I have a booth at an antique mall. Little known fact, and they don’t advertise it, but they are sometimes authorized to take up to 20% off if the customer asks what’s the best price y’all can do. I never knew.

Living and Growing up in Dallas Texas I have seen about 3 comic stores close up. A lot of the owners had to close because of sales diminished. Right now there's only one Comic Shop that survived the bailout and closures- Duncanville Book Store. They have been around since the middle 70's. Shop Changed owners around the early 2000s. Worked for them about 4 years. They are still going strong.

Dude.... I ALWAYS seek out antique malls and shops everywhere we go. That is one of the best ways to find a steal of a gem. Yeah, you will have your junk, but I have found $100 books for under $20 over the past few years. I have also found several $10-$40 books for $1 at them. It can be hit and miss though. Its all about luck. Mark Jewelers can typically be found.

My problem with your average antique mall comic offerings is when ya come across the vendor that has a couple boxes full, with each and every one priced at $5. Now, mind you, someone who is knowledgeable would know what to look for, what you might get a good deal on. Me, though? I wouldn’t know a $20 book if it bit me on the ass. I’m just trying to fill obscure Indy runs, or buying somethimg cuz it looked cool. Most of the books marked $5 across the board are dollar books at best. Basically, it goes like this for me. If the vendor has dollar books, I’ll buy at least 20 on principle basically. If ALL the vendors books are $5, I literally won’t even look at them.

Definitely check antique stores for comics. They're seldom high grade, but you can still find mid grade goodness from time to time. Got a FF Annual 6 for $15 and a Superman 233 for $10 at different stores over the last several months. Deals are out there; just be sure to keep some extra bags and boards in the car. LOL

Bravo to you for not buying comics, just to buy comics! It's tough but knowing when NOT to buy is just as important as knowing when TO buy a comic. Many newer comic book shop owners think: I have 10 thousand comics in my collection, I'll use those to start my back issue bins and the new books will take it from there. Nope. Your awesome 10K books will sell in 6 months to a year, then your have about a year and a half of downsliding sales to realize, hey I'm losing money! Then you buy collections to restock your back issues, they sell out faster than your new books which are now gathering dust and since you ordered 50 of each to get the retailer variant, well 30 of the regular issues are stagnating there, unsold.

It was so weird for you to say Marietta Ohio and mention Comic Sense, I'm from Marietta/Belpre area and I've gone through every single antique shop with friends and family all the time. So yes a lot of the comics have been picked through here. Those Comics you've seen at those antique malls have sat there for years. The thing with Comic Sense for me was that I had gone to his shop a few times and was around when it first opened, problem is he only stuck to new books, he didn't go to cons, he had "graded" books but none that were very liquid, he didn't really do any sort of deals for customers and only had very few keys ever if any, oh and all the dollar books that you never needed. I wish his shop would stay because I got a lot of back issue books from him on some ongoing new series but what can you do when you're only spending $10-15 every few weeks at a shop.

I've haggled at antique malls, but only if I were to buy $100 of comics, have gotten a 15% discount. It doesn't hurt to ask, and many guys who own the comics have told the person running the antique mall that they can give a discount for large purchases. I've even had them call the owner of the comics and gotten approval for a discount.

It is tougher today to find the comics in the wild. It's also vanishingly towards impossible to find books in those types of Antique malls. It's a hobby. The shops like the one you featured will ultimately be bought out by Mile High or one of the other heavy hitters...like when Walmart practiced spoke and hub, literally killing off every mom and pops in the Central and Mid-west, they meet at ComiCons and swap between themselves. They don't necessary fix prices, but if you corner the market, you can sit on the inventory and adjust the spicket to your liking. Being the 1st in gives you practice and experience the newbie shop owners lacks (under 5 years). You already know the pitfalls. I did like Swagglehaus's video today for SDCC. You see loads of Tweens and teens buying books from the dealers. That's a good thing...though if a tween is dropping 48K cash for ASM129, you and I need better jobs 😂🤣

I believe the collector market is strong. People looking to fill runs are willing to dig through bins and pay $1-$5 and think they are getting a deal. Shops charging $10-$25 for issues just because the guide says that is the price are gravely misinformed and are doomed to existence.

Nexus is a great read. They might not be very valuable, but the stories and
Steve Rude art is awesome. Any of you younger readers should check it out. Assuming
the antique mall is asking a good price.
In the antique mall, you did pass by a Ironjaw # 2 I couldn't tell the condition or see the
asking price but it is a Neal Adams cover and about 7 bucks in VG condition.

I am an OG that was a partner in a comic shop at one time in 1980s...we had to diversify and handle a lot of different items...role playing games, sportscards, etc. And had to promote a lot (advertisement and promotion in media, etc) plus have good access. Order pulls usually required a discount and you always had people who wouldnt pick them up and they have life changes etc. You can tie up a lot of operation funds in buying stock and a lot can become deadstock, fortunately we moved a lot of older comics and sportscards. However, I can see with quality of new comics and low printage (low collectors and low distribution in other outlets also) where the demand is not same now. Has to be a struggle to survive in a smaller market town like Marietta Ohio....I am a marbles collector so have been in that area in past.

I'm always on the hunt for new antique shops whenever we are travelling, and I even have a booth that I rent at our local antique mall where I sell comics - but at least mine are bagged, boarded, and in boxes so you can look through them easily. That stinks about the shop you visited - ours seem to do well here, but the big one needs to shut down for a month or so and do some serious cleaning and remodeling...

That’s the only way I like my little LuLu’s packed to the brim
Archie has great history if you like Josie and the Pussy Cats great Hanna Barbera cartoon Sabrina the Teenage Witch
I’ve eyed that Scarlet Witch statue myself they always seem to offer free shipping when I don’t have the money for it but ya the price being close to retail is not a fast moving price
Maybe if it wasn’t available from sideshow anymore then sure you could probably get that price
Definitely a shame back issue hunting hasn’t been fun ever since my shop stopped doing 50% off back issues I wanted an Avengers 200 but it was priced $25 in the back bins and it’s at maximum a $12 raw book
They had a bargain book sale and I got some golden age Wonder Women trades but I’m very done with new books Marvel is going to $5 a book in October and it’s not justifiably worth it even if it’s a cover buy I won’t do it
I went to a card shop yesterday got some Pokémon cards wanted to try getting back into it guy threw in a $25 booster pack for free and card sleeves with the purchase so I’m going to open those and hopefully get a few good cards
I don’t want to say I’ve fallen out of love with comics but affordable collecting looks to be almost nonexistent

Why do I mention this? Because the first spec book I ever bought was the first issue of O.G. Whiz. Swear to God. It’s long gone from my collection but didn’t exactly turn out to be the next Amazing Fantasy 15, haha.
