In 1983, Curtis Hudson and Lisa Stevens of the group Pure Energy had written the song "Holiday", which Madonna recorded and released as the third single from her self-titled debut album. After the single's commercial success, Hudson wrote a song sounding like "Holiday", in case Warner, Madonna's record company, wanted to release a similar song to it. He named it "Spotlight" and offered it to Madonna, who recorded the song for her 1986 album True Blue. However, Madonna didn't include it in the album because she felt that it was similar in composition and structure to "Holiday".
When Madonna decided to create 'You Can Dance', she and Stephen Bray reworked the demo composed by Hudson and Madonna asked Shep Pettibone to remix it and included it on the album. John "Jellybean" Benitez, who had recorded the original demo during the True Blue sessions, assisted Pettibone in remixing the song.
"Spotlight" was featured in Japanese TV commercials that Madonna filmed for electronics company Mitsubishi. The commercial promoted their VCR model F-5.3.
The song was also used as cross-promotion for the Japanese leg of her 1987 Who's That Girl World Tour under the campaign name of "Dreams Come True".
The song was released commercially in Japan on April 25, 1988. "Spotlight" peaked at number 68 on the Oricon weekly singles chart, remaining on the chart for five weeks. It also charted on the Oricon international singles chart, reaching a peak of three on May 19, 1988, staying on the chart for ten weeks.

It has been proven some Madonna tracks enhance your mood as they're so lively, happy , optimistic ! She literally saved me as a teenager , as I was living in a very depressing environment. I used to listen to her records on loop. She was my escape & antidepressant.

It might have been becoming a big hit. However, when you hear it, it might feel very similar to the Holiday-Single released much earlier around 1983. - Once I even thought it was the B-side of Holiday, but isn´t.
This is definitely one of Madonna's best songs and another clear example of why the 1980s was the decade when music was real music.

That is it for a lot of people...1983 to 1989...maybe 1990, but that is it. I think she re-invented herself so many times, she lost the genuine Madonna that ladies wanted to be just like and that guys wanted to marry.

I did not mean it was like a light switch that got turned off at 1990. I was referring to her prime and the drop off in music quality. Yes, you can cherry pick a song here and there, but that's about all...especially for a lot of people that were into to her early on. Some of her songs in later years, she just could have practically phoned into the studio. If people in her inner circle had suggested to put some of that stuff on her first 3 albums, the idea would not only have been rejected, but Madonna probably would have fired their ass.
Think of it like the Rolling Stones where it is widely recognized that their last great album was in 1981 (Tattoo You)...ever since then they crank out a bunch of very forgettable songs and occasionally there might be a better one in there. They can keep doing that until there in their 90's...nice they are making music, but their productive careers are over.
What a treat! I had never seen this video before. Actually, I thought this was released as a single in the U.S. It seems I remember listening to it on the car radio. She was my queen from 1983 to 2001. Eighteen years is a damn good run in the world of pop music. Thank you, Madonna!

The song was released on the ‘you can dance’ remix album as a new song. Album was releasted midst the ‘who’s that girl tour’ in 1987 (I think). I think it was snowed with the release of The Who’s that girl movie and the soundtrack which also contained new singles, ‘who’s that girl’, ‘causing a commotion’ and ‘the look of love’. Last two also got snowed in imo..

This is one of my favorite Madonna songs and it should have been on True Blue, it would have been a huge hit. It is somewhat similar to Holiday but I still think it would have done really well for her if she had released it as a single.

Beautiful Stranger famously didn't break the top 10 because Warner Bros delayed the physical single release intentionally to increase sales of the Austin Powers soundtrack album. The result was that by the time the commercial single was released, allowing it to chart, the radio stations were already starting to play it less. As a result, the song barely broke the top 20. The theory goes that had the record company not played that stunt, Beautiful Stranger would have easily been a top 10 hit, possibly top 5.

I remember in 1987 hearing Spotlight on the radio on an Australian Music Program called The Top 8 at 8 on EON FM and I melted. Because I loved the first two albums so much and Into The Groove And Gambler. Spotlight and Causing A Commotion in 1987 was a harp back to the Early Madonna sound of the Dance Floor and I soon quickly rushed out to my local record store and bought the You Can Dance album. It's such an amazing track, Spotlight should have been a worldwide single to promote You Can Dance with a video.
