Putin did not allow any non-loyal candidates to the ballot, he got rid of them beforehand, so essentially there was nothing to split. Plus in Russia the election committee usually falsifies the results just coming up with a number that will satisfy the government anyway, so voting results don't show anything, and that's what iran can probably do as well if the ayatollah doesn't want to see a reformist as a president

Raisi's death wasn't mysterious, it was just unexpected. Lacking any evidence contrary to the official explanation, it's the simplest to accept. Plane trouble can happen to anyone in a storm. @@alex_zetsu That's one way to look at it, but another perspective is that every "president" since the regime took over has lost all of their credibility even someone like Khatami. Every president spoke against Khamenei after their term was over. They all said the same thing which was that the supreme leader has the final say and they couldn't do anything or make real change. Every president was viewed as incompetent and lost support.
In 2021 Khamenei cleared the path for Raisi to be president which was very obvious to everyone even before the election in 2021. Khamenei knew that regime supporters and so called reformists will blame Raisi for everything, and a huge campaign started against Raisi to make him look like an uneducated idiot that can't even speak properly (which wasn't hard to do).
Raisi was also removed from Isfahan's religious council. From the very beginning it was clear that Raisi will be blamed for decisions Khamenei makes. The only difference between Raisi and all other presidents was that Raisi couldn't speak out even after his presidency, because if he spoke out against Khamenei it would remove any changes of him becoming the next supreme leader.
If Raisi didn't become president, he wouldn't have lost his credibility within the religious councils or the population.
Thus because very obvious when the "Osolgara" or the hardliners started to indirectly amplify criticisms against Raisi instead of ignoring it, by having weak responses to against Raisi's criticisms on social media, and specifically IRGC telegram channels.

    • @shawnrocki

Given that all presidents in Iran have served 8 years, and the fact that Khamenei's doctors audio regarding Khamenei's health have leaked, and how his given so much drugs and meds just for when he gives a speech. Jalili aka Mojtaba would make sure Mojtaba is the successor. Which is why Ghalibaf aka IRGC could not take presidents, because of Ghalibaf because president IRGC would've had total control on the day that Khamenei dies, which would've flipped the power to IRGC.

I think this is great, honestly. I hoped for low turnout, but mainly because I had no expectation of a reformist winning. Pezeshkian does not have any realistic chance of changing Iran's political direction if he is elected, but that will only further tension with the regime. If he pushes for reforms, he may fall out of favour with the regime and be punished, leading to outrage amongst the Iranian public. If he is successfully leashed by the regime from the get go, that will also outrage the public who will be given a clear signal that reform through elections is impossible.

Pezeshkian is a puppet of the regime. Most 'reformists' are. It's as good as the 'other parties' in China and Russia. If anything, he'll merely be a farce to pretend that the regime may slowly effect change while it does nothing but continue to consolidate more power within and without its borders. People believed in Khatami and the 'reformists' at least a decade ago but have now more or less realized the farce. So this is a lame attempt and further shows how out of touch with the public these mullahs and their generals are.

Honestly don't know if having the token reformist candidate win is a good thing for the Iranian people or not?
Surely the sheer about of civil disobedience, riots and out right revolt seen in recent Years coupled with a peace protest in not participating in what is clearly a phoney election could like to more radical measure such as a revolution to kill off the weird old religious supreme leader dictator guy in charge and create some kind of real democracy within the county better than having people believe their vote holds any weight whatsoever?
I mean granted most revolutions don't exactly end in democracy anyway (as seen by Irans complete lack of one today despite having previous revolts etc.) but does allowing people to essentially live under theocratic doctoral rule with no hope of getting more freedom beyond token gestures like letting women not wear a headscarf do anything to actually help the people living there? Let me know if I am Wrong in the comments because I genuinely would like to know what is the most efficient way to have a democracy

It still has a system. Iran is an illeberal democracy and there are vying factions under the umbrella of the constitution and the irgc that seems to have become the real power behind the scenes, like big corps in America.
The Iranians systems is to be quite frank, the spitten image of the US system, just a but more authoritarian cause liberalism is not their thing.
There's quite a few people in the regime who want to focus on Iran becoming a better place and let's be real human rights are a privilege countries that want to challenge the west and are still developing just can't afford, even then they have their own vision of human rights. The whole discussion in Iran are mainly 2 things: "more transparency of the government and less corruption, and not wasting huge amounts of resources to maintain unnecessary dogma. Theocracy can have a symbolic role but it is becoming less important and pragmatism and the chinese model seem to be the future.
I want you all to know that ni matter whi wins Iran will always stay on the side of the East, just as no matter who wins European elections the countries stay the suckers of the US geopolitics is not dictated by people and will never be.
Frankly the only country where geopolitics is even partly up to debate is Iran😂.
Quite an interesting place and still an interesting system. It is still a rules based society with a degree of separation of powers and enough authoritarianism to hold the country together in hard times such as these. Despite all the bs the regime pulled, Iran is more advanced than most countries in the Region except for Turkey and Israel. The gulf states don't count they are just parodies of the 21st century
