I got a Level 8 Road Runner in Aug 2021 and have used it on over 100 flights. I love it, and my wife bought one a year ago. We have no regrets! And would not consider any others. What you need matters most but if this looks good, I think you’ll love it too.
I work for TSA Baggage and Checkpoint, I will say that most damaged bags are hard shell. TSA does not damage the bags as we dont throw them. As far as what the ground workers that throw bags onto the aircrafts do, no comment lol. Also, the amount you pay doesnt reflect anything. Those LOUIS VUITTON and GUCCI bags get damaged the same. You have to think that it's all plastic... $5 plastic or $5,000 plastic makes no difference. TSA locks are great, but, as a traveller, I never felt the need to lock my bags as they are always with me or the airlines. Most stolen items are the entire bag themselves locked or not. If someone wants access to your bag, it's going to get opened once they steal the entire bag. Heres what I say is better: 1) Soft Shell because the zipper is usually in the front and you dont have to worry about two sides at the same time when the hardshells are split in half. 2) No Gimicky features like a pull out closet or things that add more weight. (For the love of humanity, don't get those electronic suit cases that drive around) 3) TSA locks are great when we need to look inside, and you do not want your bags damaged. Again, no real need to lock your bags unless you're staying at a hotel and want to keep everything inside your bag. Again 2x they will steal the entire thing as opposed to grabbing a few items. 4) Rotating wheels!!! Why the f* do they still make bags with stationary wheels? You can pull and push your rotating wheels the same plus more. 5) The less pockets, the easier it is to find and pack everything. 6) LIGHTWEIGHT. MINIMAL IS KEY. I know they try to market all of these extra features with neat pockets and extra tech like USB ports. Don't be that douche bag. BUT BUT BUT BUT... I will say, that MONOS bag you recommend is really cool. The anti-shake design of the handle is already the best feature for me personally. That blows the other ones out of the water with that feature alone.
blame the tech youtubers who love the crap out of bags that have use ports. they love charging the ever loving crap out of there gear. you know, laptop, phone, tablet, camera, and etc.
I agree with all but #4. I posted a comment above before reading you post so will repeat it here: I don't understand this obsession with spinner wheels. Those count toward the dimensions for overhead bin use and take away a LOT of storage space inside the bag. I'd rather have a 2 wheeled bag that goes all the way to the ground giving 2 or 3 more inches of storage capacity. If someone is so lazy they can't pull a two-wheeled bag but have to push (harder by the way) a 4-wheeled spinner bag, then perhaps you're carrying too much.
I have travelled the world and gone through tons of luggage. I have been using the Monos carryon almost exclusively (when not using my Cotopaxi backpack) this past year and it is the best roller bag I've ever had. It has been through the wringer and handles cobblestone streets like a champ. Not only is it the lightest but it holds a ridiculous amount of clothes etc.
My wife and I just got back three days ago after a 25-day trip around the UK and Ireland with 2 Level8 textured carry-ons we purchased right before the trip. We chose carry-on sized bags not so much for the airplane, but for the ability to fit into the luggage compartments of compact car rentals, which we felt more comfortable driving on the tiny roads and negotiating the narrow ramps and tiny parking garage spaces in Europe. After being in the baggage compartments on five flights, lugged around in three rental cars, and checked in and out of 15 hotels, we've got nothing but love for these bags. With available discounts, we got two bags for just a little more than the price of one of the other of your top picks, so definitely agree they have the most bang for the buck. We also got two sets of the Level8 organizers, which after looking around at other choices, we ended up purchasing because they are sized exactly right to fit into the Level8 suitcase. Again, price of one bag plus the organizer set came out cheaper than the price of one of the other bags. To me, having that organizer set is comparable to the 'bells and whistles' features of the other finalists. I'll finish by saying that some of the tips in your other videos were extremely helpful and contributed greatly to the success of our trip. Thanks!!!
When I was looking for a new carry on bag, I went back and forth between Monos and July, and ultimately it came down to the weight factor. July was the lightest which is important to me as a solo female traveler. I traveled through 4 countries in Europe with it and it did very well. Overall it is a great bag. Thanks for the review!
so did you have any issues with zippers, shipping costs, warranty or the trolley pass through not fitting? I'm really considering this because of it's durable exterior
Unfortunately July under quote their bag weights, I bought their checked luggage and it's 850g heavier than claimed. They tried to say that 2 of the included features are optional but one is non removable without a lot of work and also even after removed still 500g over quoted weight.
@@plramirez2449 I have had no issues with the carry-on size that I purchased. The wheels held up great on cobblestones and other rough surfaces , and the zippers slide very smooth.
Those "expansion" zippers are actually "compression" zippers. You're supposed to pack with the zipper open, then after you close your bag, you compress your bag by zipping the compression zipper back up. Cheers.
I can confirm that the bigger carryon Away, I used the expansion zipper for a compression "feature" even though they didn't advertise it... Worked great!
Using the zippers as a compression technique is just a hack.. it's intended use is clearly stated by the manufacturers as an expensive feature for when limitations on weight or size won't be enforced.. e.g road trips. A zip will always be a zip and straining it that much continuously over time will wear it out.
I bought the Monos Plus a couple years ago after doing a ton of research. I absolutely love it. My husband loved mine so much that I bought him one. We've taken the Plus international and had no issues. It's such a smooth suitcase, there's no issue moving it around. I always recommend it to friends who are looking for new suitcases.
When you say you've taken it Internationally, by any chance do you recall the airlines? Not Ryan or TAP, I assume? Do you just mean, like Virgin and British Airways, bigger more comfortable lines?
Great vid! Would like to add - the extendable zipper works for the winter trips, which can mean bulkier clothes. It allows you to extend the bag, seamlessly close it, and THEN close the extender without struggle. And this is coming from someone who is deathly allergic to overpacking.
The Samsonite Freeform Carry-on is a worthy contender to add to this list. I own a monos carry on which I love and my wife has the samsonite. I don’t find them significantly different to justify the additional premium for the monos. You can get the Samsonite for $150 and it is just as sturdy and well built. Also, with Samsonite’s network of physical stores, getting the bag repaired would be much easier. My friends with Monos and Away bags had warranty claims that took months to get resolved and in Away’s case, they sent the part which my friend then had to take to a local store to get installed and had to pay for the installation. It is interesting that most carry-on comparisons on the internet are not even considering legacy brands like Samsonite and I myself didn’t consider it when I was getting my carry on but after using my wife’s carryon on a few trips, I would recommend Samsonite just as much as I would recommend the Monos.
Very good points. I’ve read excellent reviews of the Samsonite Freeform in various publications and it has consistently drawn praise and high marks. It’s curious how it hasn’t achieved the same recognition on the various YT channels specific to travel and baggage.
I only buy Samsonite and as an intercontinental traveler with decades of travel. Samsonite is without question the best in terms of life (guarantees only matter if the bag fails). And I thought they were expensive until I saw the prices here - it’s economy yet the best. Maybe it’s because they are European produced???
Samsonite is not chic enough - it's your parents bag- that's probably why- I've flown weekly for work and I have a Samsonite soft case- nothing wrong with it
@@jerrycote659because it doesn’t meet the size requirements of all International airlines like Air Canada and the European airlines. I had to return mine. Not even American Airlines and some domestic, it’s 23 inches in height, most airlines have a 22.5 inch limit
I have been watching so many of these bigger selection comparison videos, and I appreciate them all. Your video, however, has to be the best amongst them. You are pointing out some concerns that I haven't considered before, and that other videos missed, such as the width of the luggage handle affecting trolley pass-through. I think I'm sold on the Monos, with the Level 8 being a close contender due to its interior set-up. Thank you for all your work!
Excellent video and I had already purchased my Level 8 Luminous Textured Carry On in Navy and I’m really impressed with this bag for the price point. I am currently in Florence Italy, having arrived after 3 days in London and this bag has rolled through both cities, particularly the uneven stone streets in Florence like a dream. I was able to pack for 10 days and followed a previous video you had with tips on how to select items which can be used in multiple combinations and it really helped me focus on my choices and it totally worked. Your beat tip though was when you said if considering an item to ask yourself if it’s something you wear regularly and often when not traveling, and if it isn’t, then why even consider it because it’s going to be the same wherever you are traveling to, so, don’t even consider it. Sounds sensible, but, hearing it makes you recognize the obviousness. I enjoy your channel and appreciated the video you had about Florence with your wife. Great tips I’ve used in planning and now using while I’m actually here, staying right next to Santa Maria Novella Church and Piazza. Gorgeous city.
I have an Away Luggage, this exact suitcase that was tested to be exact. One of the perks of the Away is it has a built in (removable) charger for your gadgets, cell phones, etc. I haven’t tried the Monos and don’t know if it has this feature, but it’s a nice perk if you ask me. The luggage suits me fine and has gone on as much as 21 day international trips, no probs. I’m with Away!
Nice review. I bought a Delsey about 6 years ago. I love the front extra compartment. With nothing packed there, it takes up no space. But as I’m traveling if I have purchased items to take home, they go in that pocket and it helps me stay organized.
In case anyone is looking into the BÉIS - I have a BÉIS carry on and I have not had any issues on multiple domestic and international trips. The quality is fantastic and I love this bag.
I was so glad to see July included! Most reviews are limited to just Away and Monos with the occasional mention of Level8. I have the July carry-on light, also in Moss, which I have traveled with for the last 2 years. At just 1.8 kg or 3.9 lbs, it might be the lightest thing out there, but it does only hold 32 liters. I don't mind that it is small because it's impossible to overpack when you only have 32 liters. I have had no complaints about the handle, which is only 6" wide in this model, but with the case being so small and light, the little bit of wiggle is probably less noticeable than in the regular carry on size. If I were to use a larger carry on, I have a 13 year old Samsonite that weighs 6.8 pounds and has traveled the world and still looks pretty new, so I probably wouldn't invest in a newer carry on, as much as I love all the new colors. Thanks for the great video. I love your honesty and your videos are always so fun.
EXCELLENT Review - I am just so impressed with your clear guidance and sense of humor Nik!! I have been researching this same topic for the last 2 months. I did end up choosing Monos and it is a gorgeous (and high quality) bag. I also got the clear luggage cover. Thanks for all your value!
I've been traveling with my Calpak Tustin carry on for years! For 8 years! Never had an issue with it and I also use it to seat on it while I'm waiting in line at the airport XD LOVE IT!!!!
I agree with the Monos being put on the top of the list. Not only because I own one, but have taken my Plus carry-on with me to Chicago and LA these last 4 months. Both times unfortunately I was forced to check it in because the had "ran out" of head space compartment. Both times the Monos came out like a Champ, bruised and battered with scratches, but firm and sturdy when I pick it up at baggage claim. Took a magic eraser to the scratches and was good as new.
My away bag has been on over 300 flights the last 5 years and at least 75 of those has been checked. A magic eraser and a little water and it looks brand new. No scratches. The paint on the zippers has rubbed off and the wheels look a little faded. But that’s it.
Ok. So I bought the Monos carryon based on this video recommendation, and I traveled for four weeks through Switzerland (by rail) and northern Italy and France. The bag worked well, very light with great wheels. I had to check the bag to Zurich from US and from Geneva to US because of trekking poles (banned on carry on). The bag got destroyed between Newark and Chicago on return trip. Not Monos’ fault - but nonetheless, if I hadn’t also purchased the Monos bag cover (which fits awesomely) my stuff would have been scattered everywhere. So if you’re sure you’ll never check it - get the Monos bag WITH the cover; otherwise go with an aluminum or soft shell bag.
Thank you for the review and recommendations! IMHO, the ultimate test for wheeled bags is to take them up/down steep hills and cobblestone streets. That's when you will know whether your bag can handle different pavements. I also wish these bags would come with "brakes" to lock the wheels in place when on a steep hill.
I am absolutely delighted to have found your channel. You both do a fantastic job! Your content is exceptional. Your presentation is extremely professional. Your articulation of the points you make is concise, informative and interesting. We are getting ready to take our first trip to Europe this fall, and your videos have been among the most helpful we have found. I just wanted to thank you for your advice and insight and encourage you to keep up the great work. I will recommend your channel to anyone needing some travel direction and advice. Look forward to watching more of your additions soon. Thanks again!
Marc, I can't tell you how much this means to us. We are here to help. I am so EXCITED for your first trip. Please let me know how it goes. Thanks for watching and happy travels!
My husband and I just returned from a 3 1/2 week trip through Switzerland, traveling by planes, trains, and buses. We used the July carry ons and a personal item bag each. Rolled the bags over cobblestone streets, asphalt streets, up escalators, over carpeted floors, and rough tile floors. We packed and unpacked for stays in 3 cities. The bags performed flawlessly and were so easy and comfortable to use. I would highly recommend them!
@@Elainevanderhoop are you able to bring it on international flights?? I want to buy it as well but thinking I may need the small carry on as I fly to Europe
No lie, I JUST hit the purchase button on the Level 8 Textured Carry On after some thorough research on my own (including crushing disappointment that Solgaard lost their minds and upped their bags by $100) and got the email notification for this video - feeling very solid about my purchase now!
i read monos has a lot of bad customer service when it comes to warranty but I still bought one and then experienced that customer service myself. One of the wheels kept sticking and would rotate my luggage as I rolled it, i reached out with videos and proof and they said it was: 1. surface I was rolling on (i used at airports, concrete and my own house) was the issue and didn't care how i tested it It doesnt make sense it would happen on all surfaces if that was the case. 2. the items i put in my bag caused weight shifting to one wheel which caused it to turn (last I checked, there are no suspensions in the wheels). 3. how i packed it decided how the wheels turned (also point 2). safe to say i was super disappointed, but i can't deny their hybrid luggage is still the best on the market imo. They only offered to help when I said I would dispute them with the proof I had. great video though!!!
Thank you. I have the Away and she’s been very satisfactory. Used her for about two years, no issues with the zipper, wheels or handles. I’m open to trying the monos but really want to keep this for a long time. Again, thank you
I have both Away and Monos carry-on, you nailed it! The away zippers annoyed me so much, and when i packed too heavy, it becomes a work out in my forearm to pull. Love this vidoe, thank you for sharing!
I've been using a Monos Hybrid Carry-On for the past year or so and absolutely love it. I've taken it to four different Countries and 10 different states and it holds (when properly packed) almost 2 weeks worth of clothing. Cannot recommend the company enough, they also have great customer service.
It's pretty dang secure and haven't had any accidents yet with it opening. That's including a tumble down the stairs while unlocked. The latches are pretty well built.
Travelled for a month in May and was on 10 different flights in different countries. Local and international. The Monos Luggage is a trooper. They have lifetime warranty too.
The nice thing with the bags with the expansion --- you can use that as compression! Pack your bag with it opened up -- then zip shut to compress the contents. Thanks for the terrific videos and information you provide.
I watched a lot of videos on luggage, but without a high end budget and only 3 or so flying trips a year, I went with Luggex. It seems to compare well with a few on this video. Thanks for doing these comparisons!
Bought my monos with the laptop sleeve last year, have taken it on que flights and no quality complaints at all. Best carry on ive ever had, although i do wish it had the same wheels as my rimowa check ins
I really appreciated the pace of this video as well as the solid review of each bag and reasoning behind it. Most ppl whom review products tend to lag but when I needed the information, I got it right away - so thank you
I bought the Away Carry-on a few years ago when it seems every influencer was promoting it. It's been a good bag and I'm glad it at least made your top 3. If I ever need to replace it I would definitely consider Monos.
Well done. The organization is fantastic, detailed excellent, and concise, you didn't drag this out like so many of your competitors. You clearly spent a great deal of time on the script as well. Again, Well done.
I have had nothing but good experiences with Monos bags; I had an issue where TSA has broken the "TSA accessible lock" and Monos helped send over a replacement locking mechanism, which I was able to receive and install on my own. Monos is communicative and stands behind their products. I have certainly had family notice my bags roll, stow, store, and remain undamaged far easier than cheaper or lesser bags. Just my two cents as a happy user; I have tried the Carry-on, Carry-on Pro Plus, and both Checked bag sizes.
I have the monos and the July bag and I choose the July everytime hands down. That wider handle means my personal item doesn’t spin under the bag. The compression straps seem to hold up better. The July is also way easier to close if you are taking it to capacity. I will say the July does scratch more easily though. The most important part to me is that July customer service is ultimately the easier of the two to deal with and they had a replacement to me in less than a week when I had a problem with the luggage. I had to unfortunately test out that lifetime warranty and it came through in a pinch when monos tried to fight me when they sent me packing cubes with a messed up zipper.
@@jrgulmatico I’ve obviously had a different experience with customer service, but the bag itself has held up fine and I’ve been using it for 2 years now. It scratches more easily than other luggage, but that doesn’t actually affect function.
I love my minis carry on. My husband and I can both pack into their smallest carry on size for a week and still extra space. I don’t struggle to put in the overhead alone. Was worth every penny
As a fellow emerging travel creator, this is an amazing video! The fact that you spent all of your own money to make this video shows how much you love your people!! Goals! And I use the Level 8 and looove and feel the same about the wheels
Awesome video! I did months of research as well for a 10 day Europe trip October 2022. I was in between beis, away, monos and July. Ultimately narrowed it down to July and monos and went with monos since it was $50-70 less. I adore my monos carry on! I’ve used it several times since then and it’s perfect
Thank you. I appreciate your high attention to detail and functionality that impacts travel experience and longevity. And, not least, your purchasing these bags with your own money so that company deals didn’t bias your review.
Great Channel and very informative; really enjoy your content. Working in the luggage industry for over 30 years, there are a lot of details that you misjudged or just don't realize. The main zipper "channel" protects the zipper from abrasion, whereas a zipper that protrudes further than the edge will wear much quicker. Spinner wheels are the devil in most European cities due to cobblestones and uneven terrain. Whereas a two wheel carry on provides more packing capacity(carry ons are measured from bottom of wheel to top of handle) due to recessed wheels and can handle uneven terrain much better. The lighter the bags usually indicate thinner outside material(PC, ABS, polypro..)...great presentation of product.
My wife uses a hard shell and I use a soft shell. I find the soft packs considerably more than a hard shell of the same size. And you can generally squeeze an overstuffed bag into one of the airline frames and the overhead bins.
@@goostador My soft shell still has wheels. It’s 30 years old and only has 2 wheels but has all of the packing features. I only recently started using only a carry on and was easily able to pack for 2 weeks without needing to do a laundry.
Terrific video! So just like you, I have recently done extensive research on carry on bags lately- minus the actually trying them all out in person part. :D I am glad that you confirmed that my final purchase, just a few weeks ago, was the right choice- the Monos carry on! I am really liking this bag. There are tons of bags out there and your video really helps to get down to the details of choosing one over another. Beis would've been more of a contender, if the sizing was actually carry on size; it would be terrible to be charged as a check on suddenly if I get to the airport and they enforce their sizing restrictions. Anyway, I have not been able to travel with it yet, but the Monos is a solid build. The quality, feel, and details put it in a great tier. Gotta love those compression straps. Keep up the good work!
I’m going to Greece in October and bought the Level 8 20” several months ago because the 22” was to heavy empty for my 67 y/o arms to lift over my head 😂 loved your review ❤
FYI, during a recent trip to Europe from the US, the Beis worked as a carry on for my family on Jet Blue, American Airlines and Easy Jets. It was a tight squeeze on Easy Jets though. Definitely don’t want to overpack when using that airline.
I bought Monos carry-on in the Fall. Love the quality of the luggage. I also bought the next size up for when I need a check-in bag. I bought cloth covers for these at Amazon to protect. Well worth it
It's interesting how each person can have a totally different experience with suitcases. I refused to buy Away it wasn't my favorite design and I wanted something with more attention to details. But now I can admit my husband's bag performed better than mine during out latest trip. When I found Monos, I was excited to get the Carry-On Pro Plus, since I love front pockets. But after purchasing it and using it, I can't say I am completely happy about my investment. I definitely think you need to read the pros and cons before buying! 😕 Reasons: 1) Handle does not feel as sturdy as others in the market. And I am actually surprised to see some reviews saying they felt it was the sturdiest? Very confusing to me, as my husband's Away handle seemed more robust. My Monos handle jiggles a bit and does not have the firmness that I was looking for. Do I think it will break? Not really. But I feel more confident with a handle that has more stability. And I agree with one reviewer who said the location of the button is not the best, as I feel I am always pressing it, even when just walking. 2) If you carry a medium-large backpack, the suitcase has a tendency to fall forward, when placing the backpack on top. This did not happen to the Away bag, and I think the reason is the extension zipper. It makes the bag wider, more stable, like a square block. 3) The laptop compartment!! I struggled to fit my 16'' computer in the designated slot (laptop doesn't even have a case!). Instead, I had to use the next pocket. Despite the specifications, it felt the space was very tight and that the laptop was being squished a bit, especially when closing the compartment. What if I had a case on it? 😓 Also, if storing a laptop, forget about adding any other device or chargers. No space. 4) Lastly, the available space within my bag was noticeably lacking in comparison to the capacity offered by my husband's Away suitcase (which extends in volume considerably after opening the zipper). As a frequent traveler, maximizing packing efficiency is of utmost importance to me, and unfortunately, Monos fell a bit short in this regard. Still better than other tiny carry-ons, but not as great as the other brand. If you're a light packer or business traveler, then I am sure this suitcase works great for you. I loved the style, details and color. But my husband and I often take only a carry-on, and while I am not a heavy packer, I do need to have flexibility in the space available. I feel this carry-on can evolve to include an extension zipper, and a larger front pocket, (maybe by digging more into the suitcase itself?).
like all products, you really need to test it yourself. reviews are nice but every reviewer has their own bias. by bias is that luggage has to be at first a beauty to look at. with that said i own only rimowas. add to that the wheels, locks, and hard case. . yes expensive but with lifetime guarantee and stores everywhere in the world for repairs etc. just cannot be beat by any of the other brands
Enjoyed your video and appreciate all the time you invested in the information provided. I was struggling between Monos, July, and Quince. I reached out to all three with the exact same question and Monos was the worst in customer service. Quince and July both responded quickly and had fantastic customer service. I purchase the Quince Carry on but sadly I found out it comes from overseas and although it said shipped with tracking number it has yet to move after several days. So I reached out to customer service about that and yep it won't arrive on time so that will be returned. Their timeline is from Chin 6-9 days from once it is ordered until it actually gets on a plane then another few days from that. July offered expedited delivery for a fee and they have warehouses in the USA so it will be delivered quickly. In addition, the cost of the July bag includes tax and free shipping over $100 within a week. I ordered the July Light Carry On Expandable because the country requires carry on 35 lbs or less so if you travel to Japan or other countries with serious weight limits consider July. I've also heard they really back their warranty. The customer service I received just ordering was fantastic. Can't wait to try the bag out.
Great review, I have all Monos luggage, two carry -ons, my wife took my first one. That gave me the opportunity to purchase the carry on plus, which is my go to for short trips and I have a medium check bag for weeklong trips., and just purchased my wife the Monos large check bag, she packs more than me. Mono's my jam!
I’ve been using my Monos Carryon Plus for a little over a year and it’s the best luggage I’ve ever owned. It fit the overhead bins of all flights yet roomy enough for a week’s worth of clothes. The compression pad with its beefy straps is the best part about it. Never again will I get luggage that only has the V straps and one buckle. It looks good without being flashy and is a high quality product. The one time I checked it, it did get a few scuffs and scratches but to me it gives it character. It shows that it’s been places and not just sitting in a closet.
that one will not meet most of the international airline's size requirements, which have a maximum height limit of 22 inches at most, or 21.5. Monos Prois 23 inches.
About 6 months ago, I did a ton of online research and compared several of the bags you featured. I settled on the Mono's for the very same reasons you did: Quality of exterior/interior materials, handle and wheels. I purchased mine from Nordstroms as they had the best price. Limited color choices but closer to the $250US range. Only thing I do not like is the handle release button that is located under the handle. When I am moving, steering or pulling the suitcase my fingers oftentimes makes the handle collapse down because of the location of this button. I personally would prefer the button on top of the handle. Other than that, this suitcase is absolutely perfect.
Bought a July carry on a few months ago and was dreading this video but honestly I’m glad my months of obsessing and research before the purchase was supported its by placement at number two. Glad I passed on Calpak, saw on sale at Marshall’s and agree, it feels very cheap.
The one thing that I hate about soft shells is they are a magnet for bed bugs, mildew, stains etc. soft shells are the carpet of homes and hard shells are hard wood floors.
@@awaytogether Do you really need a hard case carry on if the bag never gets checked in? Bag is lighter and it's going into overhead storage...so why the need for an expensive hard shell?
Thanks for the great review of these carry-bags. Here's my 2 cents on Away versus Monos. I have bought and used both of these. I recently bought the Monos carry on for a trip to Greece. The telescopic handle kept getting stuck and would not slide easily up and down, which was a huge pain throughout my trip. When I reached out to Monos, they told me to pack my items differently so as not to put too much weight on the side with the handles. That is crazy to me! They also said to use compression cubes (which I already do use) and I'm not sure how this would help the handle situation. In other words, their customer service was not easy to navigate. Now I have to send pictures of the handle (not sure what they'll see in the pics that will help them with my claim). In contrast, a handle broke on my Away bag and they sent me a new bag right away and told me to put the damaged bag in the box they sent the new bag in and return to them. My take away is I'm going to stick to Away bags because their customer service is so much better than Monos!
So... you're sticking with the company whose product actually broke on you?? I don't understand that logic. The issue with your Monos, while annoying-- at least it didn't break. That would've solidified Monos as the winner imo.
Yaaaaaay, I’m a Monos girl - I have the carry on & the medium checked case - love both of them - use with compression cubes - perfectly sufficient for a 5-6 week visit to my daughter in New Zealand from the U.K. I also have the Away Everyday bag for my personal item that goes under seat - sorted!! Still tempted by the large checked case, but not sure that I can justify the cost! Loving all of your videos - all very helpful - thanks 😊
I travel for work in the US frequently & have used my BÉIS as a carry on for every single flight this year - best bag I have ever traveled with. As someone else mentioned, the ‘expanders’ are for compression. I agree that it’s not a good option for international travel due to size, otherwise I highly recommend it.
I carry on my Beis bag for business and personal travel constantly, I have literally never had a problem. My bag was grabbed at check-in twice in Europe, both times flying out of smaller airports in non-EU countries, and they were taking almost everyone's bags anyway. I have several other Beis products, I love them all. If you don't like what the brand offers, go buy something else, but if the brand speaks to you - it's great!
My family of four have been using this bag since last summer. We've traveled quite a bit since. Including to Europe and didn't have any problems carrying them on. I do agree that they can get heavy if you over pack. Lol but that's the same with any other bad. That being said my son and I both did a 9 day tour to Italy and we only brought our carryons and packing bags.
Monos carry on plus bags are the same size as the beis, and Monos has said most major airlines allow a few extra inches from the 22x14x9 standard. Might be unfair to review beis poorly simply on size when most airlines will allow it.
@@dessison3782 I had my Beis carry on checked four times on international trips. It worked as carry-on on the first leg of the trips, but once I had to make any connection it was too big. On the way back the staff had me check it for the entire trip home. It's a fantastic suitcase, but I found it was not worth the hassle internationally. :( So I'm looking for something smaller. I really hate checking luggage.
I have carry-on luggage by both Away and Beis and I have never had a problem carrying either of them domestically or internationally. What I also like about both of these companies is the warranties and the options and varieties of other personal item bags that make it easier to create a carry-on travel set.
I have viewed so many bags and best lists over the last two or so days, full time. Nearly all that are advertised as carry-on are too big, in one or two dimensions, for Air France, my upcoming carrier. I may have to accept the risk that I may not be able to carry on my preferred carry-on. I like your review but even your top pick, which I like a lot, is not quite small enough for my trip to Italy. So, like other international travelers, I am stuck with a few alternatives that may not be perfect, like your top pick, but are within dimensions and have acceptable quality. The search continues---if I want all the cool features plus total peace of mind that my bag is in fact carry-on size in all dimensions.
My wife bought Away carry on. I hated the zipper as it was mentioned in this video and flimsy handle. Went with monos and for the price range, like it a lot better thanks to lighter weight, better zipper and handle. Not a fan of Monos compression style, but overall I find it better than Away.
A nice use case for the expandable feature of a carry-on is that you can buy things on a trip and pack more than you arrived with, which makes it more worth while to check in if you need to.
The code is automatically applied. Not sure where you are getting the $1000 amount? I am in USA and got discount and free shipping for 2 Monos Carry on Pro’s.
Excellent job on this video! Really well done, high quality, and edited so there's no bloat. Not a time waster in any way. Thank you! I have a Monos carry on and love it, but was looking at other options for family members and was curious how it stacked up. I came here looking for a review of the NOBL carry on, so if you ever do an update to this video or an additional one, it would be great to see them included!
100% No on the Monos! I’ve done a lot of carryon travel the past few years and it does not roll well and the telescoping handle constantly gets stuck. 100% no
So glad to have found this video! I had been eyeing the Beis and had similar thoughts about it being a carry-on! Although I am also eyeing their weekender bag too! A few things I might add to your video is packing the same items in each bag to see how it all fits, and then testing the weight of the bag post-packing. I usually carry-on a cloth bag because then tend to be lighter in weight and when you are trying to heft the bag in an airplane overhead compartment, the hard case bags are a little heavier. I also like bags with a shoe compartment, and none of the ones you featured have that. Another thing I would add to your video is the warranty offered by the manufacturer. I know the Away bag has a pretty friendly warranty so if the zipper breaks or a handle breaks, you can send it back for a replacement bag. Not sure though how their warranties stack up and whether or not its a hassle or they take the suit cases back with no questions asked. I buy a LOT of suitcases from either Marshall's or TJ Maxx (known at TK Maxx in the UK), and find LOTS of quality bags that are all under $100.
Kudos! Great review & presentation. Your passion comes thru easily in the video. Most unfortunately for me I was a sucker for marketing and fell for Nomatic! On the balance the bag has served me well. But looks like Monos looks great on it's own merit. Thanks for doing this review! This helps us all make the Right Choices. Keep up the good work man!
i had a Monos and an Away and gave my Monos to my mom. I wasn't happy with the compression on Monos as it goes sideways which hindered in storing my bag while traveling. Good video!!
Really appreciate this video! I was tempted by Away, but looking into Monos now. One feature of Away that I haven't seen on other carry ons is the underside handle on the bag itself. This is very cool because you can easily grab your bag from almost any side. I haven't seen this on any other website and didn't see it mentioned in the video.
I've never had an issue using the Beis carry on except on a small plane from Singapore to Malaysia, but they just checked in my bag at the gate and didn't charge me for it. I love how much the Beis suitcase fits - I've gone on multiple 3 week trips just it. My favorite thing is the large capacity as I'm an overpacker and want to bring all options with me.
I purchased the monos for my husband and myself for Christmas! Thanks for the review. Made me feel like I did the right thing. We are off to Ireland to put them to the test. Wish I had ordered with you to get the link. Thanks for doing the video though. I will share it with others. ❤
Great video! I bought the Beis carryon a few months back and I really like it. I also have used it as a carryon on Alaska, Southwest, and United (I was kind of surprised TBH that it didn’t get flagged for checking at the gate); neither time I had expanded though. The wheels are super smooth and I just like everything about it. For me when I was purchasing it came down to Monos, and Beis. I am really happy with my choice but I do know it is a bit larger but I do think for the price it is a really nice bag.
Thanks for the great comparison. I would really like to see some bags that have expansion, though. I have gone on 5 week tours with carry-on only. I flew KLM with a strict size limit and meager weight allowance, so a smaller, light bag was mandatory on the plane. The expansion was important to me, though. I wore my bulkier shoes and and jacket on the plane. However, when traveling from town to town on the tour, I didn't want to wear those articles on the warmer days. It was nice to be able to expand my bag and to pack them. When you do another comparison, I'd love to see bags with expansions. Thanks.
I'm interested in buying the level eight but I'm not finding any information about the width of the handle. It seems wide and I'm worried that my personal item won't fit over it. Have you tried that yet?
Thank you so much for putting all of this together! I have been meaning to buy me a monos one but was unsure. I will use your link to get me one. Thank you for the research you did. I hope this video will go viral! Thanks again!
It’s unfortunately (for me) that hard shell suitcases are overtaking the market, because the pros and cons still doesn’t outweigh the versatility and functionality of a soft shell. Even for waterproofing reasons…I’ve seen a lot of busted up hardsells at baggage claim, so durability and water sealing doesn’t seem all that great imo. Please luggage companies, DO NOT stop making quality soft shell options. There are still customers who prefer it over the new disposable trend!
@@mattymatt1 good to know which materials wouldn’t crack, but some get really scratched the hell up by the conveyor systems and manual handling by airport staff. I love the idea of multiple outside pockets. It’s rare to see a hard shell with that feature…if they do, it’s probably only one pocket that isn’t very deep or flexible. I also hate the way most, if not all, hard shells open. You have to pull the zipper through the dirty wheels and fully to the other side to get anything out. I can unzip a shoftshell 1/3 of the way and get things out due to the flex nature of the suitcase. Also, the slit half concept of hard shells takes up more real estate when opened. If I’m against the wall with a soft shell, I could open the lid of the suitcase and occupy half of the floor space than a hard shell would. Hard shell usually lack internal compartment also, thus forcing you to buy packing cubes, etc.. Most soft shells multiple internal compartments to store items that doesn’t take away from the main packing space. I get it, it’s all a preference. Therefore companies need to continue to produce quality soft shells at a decent level of option variety for those who still prefer it over hard shell.
@@Teras2003 I mean, if I'm buying a carry-on, for the price I'm gonna pay, I want it to be a carry-on when I'm traveling and wherever I'm traveling. I won't buy the Monos-Plus either. Don't want to take the chance that it will be a checked bag😅
Interesting, but hard to convince me to switch to any hardside bag from my Briggs & Riley ZDX 22" spinner. Expands when needed, looks great, and a fantastic warranty.
Heres what I say is better:
1) Soft Shell because the zipper is usually in the front and you dont have to worry about two sides at the same time when the hardshells are split in half.
2) No Gimicky features like a pull out closet or things that add more weight. (For the love of humanity, don't get those electronic suit cases that drive around)
3) TSA locks are great when we need to look inside, and you do not want your bags damaged.
What’s a suitcase you recommend then?
@@rachelperrone1260 lol real question
What's your recommended all-time suitcase then? PS: I was sold on to the hard case suitcase and thought it was the best as it protects your stuff.
blame the tech youtubers who love the crap out of bags that have use ports. they love charging the ever loving crap out of there gear. you know, laptop, phone, tablet, camera, and etc.
Thanks! Love your efficiency. Watching you is like getting a bullet point todo list!!!
I'm an Away girlie. I have the bigger carry on, the medium, and the Expandable Bigger Carry-On. I LOVE them all!
@@s3uoqI watched another video where the person weighed the July bag and also said it was much heavier than advertised.
@michelleassous Do you have a link for that video please.
Those "expansion" zippers are actually "compression" zippers. You're supposed to pack with the zipper open, then after you close your bag, you compress your bag by zipping the compression zipper back up. Cheers.
Mindblown haha, never used an expandable luggage.
@johndekalb3599.....this is really good to know. Thanks for mentioning
Yes!!!!
@raeleohana8797 I've done Delta, air france, aero Mexico, American Airlines. Same carry-on.
Love my Monos luggage great brand 😊
I’ve had a Calpak for over five years now. Bought it from Marshall’s for $40. Still works great! Nothing has broken.
Samsonite is not chic enough - it's your parents bag- that's probably why- I've flown weekly for work and I have a Samsonite soft case- nothing wrong with it
I had to return the Freeform because it doesn’t work with International airline’s requirements, like Air Canada and all the European airlines
Thanks so much Jerry! Appreciate you taking the time to write and VERY glad we could help you in some way.
How did the bag fail that caused it to bust?
I love my BÉIS carry on. I’ve travelled within Canada and internationally and never had any issues. It always fits in the cabin
Thank you so much for that, I just bought one and was nervous about the size!
You will love it! We have two and they are perfect!

Can you poke a pen into the zipper and open the luggage? Unless the luggage comes with double coil zippers, I'll take a hard pass.
i read monos has a lot of bad customer service when it comes to warranty but I still bought one and then experienced that customer service myself.
This is by far the best review I've seen. I really enjoyed and appreciate the straight-up, factual, and emphatic points made. Thank you!
I have the hybrid but haven’t used it yet. I’m worried that it will just open on its own😩so I’m going to wrap it and then put a luggage cover over it.
How's the July luggage holding up? I've read multiple negative reviews for July specially with the Customer Service
Briggs & Riley Sympatico hard case carry on would have been a great contender! Lifetime warranty. Very well built.
I just used the Monos medium checked bag for Europe and loved it so much. Worth every penny
I too use a soft bag for travel. Biggest problem is carrying in airports when my family roll their bags. My duffel works for, may not for others
So well done! I appreciated you testing all sorts of features, especially the wheels on brick sidewalk. Thank you for the super content! :D
😕
Reasons:
1) Handle does not feel as sturdy as others in the market.
I have been using my Travelpro for about 8 years now on at least 20 trips, and it's still going strong.
I LOVE My TravelPro Set!!! 💜
Travel Pro is what they required when I was a flight attendant. 🥳🥳🥳
Nik, thanks for the video. Just ordered the Monos Carryon Plus and an accessory using your link. You made my decision easy. Good luck in your travels.
The editing on this video is fantastic! Well done!
I love the way hard-sided cases look, but i've always found soft-sided luggage to be more useful.
Thanks for commenting! Would you mind expounding on why you see it that way? (I could be researching for a future video right now)
Interested to hear your thoughts on how they’re more useful
Excellent advice. Thank you
So... you're sticking with the company whose product actually broke on you??
I used Beis for international trips as a carry on with no problem, Italy and Philippines.
Internationally where? If I don’t mind me asking
I'm going to Thailand for 17 days and was thinking about getting an Away. Does it fit well in the overhead bin without having to be checked?
I just ordered mine. I can’t wait to get it!
"You're not here for good, you're here for BEST" 😆Awesome video man
A nice use case for the expandable feature of a carry-on is that you can buy things on a trip and pack more than you arrived with, which makes it more worth while to check in if you need to.
I bought two Monos based upon video. 30% off for Black Friday. The Black Carry on Pro cost me $199 a piece when I bought 2. We absolutely love them!!
I don’t see 30% off unless you buy $1000+ - do you have a code?
The code is automatically applied. Not sure where you are getting the $1000 amount? I am in USA and got discount and free shipping for 2 Monos Carry on Pro’s.
Great review. Thorough, comprehensive & straight to the point in this video.
Thanks for your research.
I just scooped up the Monos carry during their Black Friday sale. Thanks for this informative review.
I bought 2 Monos carry ones and 2 medium check ins last week. Looking forward to using them on an upcoming trip!! Your video was very informative!
Phew, I got a Monos and love it. Glad to hear it’s not just me. Great video and breakdowns.
Great info, Thanks! I had been considering a model from a couple of those manufacturers. Appreciate the details you shared.
Please do the same for soft-sided carry ons.
Excellent video! Thanks so much for the thorough reviews and comparisons!
100% No on the Monos! I’ve done a lot of carryon travel the past few years and it does not roll well and the telescoping handle constantly gets stuck. 100% no
Had monos for over a year, multiple international travels with no issues
@@eltebux Monos stopped using hinimoto wheels. No thanks.
As a first time international traveler on my upcoming trip to the UIK, I really appreciate your insights. Thanks. I'm a little less nervous about it.
Such a well made video, no bs, straight to it, Well done
i had a Monos and an Away and gave my Monos to my mom. I wasn't happy with the compression on Monos as it goes sideways which hindered in storing my bag while traveling. Good video!!
This is an awesome review 😀👏🏾! Monos carryon bag will be the bag I look at buying down the road.Keep the awesome information coming !
I am going with AWAY they have new bags that came out 1-2 months ago. It addresses all the issues he mentioned.
Thanks.
I completely agree. Expansion is also useful on your way home if you bought too many souvenirs or gifts. You can alway check it in.
Bought the Monos bag using your link. Thank you for the content. Very helpful
Do an add on video comparing the Briggs and Riley - those are really next level suitcases
Great video, thanks for putting in the work!
Soft shell all the way!
And waterproofing is only pertinent if your luggage falls into a body of water. Which, at that point... 🥴
🤷🏽♀️ Just purchase a plastic luggage cover.
I’m curious to see the cost of manufacturing the hard shell vs. soft shell. (Ie hard shell using a molding process, more cost effective?)
I totally agree. I hate hard shell. I also hate spinner bags as the elevated four wheels waste space. I like soft shell two wheels.
Super review! Extremely helpful. Many thanks.
I bought a Monos right before watching this video. Thank you for validating my purchase. It was a lot of money but sounds worth it!
Wow thanks a lot for the video. I was really into the Beis carry-on and it never crossed my mind to look at the size of it 😅
Same! It was always all over my tiktok. 😅
I love my Tumi softside. Not switching to hard shell. Had it 20+ years, domestic and international travel. Never a problem.
