    Because you used another router before, following the instructions from Asus for cutting off power to the modem and then reconnecting and restarting it is the simplest way for most viewers to tell an ISP that you are now using a different modem, IMHO. Most people are buying the Asus as a replacement for a router they previously used. If you don’t follow the instructions fairly closely, you can get your new Asus router to never work - ask me how I know. I am watching this to see how to correctly set up the new replacement wireless router that Asus and Amazon sent me. Thanks for making this video.

    Eric, I think you'll find that the set up is easier if you power off the modem before you start. Many won't switch to a different client (here the ASUS AC 1900) until they are rebooted. I'd expect the problems you have connecting until you set the MAC address are caused by your refusal to power cycle the modem at the start. FWIW, my Surfboard SB6141 and AC1900 work this way.

    I was hoping your video would show how to setup under LAN a ROUTE. I wanted to move all my LED lights to their own network. So I took our my older RT-N16 and setup its own SSID. I plugged this router from it's WAN port to a LAN Port of my existing network which runs using a Asus RT-AC68U. So to be clear. The RT-AC68U is my router which is connected to my cable modem from its WAN port.
    I have a ton of devices and I use the function of manually assigning static ip address under the LAN page and then the DHCP tab. I actually reached the limit of 65 addresses that you can assign.
    I do all these assignment so if I have to reach a device I know the ip address and it will never change.
    To continue:
    I then took out my old Asus RT-N16 router. I connected this router via its WAN port to a port on my RT-AC68U router.
    I actually have another router but its my Omma phone system.
    Then I noticed a setting under the LAN page of the RT-AC68U. Goto to Route tab.
    There it said you can add a router especially if you are adding a router behind this router.
    I am not sure if I should bother with this setting or if I should use it.
    I am uncertain of what addresses get put into the fields and if I should select WAN or LAN at the end of the line?
    Are you able to guide me?
    Thank you!
    Rob

    So it appears that this has to be hard wired to the internet source? Would have loved a way to get a repeater to be half way between my modem and master bedroom. Any ideas? This works wired, will it work wireless? I don't think so, let me know if anyone has any thoughts. Thanks

    This worked for me. I'm not sure if it was changing the connection type to Automatic IP or inputting the old router MAC or both. Thank you.

      I know you said it worked. But you could also try undoing the MAC address spoof and unplugging your modem for about 1 minute or longer and plugging it back in. That works for some people as well and is a more permanent fix if it does work for you!

    I am plugging this router into an existing cable modem/router that is broadcasting an SSID for the house. I intend to use this router in my office with its own SSID for my business but keep the cable modem/router unchanged which the household will continue to use as their wifi. Are there any special settings for this configuration?

    • @HomeNetworkCentral
      @HomeNetworkCentral  4 года назад

      In theory, you should just be able to plug an ethernet cable into a LAN port on your existing router and the other end of the cable into the WAN/Internet Port of your office router and all should be good with factory settings. But if that doesn't work let me know because you may have to do some custom routing.

    Can anyone confirm if this router has colour changing WAN LED ? Mine just blinks blue all the time whether the internet is up or down, as long as a cable is plugged into WAN port with Modem. Contacted Asus support but even after 8 emails they barely have a clue about it. They are asking to send the RT-AC1990P for diagnostics, not ready to accept or confirm anything.

      baymeo split As I understand it, this is the updated version of the AC86U, since that one is a few years old at this point.

    • @HomeNetworkCentral
      @HomeNetworkCentral  4 года назад +1

      To access the internet yes. If you just want a local network to connect a few of your devices without internet access then a modem is not required for that.

    • @HomeNetworkCentral

      That is correct. You will either need to buy a router and a modem or you can buy a modem router combo which is both devices in one. This router does not have a modem built into it.

    Hi, I changed the username name and pass to my ASUS router(same as shown in this video) when I first set it up. I forgot both username and pass and now I can’t find a way to
    Log in and reset them.

    • @HomeNetworkCentral
      @HomeNetworkCentral  4 года назад

      Look on the back/bottom of the router for a pinhole labeled "reset". Make sure the router is powered on. Stick a paper clip or pen or something in the hole and hold the button down until the lights start flashing on the router (maybe about 10 seconds). That will reset all the settings and passwords to default.
