  • So while in Japan I did a Weekend trip down to the Izu Peninsula.
Herping on Honshu especially in Summer seemed to be pretty hard so I didn't get my hopes up too much about finding herps.
Saw a lot of cool stuff but only found dead snakes, right up until late afternoon on the last day that is.
When we came upon this Tiger keelback snake (Rhabdophis tigrinus) that I even managed to catch.
These snakes are very special not only because of their beauty but because they are not only venomous but also poisonous.
The get the poison form the toads and newts they feed on and can store it in special glands in their neck.
Hope you enjoy the vid guys!

What a beautiful snake! I liked the b-roll of all the other Japanese wildlife as well, the wildlife of East Asia has always fascinated me. Great work Fred!

"5 foot snake" made me wonder if you use the imperial measuring system or if this was just a courtesy to your viewers which might be mostly American? Awesome stuff dude. I'm way pumped for rhabdophis and plan on making my own video on poisonous west coast garter snakes. They don't have nuchal glands like rhabdophis. I hear a garter snake that stops feeding on toxic salamanders that it roughly can take a year before its tissues are considered non-toxic. Dr Butch Brody would use a metal trough as a racetrack, inject TTX into some garter snakes that had different levels of resistance to it, and then take measurements on their drunken/impaired slithering. Alan St.John mentioned finding garter snakes over here that had just consumed salamanders and how drunken and sluggish they were as he observed them. This is something I'd love to get video of sometime if I have the great luck to stumble upon such a sight.

Nope, metric system rules! ;-) It's just that most my viewers are American and to be honest it is more likely that a European knows how many feet equal a meter, than an American knowing. So are garters also venomous or just poisonous? If you need any Rhadophis footage just let me know.

@@TheBavarianHerper "it is more likely that a European knows how many feet equal a meter, than an American knowing." The sad thing is they actually teach us that in school during science classes!

There is only one species of monkey native to Honshu, Macaca fuscata fuscata. The other subspecies, Macaca fuscata yakuni is found only on Yakushima, off the coast of Kyushu.

I try not to be a smartass about stuff like this but poison is harmfull when you ingest it, where as venom is harmfull when injected. Tiger keelback venom is medically significant and people have been killed by it. And if it doesn't kill you there is a high chance it will damage your kidneys.
