- Two days back the video of Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan assaulting his 'Shaagird' went viral triggering an important discussion about the Ustaad/Shaagird Guru/Shishia culture. Does being a guru or mentor give you the right to assault and physically punish your students? When does this culture of learning turn toxic? I asked Ahmed Jehanzeb this question before the Rahat event took place and we both agreed and disagreed

I've been an advocate of a western approach towards mentorship. But the mentor can be wrong. And he/she certainly doesn't deserve "Parent" like reverence, and even if he/she does, that's earned, but should not be just expected. I'm sorry, I just don't agree with this aspect. The point of Mentor and mentee relationship is to preserve and expand the craft, not preserve the culture. Cultures can be corrupted, like everything else.
Totally ri8.. also host was trying to say it too

I think Rafay bhai is not against ehtaram of ustaad. He admires that, he have problem why ustaad have issues if shagird forgot to bow or touch ustaad's feet.Ustaad is already at great maqaam. That shouldn't bother ustaad.
the world will never be perfect, it can only be handled subjectively
its guru chela culture
Sir correct respect is other thing and a ustad treat his chela like friend not beat him like enemy 😢
