We have the 70L and 100L, work great for bike tours and car travel / camping. I like the larger sizes but wouldn't take them on trips where I needed to carry them packed out. I like the look of this 40L for one bag travel. Adding it to my wish list.
I generally love Patagonia as a brand. But for the duffle/backpack bag I've found that the Eagle Creak Cargo Duffle work a bit better with medium sized side pockets and side grab handles. The straps are slightly more comfortable also. I took it for a two week trip trough the UK with all train travel and it worked exceptionally because it fits on the smaller shelf above the seats on the train. The Osprey is also a better option, though I've never used it for a long trip.
Just got mine 55L delivered 2 days ago....I was doubting between balck and this one. Happy I got this bleu one....matches well with black but looks just a bit more classy than black I think. I use it for gym/brazillian jiujitsu gear. Didnt find the 40 litre bag online though.
I own this bag in the previous 45l Version, also in navy. It actually has a bright orange liner similar to the outside Patagonia logo. I use it as a gym bag mainly, and also for groceries tbh :D. Also really nice for Car Travel/Camping. It obviously isn't a good backpack though. So for a Onebag SEA-Trip I would definitely recommend an Osprey Farpoint kind of bag over this...
I quite like Patagonia bags and have several. They’re well designed, very durable and I like the look. Really annoys me that Patagonia never use lockable zips though - it’s a big negative for me.
Lockable zips are overrated. They have not made a lock that would prevent anybody getting into your bag in couple of seconds. The only thing locks on a bag achieve is put a huge target on it saying "MY OWNER THINKS THERE IS SOMETHING VALUABLE IN HERE".
@@leonardmilcin7798 I just zip tie bags anyway. It’s just about dissuading a thief from rooting around your bag… or someone tampering with it (worst case - putting drugs or something in it). End of the day, a thief could take a knife to a soft sided bag if they wanted.
Hi.. I really liked your video. Awesome explanation. I am in the market for my new bag and I can certainly use your suggestions. Can you please suggest some options like all-in-one for Gym/Hiking/Weekender and padded compartment is must for 16" Macbook Pro. I prefer North Face but its doesn't have to be. :)
Too bad for you, I will be using it for groceries anyway lol My last bag was cheap but had a rigid removable bottom insert that was effective, maybe I can find something similar to put in here. But mainly I do use it for travel, so I needed something strong. I wanted to look at Sea to Summit duffel but couldnt find one in a store in my area, so I compared the North Face base camp bag to this one. I loved the side pocket of the NF, but I didnt like that it didnt seem possible or at least easy to take off the backpack straps, which I dont really need for 95% of needs. The NF also had a smaller butt as it was more rounded and I didnt like that. I can imagine it being even worse for groceries and my kind of packing, especially if I can find something to put at the bottom for rigidity. I guess that was the 2 things. But really, it was hard to find a bag that fit everything perfect, so no regrets.
2 questions. Can it attach to the Patagonia wheeled duffel? Is it small enough to go on a flight as hand luggage? Any help/advice would be much appreciated.
I have the 55L and I fold it up into the pouch to store it, it’s not too hard to get in there if you fold it right. Thanks for showing me how to use the backpack straps! I couldn’t figure it out
Thanks for the bag review, this duffle looks great!! Maybe you can make a video about different sizes: I wonder whether a 100l version is appropriate for a family trip.

What are your thoughts on this for car camping? I've got a 2P tent, sleeping bag, pad, and other odds and ends, but I haven't really figured out a way to easily transport this gear from car to site. Would it stand up to light abuse in the outdoors? How about cleaning it if it gets a little funky?
Hey Billy! The TPU coating makes cleaning a little easier and we haven’t noticed any durability issues so far. We usually get a lot of scratches on TPU and tarpaulin-like material like this, however, we haven’t run into that on the Black Hole Duffel so far. We also recommend checking out the Durability and Testing section in the full review to see our experience using this pack for different use cases. packhacker.com/travel-gear/patagonia/black-hole-duffel-bag-40l/ - Rebecca
Hey guys, love your channel 👍 would be awesome if u could do a video about packing (and needed equipment) a 75L backpack for traveling through different climate zones. I'll visit this coming Aug till Oct Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia (very hot, very wet) and Australia (South to North and West - cold and hot). Quite tricky to pack a backpack for such a journey and pick the proper equipment 😉. Cheers
Hey Notechis! We currently have no plans to create a packing video for a 75L pack, but I'll pass your suggestion onto the team and we'll check it out. We also recommend taking a look at our Packing Lists packhacker.com/packing-list/ and Guides packhacker.com/guide/ to give you some more gear suggestions and tips. Hope this helps! - Rebecca
I was thinking about getting this until I saw it in the airport. Its to flashy to me, and that oversized Patagonia logo screams money, especially when traveling in less developed places around the world.
I really found it difficult and heavy as handle mode if it is full, even just walking short distance (I am 5'11' 190 lb male). I bought it to use as a two-bags travel mode with my other backpack, and I realized that without shoulder strap it is useless for me. I am looking for the similar size duffel with shoulder straps now 😹
What bag do you travel with?
I did not make decision which one should i buy.

I use the Osprey Farpoint 40, after watching your review of it. Used it on several trips, great bag
Osprey Transporter Carry-On 44, perfect bag for me, or the Osprey Arcane Duffel 30L for shorter trips
I love my douchebags carryall 40L, is a duffel that actually looks good on backpack mode.
Really appreciate you guys having Lauren wearing the pack for reference for us on the shorter side! Awesome vid!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!

Can you connect one of the backpack straps diagonally to act as a single strap?
you can but its not exaclty a crossbody configuration.
Did you try it now? How did it work? Thinking of getting this but really wanted a shoulder strap for it to kinda crossbody it.
I doubt between 40L or 55L, which one do you recommend?
What size litre packing cubes did you get? Looks like a perfect fit for 3

I’m struggling between 40l bs 55l I want to get the 40l but I think I’ll be too small vice versa
What is the most comfortable duffel/backpack hybrid you have used? and do you have plans to review the Monarc Settra Duffel?
Had it for years and rarely use it. Tough as nails but only useful for specific circumstances.

Can you re-review the YNOT Viken? a 4-year update would be great for that particular duffel.
Hey Duncan! We currently have no plans to review the YNOT Viken in the pipeline, but it's on the list. 😊

Will this pass as a carry on on a flight? Specifically Spirit
Yes

What was the 3rd way of handling the bag, by the top handle, as a backpack, was the third point made?
I can’t decide between this or the CotoPaxi 35L backpack 🤔
Thanks for the bag review, this duffle looks great!!
Maybe you can make a video about different sizes: I wonder whether a 100l version is appropriate for a family trip.

Just so I have an idea of space, are those packing cubes used at 9:28 large or medium?
Hey! These are the medium Patagonia Black Hole Packing Cubes. packhacker.com/travel-gear/patagonia/black-hole-cubes/ 😊

Nice video - exactly what I was looking for 👍
Thanks for watching! 😃

Will this do for 5 day travel?
Would this duffle fit a 15.3 inch laptop in a sleeve at the bottom (so it doesn't interfere with backpack carry)?
Could you do a review on the Baboon to the moon go-bag small?
I'm searching for some 40L bag for travel. U think this is the best option or is there some better ones ?
Ik im late but I love your videos keep it up man
Will a 15 inch laptop be able to fit into that opening? Great video btw! 👍

Has anyone used this for backpacking? It looks like its dimensions should fit in hand luggage.
happy with mine.
Why was this discontinued?
It’s not, Black Hole is their line of bags from Fanny packs, duffels, backpacks, and more.
I have a 40l I think next time I’ll go with sea to summit’s offer
What size Patagonia cubes have you used?
Hey Adam, these are the Medium Patagonia Black Hole Cubes: packhacker.com/travel-gear/patagonia/black-hole-cubes/

it is literally impossible to get it back to pocket size

Thanks for watching, Joe!

Gonna sweat pretty bad with that material.
that color is horrible with the glaring red logo, i got the black one, as their were only those two options.
I hate walking around being a moving billboard for a company. Those ridiculous giant logos .....Nope. Patagonia, if you want me to be a sign, pay me.
then don't watch a video on it lol
Very few products wont have their brand logo on it somewhere, and somewhere prominent at that. Name a single car without the company logo. Etc.
What bag wouldn’t have it that’s the same quality
