    I liked B. It had a timbre that would fit in my collection. I am really a big fan of SYOS. I have 4 tenors
    and 1 soprano.

    I have played my tenor for about three years now and I am still using the basic Yamaha that came with my tenor... I really want one of these Syos mouthpieces and I have been mowing lawns for the past few months so I can finally afford to get one.. I cannot even elaborate on how many times I have watched this video to chose which one I like, it’s so hard!

    BTW, your sound is “built in” to you. That’s why you send more or less the same on various mouthpieces. The trick is finding the mpc that makes getting your sound the Easiest! There are extremes, eg. a classical or screaming R&R piece, but anything in the regular range will be judged by how easy it is for you personally.

    Last one (Daro) is super powerful and with a lot of sizzle on both high amd low register. Dayna’s is good too, but with less sizzle on the bottom. Very nice!

I play on Selmer Soloist C*. For about 3 years I did play on it and it's very nice, it has a sweet tone, very nice but I think that, I would switch to the Leland Whitty mouthpiece if I would won it. After a couple of extra listens, I am going for mouthpiece C. I’ll be interested to know whether it’s the blue one which I picked out previously ....... or not! It’s dark and sleazy with a thick rich harmonic Centre, but it also has a kick at the top which gives it a bit of edge.

    • @SaxCasts
      @SaxCasts  5 лет назад

      That's very interesting Carole, spoilers found at the bottom of the description box! The next review I'll do longer samples, I kept them short as a lot of people seem to skip to the next video very quickly!

  • @matthiasdruwe7754
    @matthiasdruwe7754 5 лет назад +2

    This is extremely hard to pick one. In my opinion they all sound great. But when I need to pick one I think I choose mouthpiece C. It sounds relatively bright but also has some kind of darkness in it (difficult to explain) but I like it. Also somehow it made me think like the sound of some good old saxophonists like Sonny Rollins and Coltrane (which I love a lot).

    • @SaxCasts
      @SaxCasts  5 лет назад +1

      I'm absolutely with you Matthias. Each time I listen back I pick a different one :/ I can't seem to tell a great deal between them either. I sometimes feel that a few have a smoother sound and I sometimes prefer this and sometimes prefer the others. The control and ease of sound production is so similar between all of them that this wasn't a decisive factor for me either. If it were, I'd have done a power/control/intonation test too. They were all solid choices for my sax playing which made the choice even harder! The solution is to save up and buy 4 I guess :'D Thanks so much for commenting, really appreciate it.

    • @matthiasdruwe7754
      @matthiasdruwe7754 5 лет назад

      I still keep listening and every time I choose an other one (even mouthpiece B which seems not really popular). I was actually thinking you let us choose a mouthpiece based on your playing, but that's what we prefer for you. Chances are big that we don't get the same sound out of the mouthpiece as you and we possibly "win" the wrong mouthpiece. I know syos uses ratings for power and darkness vs brightness. Does this means that a mouthpiece with a high brightness and power always sounds bright and powerful independent from who plays is.
      Buying/trying a syos mouthpiece is already a long time on my wishlist but never dared to order one because I don't know about the plastics and how they will behave. Today I saw a lot of reviews and now I don't dare to order one because it looks so difficult to choose one. And sure I don't have the budget to get 4. 😅

    Some with Syos mouthpieces have said that they fail a pop test. Syos have got back to them stating that this is normal. Do all four of these mouthpieces pass a pop test for you?

    • @SaxCasts
      @SaxCasts  5 лет назад

      I can't get any of them to pop Paul. I have tried a few different reeds. The table of the pieces seems quite wide, perhaps this is the issue. They do play very nicely though. Perhaps the pop test isn't as necessary as we think.

    • @paulrichmond6867
      @paulrichmond6867 5 лет назад

      @@SaxCasts, thank you very much for the reply! For thirty years I have used the Pop test to not only determine if the reed and ligature are set up properly on the mouthpiece, but also to help select a good mouthpiece from a bunch. No one in my current sphere has a SYOS mouthpiece, so I have been going on other's comments. I have seen a couple of player's comment that they could not get the SYOS mouthpiece to pop, yet the SYOS mouthpiece played extremely well - in fact, better than several mouthpieces that had been custom made or refaced by one of the best. I am keen on ordering a SYOS Tenor mouthpiece but held back when I heard of their pop test fails. Perhaps its time for an old dog to learn new tricks!!
      I did notice on your playing tests that you played wonderfully regardless of the mouthpiece. I also noticed that like other wonderful players, they sound very similar when they play differing mouthpieces. Putting aside the tip opening, each of those SYOS mouthpieces differs greatly in their specs - for example, chamber & baffle. Would you say that you found producing your own sound easier on some of the mouthpieces than on others? On the one you found best suited to you, did it turn out to have similar elements, such as chamber size and baffle, to your current mouthpiece?
      thanks again, Paul

    A very interesting video for sure. Unless one happens to be something of acoustic wizard there does not seem to be an appreciable difference in sound between the mouthpieces. I am not a professional saxophonist and have picked up the instrument due to my fifty odd years refurbishing saxophones , clarinets, flutes and oboes- The only difference I have ever been able to detect is that obtained between a vintage Conn Eagle high impedance mouthpiece and a modern very low impedance metal piece. About the SYOS pieces all the notes have an attractive edge except one single note, I think it is low C. How is this possible unless you have deliberately made that note edge free. I’m totally hooked on learning these incredible instruments and am practicing every day since I took early semi retirement.
