    Ok, I know as an ultrarunner, or any runner for that matter, DNF sucks. However, most people can't even do a 50 mile race. So I applaud my ultrarunner friends who go out there and get the miles in. Dave, awesome getting 50+ miles 👊👏.

    I’ve never done an ultra and won’t but that was interesting. Also huge credit to you for sharing the dnf and real story. It doesn’t take away from the channel or interest AT ALL. I’d say it’s more interesting and more real that you share the fails. Also, don’t forget, 55 miles is a long way. I just did a half marathon and that kicked my ass. 55 miles is two marathons, so don’t be so hard on yourself. And those conditions looked awful.

    I was the guy from California talking to you at the start line. I also DNF. It was impossible for me to run in that condition being so used to training on the smooth trails in SoCal. I walked 30.5 miles to Wachusetts and decided to drop when they told me I had 1 hr 45 mins to get to the next aid station 8.5 miles away. You did great!

    Thanks for sharing! I DNF'd this race last year at mile 64 by timing out, and finally got my finish this year. I've sent this video to a few friends because you captured the awful night perfectly. The rain and terrain created such a monster. I am so chafed EVERYWHERE and my feet are destroyed. Having a crew was the only thing that got me through to my first hundred finish. Thank you again for sharing and congrats on the 50ish miles you did run.

    Thanks for sharing the video and your experience Dave. I enjoyed chatting with you during the stretch up and over Wachusett. Really enjoyed the video. - Ryan

    When I heard the ominous slasher movie sound track at the first of the video, I feared this would be a tough one. All those leaf-covered slippery rocks and marginal trails must have been so tough. Appreciate the honesty Dave, so many folks would have glossed this one over. And remember, a DNF is always better than a DNS (Did Not Start)!

    I ran the 50 mile starting at 9pm in the downpour. Awful trail conditions. Slowed me down so much just to try and stay safe but I finished eventually. Kept thinking if there would even be any 100 finishers it was so bad at points. Buddied up with a fellow runner and still got lost numerous times during the night. You the man for doing those climbs in those conditions!! Absolute savage event this year!

    What an incredible video. DNF's are hard to swallow sometimes. I've done a few 100k races and the ultimate goal was to eventually try for a 100 miler but then on my last 100 race I got to 58k and everything just left me due to severe heat exhaustion, it really knocked my confidence and I haven't raced since. I always look at 100 miles through the eyes of how I usually am at the end of 100km and wonder if I'd have what it took to put another 60km on the legs but I think that perhaps you just have to go for these things regardless. It's great that you shared this and helped me realise a DNF isn't failing you still did something admirable! Thanks for the little spark ignition I needed to start looking into what's next! Good luck on the next one

    Hi Dave, Thanks for posting this and your other DNF. As a amateur runner trying to start out in the sport, I appreciate seeing someone skilled and accomplished like yourself push through a less desirable result. So many of the videos of the hard ultra marathons emphasize the difficulty, but just about always show a successful result. When success is less common then those videos indicate it would be. A realistic recording of the approach to a success is in my opinion a more inspiring and engaging story. Keep at it! You are gonna get a finish and I will be stoked for you!

    Hey Dave! What do you do about your plantar facia? Like shit?
    My left foot is sore on the outerside-near the heel - ( i dont think that is plantar facia? Usually thats near the front pad right - mam i dont know)
    I dont know if its my shoes that are done/tired/ (VERY POSSIBLE) or shitty running form?

    • @ChaseTheSummit
      @ChaseTheSummit  9 месяцев назад

      Plantar Fasciatis is the worst. Painful enough to stop you from running but not serious enough for medical professionals to help fix it. Unfortunately the only thing that works reliably for me is rest. On top of that I use night splints that keep my feet perpendicular to my legs (keeps the tendon stretched while you sleep) and I use a golf ball style roller to roll it out in the morning before I start my day. Another factor is footwear... that can aggravate it!

      It sounds silly, but "toe yoga" fixed a vicious 6 month flare up for me. With feet flat on floor, keeping all other toes down, raise big toes 10 x. Then switch, raising only 4 other toes 10 x. Then alternate. Repeat 2-3x a day. In the beginning you might get cramps across the sole, but as it strengthens, it goes away. Best wishes!

    So much rain and mud 🫢
    Running and hiking with wet feet is the worst for me.
    Can you do this ultra with GoreTex shoes? Would it help?
    Get well soon 🤞🤞🤞

      Obviously can't answer for Dave, but I've hiked and run and walked a lot in Gore Tex shoes and rain. Up to maybe an hour I'd go for waterproof shoes in conditions like on the race, but the longer you stay out the more water will enter the shoes from above and it will be really wet inside shoes that can't drain out water.
      IMO the only option for long duration in rain and waterproof shoes is if you protect the shoes from water running down your legs. That mean at least gaiters and probably rain pants which mean it has to be really cold or you're going to overheat on a run.

    • @ChaseTheSummit
      @ChaseTheSummit  9 месяцев назад +1

      As the other commenter mentioned. If you wear “waterproof” shoes they tend to retain water and never dry out once they get wet which is fine for shorter activities or in the winter. In this environment with constant rain for a full day they’d do more harm than good.

    Did you have waterproof gear or did it not withstand the constant rain?

    • @ChaseTheSummit
      @ChaseTheSummit  9 месяцев назад +1

      Ultimately in these conditions nothing is "waterproof" I had dry bags used for kayaking in my vest to keep my extra layers in, I also have numerous zip locks to keep electronics, and other stuff dry. By the end of the race everything had soaked through even the dry bag and zip locks. My electrolyte powder turned into gel due to water getting through the packaging. It was VERY wet!
