  • This is the historic last Civil War Funeral of Confederate Lt Andrew Jackson Buttram. This is part II of a 2 part series. The Soldier's Body Recovered in Yard is believed to be the last confederate lost in battle. This is about the recovery of Lt. Andrew Jackson Buttram, CSA, from the American Civil War. The battle/skirmish happened in Munford, Alabama on April 23, 1865, and his body was recovered on February 26, 2020. Some of his family members were present when the body was recovered and the Son's of Confederate Veterans (SCV) Post 454 have been instrumental in working with local officials to have the soldier properly buried with honors. The soldier was buried in uniform and several buttons and his boots were also recovered as well as the round believed to have ended his life. It was determined conclusively that the round ball found in his body was fired from a cannon that could have only come from friendly fire.
    Lt. Andrew Jackson Buttram, The Last Confederate Casualty in the War Between the States:
    In April 1865, the South was just about overrun. Still, brave defenders stood up to the invader and defended their country, their states, and their communities. Lt. Andrew Jackson Buttram, the defender of Munford, was one such man.
    Lt. Buttram and a contingent of 150 citizens, invalids, and home guards faced a battle-hardened Union troops numbering approximately 1500. The defenders didn't have much hope but stand they did! During the short battle, Lt. Buttram and two Union soldiers lost their lives. It is not known how many were wounded. After the war, the Union soldiers were disinterred and carried home. Lt. Buttram remained in his wartime grave.
    The Town of Munford and the Samuel C. Kelly SCV Camp 454, worked together to finally give Lt. Buttram the funeral he deserves.
    The University of Alabama Archaeology Department disinterred Lt. Buttram from his unmarked grave and he was given a full Confederate Military Funeral when he is reburied at the foot of the monument honoring his sacrifice. His services were held on June 27, 2020, in Munford, AL. #historyseekers #history #civilwar

    My ancestors fought out of Gaston County, North Carolina. It honors them that there are still people who respect the history of what they fought and died for. The Sons of Confederate Veterans,and all who helped, did an amazing job with this beautiful service. Such an privilege to attend, even if it’s only You Tube, my heart is touched and my eyes are crying. Thank you, Lt. Andrew Jackson Buttram, for your service. We cherish your sacrifice.

    Our re-enacting unit 1st N.C. Artillery had the honor to help re-bury Pvt. Biggs from Bailey N.C. Pvt. Biggs grave was found when a home owner near Fort Fisher North Carolina was cutting his grass and discovered the grave. Pvt. Biggs served North Carolina heavy coastal artillery and died during his service. His ever faithful wife never re-married and passed in 1910.
    The Biggs family had the Pvt. buried beside his wife. It was an honor and privilege to be a part of his re-burial service. God bless, all our service personnel and their families for their service and sacrifice.

      @David Tucker That's where stories like Lt. Buttram's and Southern stories are the same as "Union" stories and the northern ones. People living in the north and south descend from American Revolution Patriots. We will all fight to preserve America.

    • @MercurialMorpheus
      @MercurialMorpheus 4 года назад

      @David Tucker To speak highly of both the founders and the people that fought the revolution AND the traitors, either forced or voluntary, that tried to destroy their very creation is a perplexing oxymoron to say the least. Nothing about the Confederacy honors the founders and any true American patriot in any way.

    • @MercurialMorpheus
      @MercurialMorpheus 4 года назад +1

      @David Tucker That's a delightfully oversimplistic and erroneous view of American history you have there . And none of it changes the fact that the Confederacy started the war, over slavery, at the goal of rendering this country asunder. And yes, Washington was a traitor, TO BRITAIN. Confederates were traitors TO THE UNITED STATES. So again, to be pro founders and pro traitors of this country is highly amusing.

    As a former soldier and veteran I would have thought that he would have received a proper US Army funeral with full military honors. As a southerner I understand the thoughts of men wearing CSA uniforms. But a Rebel Battle Flag. He as in all but two members of the CSA were given back US citizenship. Again I would have expected him to have received a full military honor funeral. Was this a decision of his family. Or a historical society?

    • @kellyhistoryseekers3090
      @kellyhistoryseekers3090 4 года назад +4

      The Sons of Confederate Veterans were in charge of the funeral. The family worked with them.
      For clarification, Lt. Buttram was killed in action as a Confederate soldier. He died fighting for that flag and against the flag of the Union. The funeral in the video is accurate to the funeral befitting a soldier killed in action in 1865, fighting for the Confederate cause.

    Imagine the family of fallen Nazi soldiers holding services in like, celebrating their fallen soldiers, carrying symbols and emblems of the dead and humiliated Nazi Germany all in the name of history and love of nation.
    This is the most unpatriotic thing ever. Celebrate the man as a human being, not as the soldier of a humiliated South, that fought and lost for a humiliating cause. This is ridiculous.

    • @kellyhistoryseekers3090

      The thing about living in America is you are entitled to your opinion. We recorded the history of the day with no politics involved. Over 200 of his descendants were there to celebrate his life.
      The Sons of the Confederacy and his family gave him a funeral under the flag he fought and died under. Once again, your opinion stands and you are entitled to it. Opinions are like, well you know. Everyone has one. Ridiculous.

    • @HistorySeekers
      @HistorySeekers  4 года назад +6

      You should read your history and stop listening to people using it for politics today.
      Consider 93% of the soldiers of the south NEVER owned slaves. They fought because many were made to by rich rulers just as the soldiers from the north.
      Some were there to defend from their communities from what they saw as invaders. From our research it appears this man also never owned a slave.
      Kelly’s family all fought for the union and mine for the confederacy. We recognize that most soldiers only fought because they had no choice on BOTH sides.
      Unfortunately these brainwashed ANTIFA kids have not bothered to look into the fact most wars are fought because of rich elites on either side. The average soldier is just there because if he doesn’t he would be hung.

    • @MercurialMorpheus
      @MercurialMorpheus 4 года назад +1

      @@HistorySeekers From that pov, it is even more disrespectful to bury him in the uniform and flag of a country that forced him to go to war with his previous countrymen, is it not? Though not owning slaves doesn't absolve him of fighting against his country. Many southerners opposed the Confederacy and succession, for the same reason of "defending their homes". It's still a choice. And if you wish to view him as an AMERICAN soldier, even more reason to dispense with the Confederate trappings. Honor the man, not the Confederacy that destroyed his future.

      Funny that people still think the party of Lincoln and the party of Trump are somehow the same party. Funny how a channel with "history" in its name isn't aware the two parties effectively realigned in the 60s when the south objected to the civil rights movement. Funny this is even being discussed when political affiliation isn't relevant nor brought up until now.
