Hi Tory, I bought a steed rod from a hardware store, DIY merchant and cut to the length that I needed. The rod is about 6mm diameter steel, so nice and rigid. then I bought some large washers from the same store, these just slide over the rod, with wooden beads and balls in between, I think I had to drill the holes out about 7mm so that they spin on the rod. Finally I made 2 small wooden blocks to fit at each end, I made sure that when drilling and fitting the rod into the wood, that the washers are lifted away from the surface of the board so that they can spin freely, then I know that I can drill two exact holes into the 2 pieces of wood, and glue in the steel rod. Very similar method for the nut and bolts abacus too. Hope this helps.
Hi, this is a great board, I'm looking to do the same for my little boy, how did you join the 2 sides, like make the overall triangle shape? I have a board but think it may be too heavy, so now I'm considering joining two pieces and making a two sided board but don't know how to join them together, any tips would be great
Thank you I have so many extra idea. Made 2 before but they were never this good
Thank you Laura, I appreciate your kind comments
Can I receive instructions on how to make the homemade abacus?
