  • Bob talks to Karen Haid about her second book. ‪@ItalianRootsandGenealogy‬
Journey to the small, rocky region in the heart of the Italian south, to a land where ancient pagan rites live alongside those of the Catholic Church, world-class wine washes down edible hyacinth bulbs, and the air is infused with the ideals of Roman poets and brigands.

Thank you. I have family from Bella, Basilicata and it's hard to find much information on the area apart from Matera!

    Hi Karen
    Thanks for this video.
My mother is from Montescaglioso. Your description and accuracy of information is exceptional. Is area is relatively unexplored, Matera is changing that and bringing much needed money tourist into the region. Finally don't you find the people friendly beyond belief?

My family is from Basilicata, Accettura and I’ve been told that there is a large Strega community from that area. They were the good “witches”- so I found it interesting when you spoke about the blending of the pagans and the Christians. I was told from my elder family members that the Strega stayed under the radar of the Christians and Catholics at the time, rather than get on their bad side, they cooperated with the church in someway therefore preserving their culture.

Cristo was coming from south … He stopped in Eboli not to go further.
