We backed away and tried to talk it off the trail for over 100 yards. We had bear spray ready but since no aggressive behavior was displayed, I didn’t use it. It got about 5 yards away from us when he finally, and gracefully, bounded up into the woods. If he had gotten within 5 yards, I would’ve sprayed him regardless. Nature is lit.

Whew glad you both took the precaution. Being on hikes like these always can be a reminder that nature is NATURE, you're vulnerable out there but it sure is beautiful.

What should you do if you don't have best spray

    • @BorealBen
      @BorealBen  2 года назад +21

@@a7suspended4 it depends on the bear. This was a black bear so it’s recommended to make lots of noise and to try and appear large and menacing. If it does try and attack, fight back. If it’s a Grizzly bear (hump on shoulders, dished in face and short/round ears), you should back away and make sure your presence is known. If the grizzly bear is aggressive, drop a backpack and try to remove yourself from the situation (he’ll hopefully be curious and examine the backpack). As a last resort for a grizzly, play dead, curl up in a ball and cover your neck, then wait for it to go away. All in all - carry bear spray.

Brown bears are very territorial and protective of their babies. So often their aggression displays are just to chase you off.
Black bears are not so territorial and actually mother black bears are not very protective of their cubs. So when a black bear is charging you, it's likely because it wants you for food, not to get you out of the area.

For everyone watching this: talking to a potential predator which is following you in a calming and inviting voice, and talking about how beautiful the bear is, is not the right move.
From the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources:
"If a bear follows you, act boldly: yell, raise your arms and throw things directly at it. The more persistent a bear is, the more aggressive you need to be. If you have bear spray, use it. If a bear attacks or tries to make contact, fight for your life."

Black bears can range from a blonde/cinnamon coloring to black. You can tell it’s a black bear because of the elongated/pointed ears, longer face, curled claws and absence of a hump. A grizzly bear would have shorter-rounded ears, a dished in face, straighter claws and a hump on its shoulders.

Why do people always say “Hey bear” in all these bear sighting videos? Did a bear expert tell them that that prevents you from getting killed? And why not “WHOA!” or “BACK IT UP!” or “GRRRRR!” (not that I think any of this will work) but why specifically “Hey Bear” in every bear video? Is it just an involuntary reaction when you see one you say “Hey Bear”? It sounds as if they are persistently trying to greet the bear and that his name is in fact, Bear.

It is a black bear. Black bears out west come in a wide range of colors.

Sweet talking a bear is not a winning strategy.

Well, they survived, so it seems to be a winning strategy.

No excuse for letting the bear get that close.

He was saying “Hey Bear” to make attention of himself to stay safe while backing away. He wasn’t interested in making friends with a bear as much as you would like to think so.

2 shots in the air and then 14 in the bear.

Now come on, this might of been a warning shot situation, but no need to kill the bear. This might actually be an acceptable time for bear spray. Then if that don't work, the 10mm comes out

Little trigger happy, Glade Goodrich? No need for that based on this footage. Bear needs to get where he's going and some people happened to cross paths with it.
