There is a lot of information packed into this 35 mins so be ready for it! Leave a comment below with your thoughts after watching the video. You know I love to interact with all of you. -Joey.

      @@chilldutchie8166 Yes. that caused all of this. I will find out in January when I go back to eye doc. The vision loss was really slight to start with so its hard to tell if its still there or not.

      Glad you came through your surgery well. I have never even heard of that type of tumor. Amazing. I wonder how much better your going to feel going forward since your body is no longer getting huge doses of cortisol. Keep getting better and keep up the great content.

    I’ve had many surgeries in my life, but I always think that they should have a “surgery 101” class before a first surgery. And NOT with the surgeon, but with the recovery nurses. Lol!! Glad you are doing well, loved hearing your story.

    My DIL’a brother had a very similar surgery recently, but did end up with Cushings and lots of weight gain, problems, and meds. They indicated it was very very rare. My DIL is a doctor, so understands this way more than I do. I’m sending her this video. Glad you’re having such a successful recovery!

    Joey, I sympathize with you. I have been so discouraged & calling bs on every doctor who claims you can eat as much as you want on a low-fat, whole food plant-based diet. I have continually gained weight since being plant-based for the past 3 and a half years. Last month I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Disease and had to start taking thyroid meds. I lost 6 pounds the first week I was on the medication. I’m hoping my plant-based diet and my weight will finally align.

    I am an anaesthetic nurse and I work in neuro surgery twice a week. Here in Australia, where I am currently working, the anaesthetist and surgeons, in your case the neuro and ENT surgeons have a legal obligation to explain everything again to the patient on the day of the surgery. From the tube they put down your throat with the possible subsequent pain and discomfort to the possible side effects and complications. After surgery patients go to the Recovery and we go on to the next surgery. I have had major surgery before so I know what it’s like, but I have never heard it explained like you have, especially post transphenoidal surgery. I think this will help many people. Good luck with your recovery.

    • @PlantBasedDads
      @PlantBasedDads  2 года назад

      I think the expect at my age that I have been in the hospital a few times. So they explains everything they are doing about the surgery but nothing about the prep work they were going to do to me. That part was the hard part. But they did treat me like gold so I am not complaining. Thanks so much for watching.

    So glad hearing your surgery success & positive update Joey! Your connection of high cortisol and inability to lose weight was a huge AHA moment for me! I’ve tested high cortisol for years and keep being told to just lower my stress levels & take lots ashwaganda. As you dive deeper please share your findings for those of us who also suffer high cortisol & inability to lose weight (not triggered by a tumor). Best wishes on your healing journey :-)

    Joey, am catching up and am so happy to hear you are doing so well (I spend a lot of my time caring for my 90 year old mother, so my time is not my own). Your surgery is the kind of thing that's great to have in the rear vision mirror. You mentioned that a lot in the community had had similar problems, but I have to say I've had various life saving surgeries, but no brain surgery (yet). So you're a bit special.

    Everyone who goes under general anesthesia has to have a breathing tube. They usually warn you that you could have a sore throat afterwards. Why they put a catheter in is a mystery since the surgery was in your head. I’m glad you have recovered from all of that misery.

      Hi Charlene. That Delta flight was a nightmare. I know its not just Delta, its all the airlines but I wish they had handled it better. I had to get back for the surgery so thats why I was really worried about getting back to Phoenix. I am usually a calm person because I think everything through and make a plan. As far as weight, you can see if you have elevated cortisol to start with. In the end, that was the issue for me. I was not ballooning up or anything but I was not losing weight and I should have been. Thanks so much for commenting.

    Your journey was amazing. I was delighted to hear about your hospital course, from a patient perspective. My husband had a journey a few years ago while we were out of state and he got hit in the head with a car alternator that caused him to have 5 brain bleeds and a cracked skull from ear to ear. He was in ICU for 4 days and then stepped down to the stroke unit. He lost a lot of weight and refused to eat their puddings/applesauce/ice cream stuff. His stay was only 7 days in total and I had to drive him back home cause he couldn’t fly (we went from Minnesota to Arizona). Once we got home, he recovered SO fast and went back to work as a high level C suite executive without any residual effects, all within 60 days! His doctors were amazed. They thought he would be disabled from the head injury for the rest of his life and have an altered personality- but he didn’t. We credit his whole food plant based lifestyle !! Just like yours!

    I’m so glad to see you in such high spirits and on the road to recovery. As a neuro ICU nurse I laughed and cried throughout this video. I’m that nurse yelling at patients to wake up after they’ve had a seizure, meanwhile keeping other patients like you awake. Thank you for all your kind words about the nursing profession. Thank you also for highlighting male nurses…they don’t get enough credit. Some of the best nurses I work with are men! Hospitals and physician education on nutrition have a LONG way to go! I’m excited to follow along with your journey!

    Hi Joey. Sorry for what you went through, it doesn’t sound fun. But you did make me laugh. Multiple times. Out loud. And that is why people are drawn to you. You’re a real genuine guy who cares. And we care right back. Wish you lived closer. I’m a teacher also and think we have a lot in common. :). Best wishes for your sustained health. 🥰

    I’m watching this a year later. I’m glad it went well for you! It sounded intense though. Around the same time I had bc. I was pissed off too! Been a veg head for like 20 yrs. PBV for 11. Lifting weights, running, walking, cut down on sugar. But I had cancer, we all thought it was a mistake. I was always told I was healthy, bloodwork was always great. Never had problems even close to this.
    I mean what you had thank goodness it wasn’t more and it was very different of course. Outcome was positive, plus it’s good to have some questions answered about your health. What you went through seemed so intense and painful. But you seem to heal up quick!
    Like you I was always (seemly) healthy! Yet I had cancer!? My surgery was so painful, I cried so much for a few weeks. I had breakthrough pains, so I took those darn pain meds. I thought I would never get better and I would be in pain for the rest of my life. I began walking the next day though, barely down my block. Eventually I was walking in the park at first with my pillow. I was lucky too, to have a spouse in the medical field (he’s an RN, my sweet nurse).
    Thank goodness I had options. Now I have to say (knock on wood) what I had was very much treatable. I didn’t need radiation or chemo, it was small and early (even though they think I had this for 5 yrs). I do think my diet did help keep this thing in check! I prob could have gone with a lesser invasive surgery, but I didn’t want to risk going through this again, since my body was doing this. I been back to norma, fitness, lifting weights, running, walking. Eventually I want to lift heavier weights! Someday! 🏋🏼‍♂️
    I have to admit too I eat healthy wfpb, but not as healthy as you do on your channel. But I will try your recipes and eat way cleaner. I am cutting down on tofu though ☹️ do to the kind of cancer I had (even though my meat eater doc called bs on that “one study”, he said I can eat tofu). Best 🌱
    -Sorry so long!

      I wanted to share the entire experience. Thats the stuff that nobody talks about. If someone is watching this and going for this surgery, now they know what to expect. I had hundreds of people tell me they went through this, and not one of them told me that I would wake up with a catheter. I wish I had know that ahead of time so I could have been mentally prepared instead of shocked. Right?

    they put the tube down your throat bc they have to. If they don't and your lungs collapse they would get sued to oblivion. But they should have told you about all this stuff. A lot of people seriously underestimate the fallout from any surgery. Whenever they cut into your body, things are painful and take quite a while to come back to normal. I am really glad to see that you are up and getting back to regular things like doing you tube videos etc. I am sooo glad you have sorted the weight loss puzzle. It can be super frustrating. Bravo!!

However, your personable story-telling capabilities hooked me in. So glad I listened to the entire video because I was excited to hear about your lower cortisol levels Cortisol is a stress hormone. Congratulations to your recovery. I went through brain surgery 8 months ago. Had a craniopharyngioma on the hypophysis which also affected my eyesight. I learned that the hypophysis regulates a lot of glands a.o. the cortisol level. May be your tumour also was connected to the hypophysis? Wish you good look with your recovery. It will be OK.

    so I also had a pituitary macroadenoma. your story, so far, sounds so familiar. my surgery was a bit different. my tumour had more involvement with the carotid arteries, rather than the optic nerve, like in your case. and it was causing a fun disease called agromegaly. my surgery was a slit under the nose, under the top lip, to pull back the skin on the face to expose the nose. she preferred the direct method, not with a camera cuz it was so close to the arteries. so, basically disassembled the nose to expose the sinus, remove some sinus bones to get to the pituitary. I was in ICU for 48 hours, in the hospital for 5 days. And healed with no problems. except the surgery didnt work and there was enough tumour left to put me into acromegaly. fun times!!!
    catheters are normal when dealing with stuff like this. working on your pituitary can cause a bunch of nasty diseases like diabetes insipidus. they need to monitor all your ins and outs for a few day. the trach tube is also customary for procedures like this, you're put out so much they have to control your breathing. And, i've not finished watching yet, but you probably also had an ART line, a line directly into an artery, probably your wrist, for a day or two. when they mess near your brain, they really are extra careful and want to monitor everything, but you want them to be. and I'm looking forward to when you have to expel the long nose clot, now that's fun!
    the type of reaction your body has to the tumour is very specific to where on the pituitary the tumour sits. mine was located in the area of the pit. which produced human growth hormone, yours in the area that controlled cortisol. glad you recovered so quickly and didnt develop cushings. When I started this road, cushings was mentioned to me as a possibility. not sure if it would have been better than the acromegaly lol.

    Glad you are doing so well now. As a health care professional it’s a reminder to all of us to maybe more specific about what to expect in hospital when we take so many basic routine things for granted that we don’t always think to prepare you for.

    • @PlantBasedDads
      @PlantBasedDads  2 года назад

      The did have someone tell me everything to expect. They told me all about the recovery and the process and the nose bleeding. I think they just assume everyone has been in a hospital before so that we all know already about tubes and catheters. I have never been in a hospital before so I had no idea about that stuff. So I think maybe they just need to work on that part. Otherwise, since they told me about the nose bleeds and sinus pressure, that never scared me.

Today I made something for lunch inspired by one of your episodes. It was super simple. I was craving Mac N Cheese and boiled the noodles and almost done with cooking then I added 3 bags of frozen veggies that were only half full and either I was gonna use them or toss them. Then I strained the noodles and veggies and added the vegan cheese sauce. I my lunch watching your testimony and hospitalization is the same with us all, lots of pestering for the patient making us get well soon! You did it!! You are healed!!

    You have to repeat to every single member of the hospital staff all the same information over and over and over. They never have a steady line of communication between shifts and teams. And the pain meds I swear don't relieve pain; they just make it so you can't EXPRESS the pain you're in. So glad you made it through your surgery successfully and you're home and healthy. It must be such a relief to have an answer as to why you've been struggling!

    About 15 years ago I had a couple adenoma's on my pituitary glands - they were small and eventually went away after about 3-4 years (MRIs every 6 months to monitor. After listening to your video, I am now wondering if they are back. I can't not regulate or maintain weight loss on a WFPB now for 4 years. (I do have thyroid issues as well, but those numbers are pretty stable). Your video was enlightening. Sorry that you had to go through that, but happy to hear your recover went well.
