Thank you for small parcel video, I have a 10 acre parcel in SC with neighbors that just grow timber trees and never there and I get lots of deer including couple nice 8 points this year, more day than night deer activity, so small parcels can still have great success when you have best food sources around

Good video. Best advice I could give is, any time you look into managing a small parcel, spend a season or two looking at what the deer are doing and why before deciding how to manage your property. You can't keep deer on your property so you need to make your property work with surrounding property. We have 10 acres with a house on it, mature hardwood and marsh on one side, then across the road is ag. We clearcut EVERYTHING(all mature white pine) and put a small kill plot in, then planting thick cover with travel lanes so that our property is a convenient travel path between the ag and the woods/marsh that bucks feel comfortable staging in.

Lots of good info here. I am on my own 40 acres here in Western New York. Had this property for 35 yrs now. I just sat with Muzzel loader this afternoon in 14 degree weather. Saw nothing but feel good for trying. I passed on a bunch of little Bucks this yr. Still looking for a shooter. I may buy some Switchgrass seed next year. We had another bad year this year with Gipsy Moths stripping all the Apple and Oak trees. Not much food at higher elevation where I am.

I just bought 20 acres at the end of September 6 miles south of Battle Creek, Michigan and shot my biggest buck so far the Friday after opening day gun season using you tips of staying unseen traveling to my stand. I have a couple 1 acre fields I didn’t get a chance to do anything with it this year. Maybe if you come stay in Battle Creek again I can buy you some dinner and pick your brain about what type of food plot to put In to keep deer around in the winter. Can’t wait to watch this I have a BIG access issue I think and I think the past hunting practices used by everyone in the area who hunted this parcel without worrying about access plus the lay of the land. I think there has been a well developed and ingrained mindset of the deer and there are “sentry deer” who when hunters access the first day of the season they instantly clear the whole area that I’ve identified as a bedding area. This are is about 5-8 acres, which may be oversized I don’t know. But I’m examining the topo’s hard and putting in some leg work once I get my knee repaired from this season. I need to find their exit points and entry points to the “bedding area” I found one “sentry bed”.
The one big buck followed me in first day and found me and blew and blew and blew and blew and blew! Hunted the area was dead for months after that.
Gotta avoid that guy this coming season. As he is still showing up on my cameras. I gotta figured out to access his travel route undetected

I think I’ll be moving my food plot next year. I have a rectangle 13 acre lot that borders public land on two sides. I walk through the property to get to my food plot. The property is surrounded by cedar swamp, the deer are bedding on the public land and traveling through the swamp to my property.
I’ll likely create a new plot closer to the top of the property and turn the old plot into bedding.

It's in-between a bedding area and a couple of ag fields. And there are 4 lane highways for deer trails. I have 8 acres in the middle of farm land. 4 of those acres I'm converting to a small hunting parcel. This past season I had at least 9 doe and 6 bucks ranging from spike to a 9pt bedding down during the night. By hunting season there is isn't a fall food source and my land lacks the cover to hold them. I harvested a few thousand box alder maple seeds to plant this spring as well as ordering switch grass and red osier dogwood to start building cover. This small parcel is for my kids to hunt for youth and rifle season. I expect a minimum 3 years before I start seeing results.

I 100% agree, however I really hate the fact that some hunters are easily making the statement of waiting for the correct wind, or other important factors that are definitely important. This said I am just thinking that this would really come down to several factors that being a family, location where you are hunting for example I'm married and we have 2 kids 1 in high-school and 1 in 4th grade and I am living in Oconomowoc however I really enjoy hunting in the Driftless area 3hrs away. I have usually 2 days to go hunting and I will be home doing the family things. Do you have private property or hunting public property, what is the majority of the food sources? I have absolutely been a very positive person who actually has been very angry with the way some people have been constantly out of the woods and they then will wait for the perfect wind. I'd love to if I was to finally get my own property but I'm just at the age and point that I have to take the weather that is provided.

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751man I just really LOVE the videos and knowledge that you pass along. I pray that God will someday make my dreams come true and I will be able to get a great piece of land and I am just trying not to be negative however I am a disabled veteran who was injured in Afghanistan and deemed unemployable due to my injuries and my dreams are daily getting farther from my grasp due to the fact that I am not able to even imagine that I would be approved for a loan because of my income. I'm proud to have served the nation but I really hate the way I am not able to gain employment due to the severe combat and my injuries in Afghanistan. I am very blessed because I have a great wife and 2 God loving and caring children that are always telling me that they are definitely don't care about the things that I never can provide for them and I just really LOVE that but it is always heart wrenching and I am beating myself up because of the fact that they honestly could have a great life with another man that is actually able to provide the best life and possessions. They have always hated the times when I told them to leave because I have often had my combat experiences and severe ptsd and survival guilt and nightmares and I don't make the money they deserve. I have really realized that they have all seen that I am an amazing father and husband. I have really enjoyed being in nature and the fact that nature has been very impactful in my life and recovery and I have always loved the thought of if I was somehow blessed to be able to get around 40,80,100 acers of land in the Driftless, I have been constantly thinking about how I really would love to invite fellow combat veterans and my church friends who had never hunted or even trout fished to come over to stay the weekend and I will let them do whatever they want hike, fish, hunt , shoot and anything else to enjoy the moment and I am positive that it has helped me and how I can try to help others

Seriously I have really enjoyed the show, I however have been constantly bow hunting in the Driftless area and outside Viola WI. I'm curious about what you are honestly looking for when you are actually hunting on a public property and you can see that you have absolutely movement in the woods however you don't have any idea of what they are actually eating. I understand that most of the time deer are grazing forage in the woods as they are moving through. Anything you can share that I can do or try to keep the deer in the area longer? I am curious because I have been given permission to hunt a small 13 acer piece with the top of the property is 6 acers and the hillside is extremely steep and the owners are not interested in hunting it because they are not able to drive their side by sides up to the top. I have been up on top 2 years ago and it was severely ripped up, last year I completely left it alone and I am just planning to sit it once or up to 3 x. The fact that they have 7 to 10 giant white or red oaks. The oaks are right in the middle of the top and the movement goes to the thick cedar rocky point that the deer doesn't have to jump from the rocks and they are clearly able to move up and down easily however it's a very steep climb for me..

Hi Jeff, I have a question on the depth of cover. You always talk about having depth of cover but you don't really say how much is considered enough. I have 40 acres with some small food plots, total around half an acre, on the south border just in from the road and another one that is about one acre in maybe 75-100 yards from the road on the southwest side of the property. The whole west side and north end and most of the east side are all sanctuary and is low land that is really thick. There is a few does and a couple of young bucks using it now and coming out to the food plots at all times of the day. There wasn't a mature buck here this year, last year i had one that hung around from late Oct. to mid Feb.

How am I supposed to add enticing bedding cover on my land when my neighbor has a 10 year old 40 acre clear cut that never gets touched? Left all the white oak in it as well. I’m in a big woods setting so wouldn’t it make sense to let the deer bed there and just bring them to my land with high quality food?

    • @JayN4GO
      @JayN4GO Год назад

I would build a late season spot here. Those acorns don’t last all year. In December, if you have plots further in on your parcel, access with good wind. You might also consider TSI or laying over some trash trees on your side to create bedding. Mature bucks like to bed next to food “within 100 yards” If not pressured. Beans and corn would be great on your side

So small parcel means large acreage for the average person.
Some people have absolutely no idea how good they have it.

Poor access & no sanctuaries/bedding thickets are the biggest fixes most folks could make.

100 acres is a small parcel? People out here clicking on this are thinking you mean 10-20 acres... If 100 acres is a small parcel, I'll just pass on having the silver spoon up my ass like the people who can afford 100 acres already do... I've hunted since I was 7. Seeing all these people from out of state, and new to the sport hunter, angers me.

I kill more mature big ass bucks along fence rows and open fields than you can in the woods. Big Bucks will bed down along fence rows and open fields and hold does down out in the open. I keep fence rows along our farm just for deers.
