    Yup. Just send up an empty Space X capsule and bring them home. Then send the "starliner" back on it's own and see what happens to it. If it fails, then "The Big B" should be fired...

    • @patkelley4071
      @patkelley4071 24 дня назад +11

      No need for the capsule to be empty, as the Dragon has four seats for normal operations, and can handle up to seven in an emergency. One issue that might be a minor challenge is the compatibility of the Boeing pressure suits with the Dragon life support. An adapter would have to be constructed, but that should be done quickly if needed. In a real emergency they could come back "shirtsleeve" mode, which should be safe, given the Dragon's safety record so far.

    1: I agree, find another way home for these two. They've already spent their risk budget.
    2: Repeat failures like this are grounds for NASA to cut them off. I agree with many others that this should run as a cargo ship until they get things sorted. Spacex had that experience, and it showed.
    3: NASA will ignore this. They focus on the details and won't see the trend. It's also too expensive and potentially crippling to one of the few big airspace firms left. Didn't we learn that nothing should be too big to fail?
    4: I think the return will be safe if they do it. Helium is notoriously tough to contain. It fits through any cracks, no matter how small. They have plenty left. The thruster issue seems to be a software problem, as before. The thrusters aren't failing, just getting turned off because the computer thinks something's wrong. Hopefully, they've uploaded a patch already.
    My thoughts and prayers are with them and with you. Hope everything works out smoothly in both cases.

    I agree with Angry on this. These aren’t just two human beings, they have families and relatives who would be devastated if anything bad happened. If NASA and Boeing insist on bringing the astronauts back in Starliner and they do skip off the atmosphere and are lost, then that will be the end for Starliner. The entire program will simply be scrapped. If it malfunctions whilst unmanned, then it’s future is at least debatable. If it safely comes home without astronauts on board then Starliner and Boeing, may still have a future. Human lives are worth more than money. A substitute Crew Dragon would cost what? Perhaps $150 million, or around 1.5 times the cost of an F22 Raptor fighter jet. I’m guessing but whatever the cost, it’s better than risking two valuable people.

      @RockinRobbins13 23 дня назад

      @@williamcase426 They will not die. Starliner is perfectly safe to return to Earth with both astronauts aboard.
      What Angry Astronaut knows and won't tell you is that there are two maneuvering systems in the service module, PLUS another RCS system in the Starliner itself.
      On the service module there is the 36 small thruster system called the reaction control system, RCS. 27 of the 36 thrusters are all working perfectly and the nine that are not are housed in a single "doghouse" of the four equidistantly arrayed on the outside of the service module.
      As long as two opposite doghouses are operating correctly, and they are, the Starliner has full ability to control attitude. But what if all 36 fail? There's a backup for that too! As a matter of fact there are two backups.
      The first is the orbital maneuvering and control (OMAC) thrusters. Those are the larger thrusters you see on the back of the service module, equally spaced and inset from the outside. These are working perfectly, indeed Starliner was put into its precise orbit using these thrusters. They have no problems. Normal procedure for reentry is to retrofire these thrusters to attain the perfect angle into the atmosphere. Normally you would fire all four. But if one fails you can fire any two opposite thrusters to reenter perfectly. So the OMAC system is triply redundant. The astronauts are 100% safe.
      Before Starliner actually encounters the atmosphere, after the OMAC thrusters have established the perfect angle of reentry, the service module, containing 100% of the malfunctions encountered in this mission, is jettisoned. From then on the perfectly functioning RCS system of the Starliner capsule itself will guide to a perfect landing. If all those thrusters fail, Starliner is aerodynamically stable and will maintain its heatshield forward to land completely safe, although maybe not exactly where intended.
      The statement "astronauts are in mortal danger" is a clickbait lie. Angry Astronaut should be ashamed of himself. Falsely feeding irrational fear is not how space exploration moves forward. This guy wants to use nuclear engines, for God's sake. He's all over the place from callous disregard for safety to being afraid of delusions.

    I will say this again, to swap to the Crew Dragon, several things have to happen:
    1) SpaceX will have to make two IVA suits for Butch and Suni since their Boeing suits won’t connect to the Crew Dragon umbilical.
    2) Butch and Suni are using consumables, food, water, oxygen et al that wasn’t planned for and will have to be replaced.
    3) Starliner will have to be jettisoned prior to the Crew Dragon showing up to make room and before the helium runs out supplying the boosters
    4) Three extra days will have to be planned once the Crew Dragon shows up so it is the right orbit when undocking for descending.
    I’m going to assume that NASA has the measurements for both those astronauts so SpaceX can quickly build those suits
    Figure 25 days to prepare the suits, cargo etc plus three days and time for a proper launch configuration.
    It is a minimum of 28 days to bring those two home.
    Now that this issue has been resolved, remember that the two spacecraft are still so dissimilar that if this happens again, we would have to go back through the same exercise
    I understand NASA wanting to have two contractors but just like with Apollo 13, the L.E.M. and command module had different air scrubbers (one square the other cylindrical). These two configuration don’t play well together.
    Or did no one think about this?

      @@rogerstarkey5390 any time a launch, reentry, or docking procedure is done, astronauts need to be in a suit in the event of a pressurization failure. The reason we do that is because it happened. In the early days of the space race, 3 soviet cosmonauts were exposed to teh vacuum of space during an undocking procedure because of some kind of vehicle failure. The vehicle survived reentry perfectly fine, but the people inside did not. So now everyone is required to wear a suit that can be exposed to vacuum. And as macabre as it is, there is some evidence that the astronauts on the space shuttle that broke up on reentry were conscious until it hit the ground, thanks to their suits.
