I have no videos saved . But it was mentioned in comments. A few years ago. Shabani and Ai had a child that died soon after birth. Then Annie was born. Perhaps someone in the community can give more details .

Strange that the door keeps closing. What a beautiful display of family dynamics, though, as they all rush off to the other entrance to "save" Annie! What wonderful creatures. I also couldn't help but notice that Nene looks to be having much more difficulty getting around, poor old girl.
Well she can still climb up high so hopefully that is a good sign. I know her slowly getting around is the issue these days, but she still is capable of sprinting, usually at Shabani or Annie.

Those up/down doors are sooo scary. After I read about a baby gorilla who was killed due to this type of door, these doors became a horror to watch go down. Love this Family.
What do they do in the wild, but sit with each other, interacting within their troop, and forage for something to eat. But they also have threats, which keeps them on the move around their territory. These guys don’t have any of those threats. For such intelligent, loyal beings, watching their members getting killed can leave them scared for life. Poachers….etc. it sounds as if Nene might be the only one who experienced the wild, and only for a short time, as she was a toddler when Captured.
He rocks until he’s beating up on Nene or one of the others. I’m trying to find out if anyone knows if that bullying has a purpose, like practice at fighting in case an outsider attacks or something…

I suspect Ai knows Annie is her daughter. She was just rather young when she had Annie, and at the time knew very little about mothering a child.
10:10 it's moments like this that make me think Ai knowns Annie is her child. At Annie's age most gorillas who aren't related would not engage with the other gorillas much who aren't related to them.
I wonder if the door is malfunctioning, as it keeps closing/trying to close. I hope a hand of the gorillas won’t be injured if it got caught under the door. At least there was another way to get to Annie in the basement.

@@pamcunningham9608 I mostly see that particular display when they are happy. When they are just in the mood to display. They also always seem energetic when using it. Which makes me suspect it's about being excited and making yourself excited, positively or negatively.
@@evo2542 Yeah, it's a particularly Shabani gesture, pretty much, although it's been adopted by his whole family as well. I suspect you're right about it being kind of a "getting amped up" kind of thing, since Shabani usually seems to do it when he's feeling playful.
They need a big screen tv to watch while they Are inside . Do they have tv at night? I think it would be a great experiment . I’d like to see how they experienced it .

You guys should see the difference between this zoo and the Bronx zoo exhibit……… this looks like a prison in comparison……in the Bronx Zoo…. You are the one behind the glass. Natural environment with a running stream. All trees. No man made objects for them to play with. All natural. Like they are in the wild.
Those doors scare me. I’ve seen them close and little Kintaro run under. A small opening or what just happened with Annie. They need a monitor like an elevator that draws back automatically if it touches something.
I am not sure why the female gorilla is afraid of Shabani. He seems to be in general a very benevolent and kind leader. Sure he "tapped" her in the video we see but it wasn't an aggressive thing. It seemed really playful.
Couple questions these are dim watching for a while. One, is there something different with Nini. She has the strangest looking face. It looks scary. Doesn't resemble any of the other ones. And she's always sitting there with her jaw. Hanging open it just doesn't look the same. Can you usually she's by herself or hiding. And it seems that Shabani doesn't like her I'll be nice. If anybody knows why I love to understand..

At 51, she's probably the oldest gorilla in Japan. (There's only 20 I believe)

I think she knows now as well. Maybe she didn’t when she was introduced to her before the others, but I think she does now.
