    Thank you Graham for your inspiring and friendly videos. I recovered my sons old 2009 macbook pro which was waiting to go to Apple to be 'recycled' as it had a keyboard failure - I presume a liquid spill. Used it as a cerebral challenge, ordered a new KB and back light which came today and it's all back together working like a happy I5 lappy. It'll now find a new home in the village after being reformatted and Montaray put on it ( from Mr Macintosh RUclips tutorial). Keep up the inspirational videos.

    Suggestion for thermal paste removal. I've found that dry-rubbing off the mass of it first avoids too much of a mess. Using cotton-swabs or paper towels. Then apply the cleaner (IPA, Orange based, etc) to the remains to soften it then wipe.

    the reason apple made their own ssd design is because it was first introduced with the 2010 macbook air which predated m.2. With the retina generation they would have been in development since 2011 which also predates the standard

      @@Adamant_IT Another gotcha is that the original SSDs are AHCI PCI devices, not NVMe, because these designs also pre-date NVMe. Some MBs (2013 Air?) need a firmware update (bundled with newer MacOS versions) to boot from NVMe, and even then, IIRC, they have problems with suspend to RAM not working.

      Technically yes, but in practise I actually prefer to leave it as Normal priority (which is what it gets set to) because modern macs don't get bogged down by heavy transfers like they used to. • @Adamant_IT
      @Adamant_IT  2 года назад

      Auto-detect doesn't always get exactly the right chip, it was actually slightly out in this video, but also as this video shows, that doesn't seem to matter most of the time. It's not hard to manual-select though, so I do that most of the time.
      And yes, you can get adaptors for all (removable) MacBook SSDs. Make sure you get the right one for the year though, as there are differences.

    • @Adamant_IT

      I'd just use a SATA SSD, such as the Crucial MX500. There's no perceivable difference in performance when using the laptop, and there's nothing you can connect to a pre-retina macbook that'll go faster than 500MBps anyway.
