No Doubt in Mountain View. I think it was Ednaswap’s last show. I remember her running out into the audience and maybe throwing her accordion out? Haha. Just before the filming of the show in OC.
I was this many years old when I found this.
This is amazing. Stereotypical 90's female vocalist rock with off beat guitar tones. Her voice is excellent as well.
I don't want to compare any artists in this sentence, but you're right. It's that 90s grungy guitar with the female vocals like Alanis. I sincerely miss the 90s more than anything
Please tell me any songs or bands that has the same vibe as this
Her voice is great! The music sounds so simple. Were things this simple back then? It's like, basic. I miss the 90s but this style drives me nuts now.
@@k.h.307 just a fundamental difference of songs tracked by a live band, very little filler of programmed beats and few overdubs
@@dudinrudeboy7912 you might like garbage, alanis morissette, meredith brooks
OMG this is so much better than the cover in my opinion. More rock and just sounds more fun without all the polish the studio did to this song.
It’s also not a love song.
It’s about a mental patient.
My life is a lie. But this is amazing and I love it!
Ednaswap Live was Incredible ! I worked w the band early 90's when they first formed. The guitarist Rusty now plays for McCartney , Carla the drummer tours w Jack White , here is the Real breakdown : I have the demo version by Ednaswap 93 , also, 93 was Lis version , Ednaswap official version 94 , Trine Rein 96 , Imbruglia 97
Any chance of us hearing the demo version good man? Or is it the same as this version?
I only learned today that Natalie Imbruglia's version of this song was a cover, so of course I came to YT to listen to all iterations of "Torn". This one is my favorite by far! I wish this one was the more popular version!
Same, you can feel the emotions in this song in her voice.
Same.
Same. And I swear it has nothing to do with teenage me hating Natalie Imbruglia for marrying Daniel Johns🤞
Just realized today!!
Did you find out from csa punch videos lol
So Natalie's version is a cover. Fuck me, nothing makes sense anymore.
Like everyone here I'm sure. I just found out that this is the original like 2 minutes ago. lol! This is Good!!!! But I guess Natalie put it on the map.
Wow! This originial version sounds much more authentic and layered. Vocals are amazing and delivery of the song has more emotional credibility.
The Natalie Imbruglia rendition converts the song into something much more simple, bland and catchy with her flawless, no-make-up-make-up-style, stunning prettiness sparkling through 90s grunge and ordinariness of filming outakes. Theres nothing wrong with pure pop and posing, but it's really good to hear the source... something I only checked after learning it for an easy-chord, throwaway opener for open mic nights.
(...Am I alone in thinking it's extraordinary and puzzling how Imbruglia just looks so much more attractive with short hair?)
I like her vocals better but the iistrumenalization on the other track. Smash them together and you have a “if it makes you happy” gritty pop song.
Touch grass
@@FirstLast-il6ok Same. I definitely prefer the instrumentals on Natalie's version. Maybe it's just because it seems like the instruments are drowning out the vocals at times.
It's an amazing original. A whole different style compared to Natalie Imbruglias's (which is also amazing)
This is so much better than the popular version. Life is unfair.
It’s ok to like both
So raw and raspy!!! I love it!!!
They cried all their way to the bank
Always wondered why a pop song sounded so good...this is why...respect to the original artist's
Even better!😊
Such a great and well written song. The lead singer has actually co written songs with a friend of mine for Demi Lovato and Lea Michele. It's definitely a beautiful song and better than the more well known cover
Sorry Natty, I loved you, but now the truth is revealed... THIS is the masterpiece!!!!!!!
The lead singer of this band did an acoustic version on her own. This is the masterpiece, in my opinion.
ruclips.net/video/Z6E2whjUOcY/видео.html
Loved this song since 1998.
It's only today I hear the original
@Ben Original of what? which version came first of all the three?
This group have 3 versions all these are the original there is 👎 More jeje
I just went down a rabbit hole with this. Apparently it was first recorded in Danish is 1993 by a Danish singer, Lis Sørenson, then in 1994 by the band Ednaswap (who I can’t BELIEVE I never heard of, they were EXACTLY what I loved in the 90s), and AGAIN in 1996 by a Norwegian singer, Trine Rein. My face is exactly like yours right now.
dont forget, created by 2 members of ednaswap in 91'... they perform lived but never recorded.. in 93' the danish singer received the song from a producer who heard it and make lyrics in danish, recorded it.. 2 years later ednaswap realeased studio version
@@mn-bf6ymSo Ednaswap made the very first one ...
I'm just glad to be among the cool people of youtube
Anne Preven, research that name, she is a top songwriter, working for very famous artists since many years ago,
So basically “Torn” was written and performed by Ednaswap from the absolute start
Original song but not lucky like the Cover
Technically not the original version. This one came out in 1995, but it was first released in Danish as "Brændt" ("Burnt") by Lis Sørensen in 1993.
True but this version is the band the songwriters were a part of, so they can claim it :)
I just found out Imbruglia's was a cover. I think the pain really comes through on this version.
50 years old in a week and today I learned that Natalie Imbruglia's was a cover.
SO MUCH better than the Imbruglia version.... pathetic that she was only ever a one hit wonder and her one hit was a cover of a much better done original song!! Too bad Ednaswap didn't get all the fame during the 90s for their song!
Nope. The original version is Danish.
This version tastes like cigarettes, in a good way, actually
Somehow this is even more 90s than the Natalie imbruglia version.
So sad this version isn't on Spotify. The only torn version there by Ednaswap, is a very slow (but nice) version.
Yeah, I just looked there, and they STILL don't have this original version. Slighty disappointed.
Word
So, is this THE original version, or the slower one?
yeah i was just thinking that! what the heck? this version should be on Wacko Magneto right?
If you love this version wait until you hear the slower version she did on Howard Stern. Incredible. ruclips.net/video/suPEni1CCYs/видео.html
There's a sick mock korn cover of this song. I know it sounds weird
That chord change in the chorus is so good
I like the slow version off wacko magneto the best
The Mandela effect. You guys really believe this version always existed. They are gonna BLOW YOUR MIND when they show you the aliens. 👽
Tik tok informed me today about this original 😅
Knowing this exists has made me re-evaluate my entire childhood.
That’s interesting
Same . But I love these moments. I often find myself liking original versions of songs just a bit more. And this is no different. Adding it to the rotation but in a different playlist since it has a different vibe. Lol😅

Omg i thought Natalie's original
This version is way better 😮
Could hear Pink sing this
How was this not a bigger hit
It was, just not by them.
Rick beato brought me here
I had zero idea that the other version wasn't the original. Brought here by a silly FB meme (Natalie Imbruglia's face instead of Beavis's... It says Tornholio 😆🤦♀️ You're welcome)
Same meme brought me here too.
I'm here cuz of csapunch
Just found out this is the original version and both are great.
This song is good, but incomplete... the chord changes in the chorus on the Imbruglia cover work much better IMO....It's sort of like the song "Hush" was a good song, but not a hit until it was covered by Deep Purple eventually....
Natalie Imbrugila should see this. Totally ripping her off!
So who made the most money off the song?
I only knew just some 10 years ago the Natalie version was a cover but for some reason I totally forgot to check the original version. Only now that Rick Beato mention this song again in his content, went straight here to finally listen to it. And lemme just say, yeah, the original is always the best 🙂
haha! same reason i just went straight here ;-)
Same. But frankly, the vocals are flat out better here. IMHO everything is better except one tiny thing: the third chord in the pre-chorus and chorus is better in the Natalie version. Of course, I'm the minority here, because I love pop chord progressions and everyone else seems to hate them.
@@eliteteamkiller319 This is still a pop chord progression imho, it's just the "less obvious option". Everyone who has ever played in a Rockband knows that moment when some band member (usually the lead-guitarist) says: "let's make it more interesting" and adds some chord that still fits the vocals but just doesn't do the job as good. So I also root for Natalie's version in this regard.
@@HarryMason_85 Yeah, you're right. I should say it's _less_ popular.
Well technically this is also a cover,
This is the Original version of the song in English, The "Original Original" version of the song is in Danish called Brændt and was released in 1993 a year earlier by Lis Sorensen
There's a reason this version didn't become the international hit that the Natalie Imbruglia version became. Production. The vocalist on this version is good enough, but she's not consistent on the melody and the music doesn't do a good job of supporting the melody. It's all over the place. It sounds like a garage band. Nothing wrong with that, I love garage bands. The Beatles were a garage band. But then they got a proper producer, George Martin. And look what happened.
The difference between just singing words versus singing heartfelt feelings you wrote yourself is extreme. 🙌🙌🙌
Without Natalie’s version I might not have been able to experience this so I appreciate both.
Poor version
A meme brought me here
Wtf this is the original?
Hmmm it definitely has a different feel than the version I’m accustomed to but that’s not a bad thing. I’m glad I know though
No sabía que era un cover de Natalie Imbruglia...la versión original me encantó...
The original Grunge version.
So Nathalie Imbruglia wasn’t the original?
This is the order of the song
1991 - Ednaswap writes the song, performs it in clubs around Los Angeles. Later records a demo that remains unreleased.
1993 - Danish Singer Lis Sørensen covers the unreleased demo in Danish as "Brændt" (Danish For Burned). Late Danish Singer/Songwriter Elisabeth Gjerluff Nielsen did the translation.
1995 - Ednaswap releases their version on East West Records. They are dropped from the label shortly after the release of their album.
1996 - Ednaswap signs with Island/Universal and re-records it for an EP called "Chicken." "Chicken's" version also appears on their second album "Wacko Magento", released in 1997.
1996 - Norwegian singer Trine Rein releases her cover. She doesn't have exposure outside of Europe or Japan.
1997 - Ednaswap records it a third time as "Torn (Radio Mix)", intended to be "Wacko Magento's" lead single.
1997 - Natalie Imbruglia's cover of Trine Rein's version (The "Oh yeah" ad libs at the end originated on Trine Rein's Version) is made a single and video by her label and has a massive hit with it.
I'm 44 this year.
I was there when "Torn" tore through the airwaves. It wasn't this "Torn" though...I wished it was.
This is the first time I'm listening to this and it's spectacular.
Holy shit! It feels kinda weird get to know this is the original
"It was first recorded in 1993 in Danish (renamed "Brændt", Danish for "Burned") by Danish singer Lis Sørensen, then in 1994 by Cutler and Preven's American rock band Ednaswap, and in 1996 by American-Norwegian singer Trine Rein." wow so Natalie Imbruglia was the 3rd artist to cover this song, what the heck world am i living in right now?

@@Neurotripsicks This isn't a cover though. Preven and Cutler from EdnaSwap wrote the original song, so they're performing their own song.

Vindo comentar porque descobri hoje que a versão da natalie imbruglia é um cover kk
This song played a big part in my life in 2002. It’s quite a story, but the lyrics resonated so hard for me at the time, literally and figuratively. Someone I knew very well was frontman for a local band and knew this version and the band members. He played this original version for me knowing that I would relate even more to this grittier version. He arranged for me to sing it at a venue where the person I needed to hear it would be, and I did. He knew right away I was talking to him through this song and I sang it as if I was had written and lived every word. I was finally able to say what I wasn’t able to express at the time. Twenty years later, and I still feel its power and am still dealing with the events that made this song so real to me. Emotionally, I am 99% but physically…I will never be the same.
F.U.B.S! You were an illusion.
I think i've never heard a song as 90's sounding as this one! It screams the 90's. I love the progression, from a nonchalant beginning to a vigorous chorus combined with her voice and instrumentals. Love this version.
Just discovered the original (yes I know…) this is waaay better!
The Original One. Good Song.
Oh my..... i thought torn was neckdeep's song😅😅
Nathalie's version was very famous, but I have to say that this one version really is too nice.
I am today's years old when I discover that this is the original singer 🥲🥲
It's like Céline Dion's song It's all coming back to me now. The songwriter wrote it for Meatloaf, but he didn't want it for his album at the time. So it was given to a soap rock group Pandora's Box.
Thank you for that. When celine sang that song, I personally always felt it should be a meatloaf song. Now I know why.
I think this version is darker. Nathalie 's is more romantic.
It's not a romantic song so this version fits much better. It's about being ruined by another person. That's not romantic in any way.
Saw this band live in the 90s and bought the CD, a long time later heard the popular cover version on an airplane. When it became a hit, no one believed me that it wasn't the original. This one is so much better, it's a sad song not an upbeat one.

Wondering how the hell did an entire generation not know Torn by Natalie was a cover song? Who let that happen? Why was it marketed as an Original? Why did noone promote the original band? It's like in 10 years, if Glee songs would still be famous and people will never know they only did cover songs. Originality will die. This makes me so sad.
This is an acoustic version by the lead singer of Ednaswap. This is by far the best version, in my humble opinion.

I can see why some people prefer this version. Her voice is more coarse versus Natalie's crisp and clear voice. She is slightly off key which makes it sound more emotional perhaps. It's cool to hear the original. So sad this was forgotten and overridden by Natalie's version. But for me I'll stick with Natalie. Her version sounds more pleasant to the ear for me. But the original should have gotten WAY more recognition. No one knows about it.
