It's not a traditional metroidvania where you can just go where ever you want, but there is quite a bit of backtracking. It is also more Sekiro than Souls, because there is a heavy emphasis of precise parrying.
It is more like MegaMan Zero with a hub world that unlocks as you progress required areas. Aside from the saves that reload enemies it is nothing like a souls game. If you are familiar with games that have parry apart of its combat system like Sifu, then go for it
This was the fight that really solidified this game as GOTY for me, hitting perfect parries on all those knives felt so satisfying

I don’t think nine sols is a metroidvania (its too linear for that). Its still a good Game that you should try tho.
