Love/Hate this so much. I have watched this and the full documentary several times. I just hate that it was never completed. His speech before the Senate is one of the best pieces of film I have ever seen, bar none.
I agree. With what is here it would have been a true classic. I'm glad we have this. Epic scene where charles give this speech. Thank you for commenting and watching.
I watch it at least once or twice a week. My views don't count so I watch a lot. I enjoy it very much. Yes, what an epic it is even now. :) Thank you for viewing.
Wonderful, it's on par with the BBC production, Laughton is the perfect Claudius. The scenes show what a faithful adaptation to Graves's books this film version would have been. What a great loss to the world of Cinema this was not completed.
The Epic that Might Have Been. Laughton is brilliant inspite of his moments of self-doubt. Robert Newton is seen briefly but effectively, Emlyn Williams is Hilariously malignant as Caligula. Flora Robson is made-up 3 times her age as the old Empress. And the lighting/camera is shimmering and magnetic.
22:23 nice shot of one of the most beautiful ladies who ever lived, Merle Oberon (part Maori; star of Wuthering Heights and The Scarlet Pimpernel) as Messalina, before a car accident to her caused the movie to be cancelled -- alas.
@@HookLineSinker4343 Your Welcome! I did not know that, I'm surprised that would be in a 1930s picture. There seems to be no casting for Drusilla or Agrippina (Caligula's sisters) but maybe they were never realeased
Since this is the story of I Claudius the story of Caligula was done. I think I remember it being in that other ruthless Emperor of Rome movie, Nero? Still, the 1979 Penthouse Caligulas movie explicitly filled in all the other details away from censorship.
I only found this recently. Pity it was not completed. If you have never seen the BBC serial version from the 1970's with Derek Jacobi and John Hurt - it's fantastic - especially when Claudius is an adult and Derek Jacobi takes the role - it's all online (free): ruclips.net/video/oEeXcJZEATU/видео.html Here is Derek Jacobi's speech to the Senators, after the Army makes him Emperor - the same part that Laughton portrays in this. I think Jacobi does a wonderful job: ruclips.net/video/cTjRZBjH8Hs/видео.html
After seeing recently the TV adaptation got a shock seeing the public mocking scene of Claudius in this movie: looks like a very weird scene far from the funny elegance of the TV adaptation. I had to read the book to see if Robert Graves wrote something like that. In general everyone praises this incomplete movie but at first looks like were plaged by bad decisions, is not a surprise Emlyn Williams said Merle Oberon's accident was a Godsent thing because made producers to left the movie unfinished.
Production had likely been suspended before getting to that scene. It would have been complicated to shoot and edit in any event. Merle Oberon's car accident and injuries gave everyone a way out of what had become a frustrating learning experience---and what a damned shame. This could have been a crown jewel in so many careers.
I'd love to have seen this finished. It might have ended up just as good, or maybe even better, than the TV version. I do prefer the silky murderous Livia from the TV series to this, though.
In so many performances, Laughton always “knocked it out of the park” with his performances.

Wouldn't it be great if AI could be used to finish this film?!
@@buddyt4297
Surely the true single purpose of AI. Then promptly, and permanently, switched off.
I could watch that speech by Laughton over and over again. Just stunning.
Yes, I watch this short 'film' every night... Thanks!
Absolutely fascinating.
Thank you!
The soldier’s reaction as he realizes Claudius is not as stupid as he thought is priceless.
More realistic than any multimillion dollar epic from Hollywood..🙂
Yes..Its one of my favorite fast watches. :) Thank you!
It's a tragedy this wasn't finished. Thank you for posting.
Yes, it's a loss not having the whole epic. Thank you!
Am... am I dreaming? I never knew this existed! One of my favourite actors, one of my favourite books... what might have been...

Laughton's speech to the senate is brilliant. Too bad they never finished it.
yes, brilliant section of the clips.
I see so many reminders/similarities of these characters in Quo Vadis (1951).
So sad , it would have been a masterpiece.
What there is of this movie is very haunting.

WOW! Absolutely mesmerizing!

Emlyn is fantastic! The whole cast is wonderful. Thank you for your interesting comment!
Tony Hancock used to do impressions of Newton and Laughton. Great to see them together here.
Juat WOW -Even the Great 1070s version can not compare
i watch this almost every day.
Superb 😎😎
Very nice indeed my friend. Thanks for sharing.
Great footage.
Thank you, Sterling!

Sorry..was on another account!
She was part Indian, English, Irish and Maori. Obviously a good combination if her beauty is anything to go by!
I wonder, were they ever planning to show Caligula's sisters and his disturbing relations with them, and Claudius later marrying his niece?
Interesting.. I know they had an orgy scene. So much to wonder about with this picture. Thank you for bringing up these points.

uh...I don't think British censors were ready or willing to allow Claudius' 'domestic details' in a 1937 film project.

Thank you, Doug!
Looks like a classic
So sorry I'm late..youtube isn't doing very well at letting a person know they have a comment! Thank you it is a wonderful collection of clips.
Thank u!

Why didn't we got shown "senator" Incitatus ? which was such a stunning scene in the 70's "I Claudius" series.......
I wish we had seen that too! Thank you.

Did they even have enough room in the studio to bring a horse in there. You know the old saying never work with animals or kids
Well, it makes it a little more historically accurate: Caligula didn't make Incitatus a senator, he only said he would as a joke.
CL seems on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
Yes...he had a very hard time with this role. Thank you!
Merle Oberon went through the wind screen of her chauffeur-driven limo. What was she doing in the front seat? Alex Korda was her "mentor"
interesting .... great question. Thank you!!
i like Derrick's characterization better.

Claudius was a sly person.
very much so!
Correct!
