Building the TotalBoat work skiff - Painting on the wet edge (Episode 33)

  • I have been waiting a while for this, today we are going to apply our first coat of topside paint, but first we need to give our primed surface a good sanding. I'm sanding the entire boat by hand because it gives me a better feel and allows me to keep a nice fair shape. We are also going to touch up the ends of our cover boards with a chisel and some sandpaper so they can act as chock for a line. We are going to paint our topsides with TotalBoat Wet Edge Cold Cure. It's pretty cool in the Open Door Boatshop this time of year and this paint can be used down to 45 degrees F so that makes it ideal for us in this case. For me, this is one of the most fun parts of building a boat because when I apply the paint, it really lets me see the shape of the boat and how fair the hull is. I couldn't be more excited, we are getting closer and closer to putting our skiff in the water, stay tuned for our final episodes and remember to join us at the Jamestown Distributors tent sale April 22, 2017 in Bristol, RI.

    It amazes me each time I watch one of your videos, just how fast that time goes by. Checking to see how much time is left has become a habit and a sort of sad feeling comes over me when there isn't but a minute left. Also, the simple fact that many people like me who are watching can already do many of the things we are being shown. And yet, we watch, we learn, we smile when you smile, and as I do, some of us make notes. Learning from someone who enjoys teaching is for life long use. You just don't forget when a passion to learn meets a passion to teach. I personally can hear many people from my youth. "Do it right, do it once". You'd expect a lot, but you'd make a good boss.
    On a bit of a funny note, you sound like George Carlin so much and even look a bit like him as well. It's a good thing, really.

    That's the first time I have seen someone demonstrate a bowline in that way, its the exact way I tie one every time and the "slippery" bowline was great too. I was taught to use a highwayman's hitch for that purpose, but your explanation of it's use makes complete sense and I will keep in mind the next time I am tying off. Binge watching this whole series has been amazing especially the explanations of why each process and decision was made. I'm not sure well a boat like this would work here in QLD Australia as the sun tends to bake things much worse than up north there, but it shows anything can be achieved with time and patience. I grew up using an old "Boston whaler" style ketch sail boat that would seal up fine if you used it every month or so, but that also meant the paint would suffer in sun as well as the swelling and drying, though it was at least 25 years old at the time, now more like 45-50 years old. Looking forward to the new V bottom build starting now.

    You are amazing with your Skills and knowledge . I just started watching your videos and I really enjoy them . But I was screaming at the screen when you used such a harsh sandpaper . And now that I see the primer as your painting it shows just how deep you went .
    I've been painting since I was 10 and I'm 60 now so I would say I have a little experience . You can get a better finish by using 150 and that's even a little rough but as you said you like to really rough the surface up . But you will get the same results and get a Beautiful finish by following my suggestion . I have built a lot if things but never a boat . Being disabled I don't think I could do it now , but I just might try a scale model size . Maybe about 20 inches or so . That's how much you have motivated me . You have a Great way of teaching . And I really like how you explain things . And one thing that I really like is that you change the way you did things before a little , Alot of times people are afraid to change the way they do things . And by doing that you showed us that its not so straight forward and that you can put your personal touch on the projects we do . Looking forward to more of your projects .

    The reason the roller works for laying off or "tipping" is the nap is very short otherwise it would not work. The "cold cure" is actually in reference to the solvents used in the epoxy, the colder the weather the hotter the solvents in addition to the epoxy formulation. Tipping is a term used for brushes but seems to be used in your video for the roller method. I thoroughly enjoyed watching these videos. My expertise comes from a career in industrial coatings and my interest is in sailing craft.

    Very nice. Got a question. I don't know how the question is going to sound to you guys, but here goes. If someone wanted their boat to be painted without pigmentation could it be done? Protected with coats of sometime like clear coat. Something about the natural wood look just looks good to me. Some color is good, don't get me wrong. Even my landscaping fixtures are sometimes natural finished.

    • @KayZee1957
      @KayZee1957 7 лет назад

      Yes. Light (fiber) glass, like four once, will protect the wood and when wet out with epoxy the weave of the glass becomes invisible. For examples, look up how they finish strip built canoes and kayaks.

    • @kalei50
      @kalei50 7 лет назад

      That's actually a great question. The paint on this boat looks really nice, but i could definitely see the appeal of something like this with a natural finish. Older Chris crafts come to mind as one example.

      A long time ago, I made a very large darkroom sink out of 7/8" marine plywood and coated it with several coats a clear marine grade epoxy finish. It was a bit hazy but the woodgrain showed through nicely. Though often filled with water and some very corrosive photo chemicals, the sink remained tight for the ten years I used it. I had to sell it when I moved to a smaller darkroom but the photography school that bought it used it for 15 more years until they closed. So, yes. Clear marine finish holds up very well.

    Looking good! I hope your top side paint turns out better than my experience with the regular Total Boat Topside. Mine ended up with an orange peel finish. I applied as per instructions but not a very smooth finish. The primer came out ok and I did see a few reviews stating this could be a problem but went with it anyway. Anyways, best of luck. Always look forward to see your videos, learn a lot.

  • @thomasarussellsr
    @thomasarussellsr 5 лет назад

    Personally, as a wood lover, I would ask what clear finish you would recommend. However, even though your epoxy paint hides the wood grain, it does look like a sharp boat.
