What a savior you are. I just took mine apart today. I was trying to see if the Kombi hedge trimmer would work. I don't think it will. I went ahead and took it all apart and gave it a good cleaning. The trimmer has been setting for about 2 yrs with 100% gas in it. I didn't think it would start but it took right off on the 2nd pull. I was having trouble with the trigger installation but after watching your video, I think I can get it back together. Thanks again.

Update on my latest chainsaw cleaning protocol. Exterior with power washer, then disassemble, Super Clean and scrub with parts washer brush and toothbrush, rinse using garden hose with sprayer attachment, then finish up with compressed air. No harsh chemicals, no fuel/oil mix. So far, so good! 👍🔧🧰

You clean a chainsaw with compressed air, carb cleaner and paper towels. A pressure washer, really?
Mike Spain Absolutely, for the first, exterior stage! Pretty soon I’ll be doing equipment cleaning in batches so I only have to set up and break down the pressure washer once for every few machines. Yesterday I got delivered to me a batch of 3 chainsaws, 3 string trimmers and 1 hedge trimmer - all free and all filthy - that had been sitting in a basement for years. Pressure washing will cut the time down by at least 20 minutes on each piece and then I’ve got much cleaner equipment to start working on. In the case of large pieces like generators, lawnmowers, lawn tractors and snowblowers the time savings are MUCH better and I’ve got a yard full of them to work on as well. I also have an ultrasonic cleaner for carbs, etc. I’ve used carb cleaner, brake clean and gas/oil mix before. Not a fan of breathing in the fumes. Super Clean works just as well with no harmful fumes, etc.
I would like to offer one important tip. When reassembling plastic parts, NEVER start the screws with a power tool! Put the screw in the hole and with a hand tool apply firm pressure and turn the screw BACKWARDS until you feel it drop into the previously cut threads. Make a couple of turns until the screw is fully engaged. Then you can run it most of the way down with a power tool. Tighten by hand and don’t over tighten. Failure to do this can result in the steel screw cutting new threads into the soft plastic. This rips out the original threads and leaves you with a stripped hole that you have to attempt to repair. 30 plus years of working on auto plastic dashboards and 10 years repairing copiers and printers has taught me valuable lessons about plastics. A trick for removing stuck Phillips head screws that have rounded out is to use a pair of diagonal pliers (wire cutters) with the handle in line with the screw. Firmly grip the head of the screw and twist.

Classic "Do as I say, not as I do" moment. :) Even so, it's a true testament to only using ethanol-free. Unfortunately it's not available to everyone here in the states.

Being along Lake St Clair, the boating capital of the US, many stations sell ethanol-free recreational fuel. However, after gumming up my own FS 45, I replaced the carb and use premixed 50:1fuel in my two-cycle equipment and Rec gas in my 4-cycle equipment. No carb issues since the switches.

I had an FS38, and did replace the trigger at one point. That trimmer was a real pos!

A large issue is the exhaust screen blocking with carbon, easily cleaned buy burning off the carbon build up. 15mm Socket

Hey bro great video👍👍. In my opinion this was a simple repair that anyone could do for themselves. Everything you do first you just have to do in reverse while mounting back any piece of equipment.

I work at a hardware store that is a Stihl dealer and they recommend their tools to use a 50:1 fuel ratio. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know whether or not 40:1 would be harmful to the engine but I just thought I'd drop this info in a comment.
Nope, 40:1 being used in a 50:1 engine isn't harmful at all, You just have to examine the spark arrestor screen more often, and most people never do. I never realized it, but the difference in the amount of OIL between 50 and 40:1, is a tiny amount. Besides, if you use what they recommend, 50:1, it's meant last X amount of time And to run at 40:1, just means it's going to get last a little bit longer. They just want you to buy their stuff every few years, not every decade.

I also noticed the trigger assembly on the cheaper stihl's does appear to be pretty fragile.
that was my thought too, It would be interesting to just buy one, and see how it stacks up to the OEM one.
Yes, it is cheaply made. I was setting the trigger back into the notches and 1 little plastic peg broke and now I'm at a loss on what to do. Is it fixable or must I replace the whole bottom shroud? 😢
Which one is better? Echo or Stihl. I've used my echo weed eater (pas 225) I love it. But never really used a stihl I've used my granfathers but it was a short time. I just want to hear your opinion.
thanks for the question, I'm going to compare them by price first. In the $200 USD price range I like the echo straight shaft, But for the larger and more powerful trimmers, I like stihl.

just ran into a adjustment limiter problem on a 455 rancher i removed the limiters and its back to normal
where was the limiter located at?
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE on the carburator adjustment screws there was a metal shim causing the screws to bottom out prematurely and after removing them i was able to fuly adjust the carb

So I’ve followed the installation process but on start up my STIHL won’t idle. Somehow the cable is not going fullback to the idle extension and for the life of me I can’t see what I’ve done wrong. Any suggestions? My unit is an FS 55 but the identical trigger set up
sure, look at where the cable wraps around a half arc piece of plastic and see if it's not on it.
Show a video of you converting that into a straight shaft

On an item like that my first consideration given the price is similar is which one can I get quickly which one is in stock which one can I have in the next two or three days versus which one is the cheapest
that makes sense.
I don't understand how the safety lever works and how it connects to the trigger , nothing in the video shows how to reconnect the two once a new trigger is installed. Is the lever even needed?

I would have sprayed some Amsoil silicone spray on that trigger before replacing the cover.
Wish I had seen this video a year ago before I removed all the trigger safeties as it was bear to reassemble.
I think I might have done the same thing years ago as well and yes it was pain to deal with.
The notches the trigger sets in, 1 broke, anything on how to fix it or do I have to replace the bottom plastic shroud?
unfortunately my best advice would be to replace the broken piece. However I don't ever use the notches since I hold the trigger to start it.

My existing trigger didn't have that spring in the housing. It appears to rely on the carb spring to reset.

What would you do if you realized that the clips holding the trigger in are broken? Try to find a new lower plastic cover?
for a customer yes, for my own, I'd redneck it. Plastic welding, or using some super glue and baking soda
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Ohh ok thanks. The two on the engine side are super weak. Long story short picked up a fs38 today that wasn't running. Accidently dropped it moving it, I believe that's what ruined the clips. Couldn't figure out how to get the trigger spring back in (watched your video) then realized the clips were broken. It was free so I'm going to wait until another fs38 becomes available or find parts for cheap.

How do you clean dirt and grease off things like this? Ive had yard equipment that is entirely covered in the stuff.
It depends on how bad it is, But I use either an orange based cleaner, old gasoline, or a store bought degreaser.

Just worked on one. Had to do some cleaning in the kill switch connections.
Now the safety lever does not engage. It does not affect the trigger working and the weedeater running.
Why at do you think happened to the safety lever?
Piece break off that the shaft hits to raise it?
Not locked in somewhere?
I hate to say it, But I'd have to see it in person to figure out why.

I watched another video snd noticed it is supposed to have a spring on the safety lever. This one does not have the spring. I thought the shaft had pushed it up. I don’t know what happened to it. The lever was up before I dissembled to clean the switch connection. I don’t remember seeing one when I removed the lever to see if maybe I had reinstalled something wrong.

Evidently I also need the spring that goes in the trimmer head, so U cam bump it to let the line out. It does not have one. I have to pull line out by hand after working the head.

Think I can remove a spring from a Fs45 Stihl and use it in the Echo? May very well be basically the same heads with a few different parts for installing. I would think the heads are very possibly the same.
Even, if they are not, I wouldn’t think that spring would have to be the exact same.
do you think you can make a void on how to retap a cylinder head on a mower and how to put new self propelled cables in i have a .masport president 6000 and can get parts but don't know how to fix if thanks

5:06 having same problem plus one of the clips is broken on bottom of throttle bracket
that'll make it a bit more challenging

I'd get OEM and that way if it died I could go back to the dealer and see what was what. I've got a 440 magnum and went back up with an OEM top end. $350+. Blessings!

Come to think of it, it was the safety lever I replaced.
