  • Emperor Nicholas II reigned for 22 years. With his murder, the last Orthodox Christian monarch, along with the thousand-year history of thrones and crowns in Russia, ended, ushering in an era of lawlessness, apostasy, and confusion, one which would sweep Holy Orthodox Russia into an abyss which would last more than 70 years.
A video production presented by Paul Gilbert, who did the research for this tribute, within the framework of the project for the book “The Romanov Royal Martyrs”.
“The Romanov Royal Martyrs” is an impressive 512-page book, featuring nearly 200 black & white photographs, and a 56-page photo insert of more than 80 high-quality images, colourized by the acclaimed Russian artist Olga Shirnina (Klimbim), and appearing here in print for the first time.

As a novice on this topic, here are my initial thoughts (as promised) after reading Chapter 1:
The book itself is beautifully presented. The collection of photos at the rear, coloured by Olga Shirnina, is itself a treasure and worth the purchase price.
The many photos dispersed throughout the book allow you to look into the soul of the characters as they grow, interrelate and speak to the reader, often through their own written words.
    What I learnt:
As separate souls, Nicholas and Alexandra were each independently pious Christians, (he Orthodox, she Lutheran) as a product of their upbringing, which essentially just brought out their inherent character. Even if they had never met, this chapter was worth telling.
Nicholas, being groomed as the next tsar, had a sense of duty to his people and humility to his sense of responsibility. He saw his role as the future Tsar in the context of the classic Russian triad (Tsar, Church, People) not as just a political figurehead but as a mentor and carer for his people. He saw this as a calling to lead through servitude.
“Deep rooted in his being was faith in the divine mission of the Tsar.”
Alexandra and Nicholas had fallen in love (virtually at first meeting) long before the prospect of their union ever began to crystallise.
Alexandra rejected the proposal by her beloved grandmother Queen Victoria to marry Prince Albert (‘Eddy’) and inevitably ascend to the British throne because she knew she loved Nicholas, and yet she was prepared to even forego that love, putting her faith first.
“She did not nurse any interest in titles and kingdoms.“
Going forward, I am particularly interested in two main questions: the role of Rasputin and just how Russia got to be involved in WWI despite having a peace-loving tsar. I have some thoughts from incidental reading but I can’t wait to see how this book crystallises by understanding.
Paul Gilbert was right - “If you read just ONE book on Nicholas II and his family, make sure it is this one.”

The Tsarevich was born with hemophilia inherited from Alexandra. He was close to death because of internal bleeding in his leg/hip after a fall.
Rasputin prayed over him and the bleeding stopped. To Alexandra he was sent from God.to save the heir. Her trust was misplaced contributing to their tragedy.

Thank you for allowing me to indulge. My comments are not intended to provide a commentary of the book, just my reaction in terms of thoughts and emotions as I read on. And please remember, I am learning most of the details for the first time, so I write not with authority but from a position of [in the words of Thomas Carlyle] ‘endless curiosity’.
Towards the end of Chapter 1, anyone who does not well up with teary emotion and exhilaration at the expression of affection between Nicholas and Alexandra and the triumph of their mutual love has never felt an emotion or known empathy.
As Chapter 2 gets underway our emotions are turned to a more sombre mode as Nicholas’ father Alexander confronts his fate as he lies on his death bed. His words of advice to Nicholas should be instilled in the minds of anyone, anywhere, considering a position of leadership. The whole passage is worth framing but I just cite the concluding line by Alexander:
      • “Strengthen the family, for it is the foundation of any state.”
We are buoyed again with the marriage and coronation of Nicholas and Alexandra. To the casual observer the coronation may appear all just “pomp and ceremony” but to the contemplative it is a very sombre and spiritual event.
      The playing of the Polychronion
      ruclips.net/video/hzxX-b6tcQM/видео.html
reminds us of the links of the Eastern Orthodox Church to Byzantium and opens up a vast new area of reflection and inquiry into the history of Moscow as the “Third Rome”.
It also reminds us of the very troubling declaration in the past few days of the Turkish regime’s intention to convert the Hagia Sophia into a Masjid or Mosque. It is hard not to digress, but I note that not all Islamic scholars agree with this.
This is not the first time that Sheikh Imran Hosein has been outspoken on this topic.
Hagia Sophia as a Masjid for the Second Time My First Response
      ruclips.net/video/2VIW5htmh8I/видео.html&feature=em-uploademail
Having digressed, I will pick up my reactions to the description of the four daughters OTMA and beyond in a subsequent comment.

He was also responsible for starving his own people, losing wars to both Germany and Japan, actively using the military and secret police to suppress opposing voices, isolating himself from the troubles of the Russian population and being hostile to reform. Only introducing half assed reforms like the Duma, where he was still in control when forced to after the 1905 revolution. He was a good man to his own family. The rest of Russia? Not so much. He was the architect of his own downfall and the abdication from the throne. The people that came after weren't any better and the Romanov-execution is a unforgivable crime by the Bolsheviks, but please don't act like this guy was a saint.

      @emcc8598 3 года назад

@@MikaelLV Nicholas II was a reluctant ruler under the old Russian Imperial system. In his time- he oversaw a number of major reforms and the evolution of the nascent Russian Duma. Russia at that time was a country in transition to the modern age and unfortunately both Nicholas and his children became the victims of widespread revolution sweeping across Europe at that time. It is also perhaps Ironic that which replaced the Russian Imperial dynasty - proved to be little better as its architects actively engaged in genocide and the mass murder of many millions of Russians and other ethnicities. Not until recent times have these atrocities been acknowledged for what they really were.

I've read, far too often, that, "Nicholas ll was not worthy of being the Tsar of Russia", to which I would have to respond, "Russia was not worthy of having Nicholas ll, as the Tsar of Russia!"
In a well minded group, it is the role of those below the leader to help the leader and make the leader look good.
If a company has bad employees, that company will falter. If a company has good employee, that company shall succeed, given that the leadership is not corrupt.
Tsar Nicholas ll had nothing but a bunch of selfish, atheistic, maniacal ne'er-do-wells for countrymen and women that were all too easily swayed by the Devil's ministers, in the likes of Lenin, Stalin, Trotsky, and millions more like them.
Oh sure, there were a few pious and faithful servants, but on a whole, nothing but evil minded individuals surrounded Nicholas ll.
In a moral society, no laws are needed. In an immoral society, no laws will work!
Nicholas ll fought the good fight; he remained faithful to God. Right up to the very end!
    God bless Nicholas ll !!!

I understand that many Russians starved in his reign. That he used solders to maim and kill Russians that were protesting against their meager good and means of shelter.
I myself have great empathy for Nicholas as a husband and Dad. I also think he was very good looking, and a sincere believer of Jesus our Lord.
Yet there is contradictory evidence of past brutality he imposed on russians. I think he really believed he was above the average russian, and not there to serve his people, but keep himself and his son in power.

@@laurabook9492 Read the book "Wall Street and the Russian Revolution" by Richard B. Spence, it displays in the first parts of the book precisely the problem with what you mean. Bloody Sunday, which I think you are referring to was actually an event planned ahead by father Gapon. Prior to the "protests" (violent) a man named Milyukov predicted that violence could not be avoided at the protest, something very prophetic, of course he was a player in these protests. Gapon warned Nicholas that "If you do not appear then the moral bonds between you and the people, who trust you, will disappear because innocent blood will now flow between you and the people".
There are also reports from the protests themselves that the protesters had revolvers with them, which is strange for a peaceful protest.
You cannot understand holy Nicholas II without understanding his role as a victim of a worldwide conspiracy against him to depose him, Russias Tsardom, Orthodox Christianity and impose soulless "democracy" and decadence.

He didn't even order violence (to the best of my knowledge) it's just his problem was his "religious" Belief in autocracy, this doomed him because everyone else in Europe 🇪🇺 had constitutions of some sort, do I agree? No but Nicholas Romanov was a good man none the less & his children were completely innocent.
My issues though is many "neutral" party's say "Nicholas & Alexandra had it coming not the children" or "Nicholas and Alexandra deserved to pay, not the children" the thing here is while these individuals believe that "yes spare the children kill the parents" the issues are you don't kill a person for mistakes, marie antoinette faced the same issue what she did wasn't a crime, just a problem. The same goes for the Romanov dynasty, mistakes were made, NOT intended

I found it in an antique store in April 2014, and when I came back in January 2015, it was still there. It was like it was waiting for me, maybe it was a sign of some sort. He lived in a Disneyland style palace away from the rest of the country and away from the people, totally ignorant of the poverty affecting most of his people. Not only was he detached from the common people, but after 1905 he and his family were detached from society (the aristocracy), as well. It was noted by Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovich (Nicholas II's aunt) and others that on the occasion of the Tercentenary in 1913, when Nicholas' two older daughters attended some balls, they didn't know anyone and didn't know how to mingle with society - they stuck to a few officers from their father's retinue. By the time of the 1917 Revolution, he had lost support from all the socio-economic groups in Russia, including the army.

Our book brings to light a multitude of unknown and unrevealed facts, which evince that many truths remain silenced or distorted to this day. Such are:
      • The achievements and great reforms of Tsar Nicholas' reign.
      • The events of the 1905 revolution and Bloody Sunday.
      • Russia’s and Tsar Nicholas’ involvement in WW1.
      • The plots and conspiracies to overthrow Tsar Nicholas from his throne.
      • The myth of the “Bread Revolution” and the truth about the February 1917 coup.

Beatrice: Sadly he is not a saint. He learned nothing, absolutely nothing between 1904 when his country was defeated and humiliated by the Japanese in a war and the onset of World War I. He should have remained neutral and not listened to those who thought war with Germany would succeed. Yes, he sacrificed millions of men in the war, his own family, and family members, but a better leader would have realized it would not end well. Betrayed and used by allies and family in France and England, the continuing war made it impossible to leave when he abdicated and he and his family were trapped and subsequently executed. His country was subjected to 73 years of criminal activity by the Bolsheviks/Communism which Rossi’s and the world is still feeling the effects. Tsar Vladimir Putin, anyone??

@@johnpickford4222 Saints are not perfect. Nicholas II was fallible in many ways politically, and his deep faith sometimes blinded him to the realities of the fin de siecle culture in Europe during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His psyche was that of a medieval Russian, while attempting to navigate the perplexities of a modern world bereft of much religious sensibility or piety. Yes, he and his family are 'saints' according to the paradigms of Orthodox Christianity, and their martyrdom at the hands of atheist Bolsheviks confirms it in that one era is pitted against another. The 'philosophy of God' slaughtered at Ekaterinburg by the 'philosophy of man'.
Constantine I, the first 'Christian' Emperor of the Romans, is known to historians as a violent and murdering individual, yet he is named a saint by the Byzantine Church because of what he did in legalizing Christianity ( AD 312 ) and promoting theological unity by calling the First Ecumenical Council ( AD 325 ). Orthodox iconography usually depicts St. Constantine and St. Helena ( his mother ) together with a full standing cross between them. The Western Church accepts Helena as a saint, but not her son due to reasons aforementioned.

What a great doco. The narrator is great.
I wonder what Nicolas II thought about the wrath of his beloved God he so worshipped when his whole family were taken down to the basement and shot by the Bolsheviks.

I believe Czar Nicholas II did not deserve his downfall and did not mean to hurt anyone. I cannot stop myself ,however, from being mad at his mismanagement. The bad decision making of Nicholas II were the nails on the coffin of the Russian Empire.

I agree he was well-meaning, but his downfall he brought about himself, as you noted by the bad decisions and mismanagement. When I read about all the bad decisions, many of them a the eleventh hour, I am almost inclined to believe the collapse of the empire was part of a divine plan.

Yes, she is his female version. Ermakov observed the family, he described Maria as 'the Emperor's favourite'. They had similiar personalities in my opinion too. I believe he seen himself in Maria. Probably why he didn't believe she should be punished for being mischievous.
