      Others guys in this era not better than some other guys in the 80s. It depends on how team is built to really say the others is better or worse. When most people say guys in this era is better its just based off athletic ability and not skill.

    I usually disagree with Gil on alot but he's was definitely right about MJ/Hakeem being more 90s players than 80s...and yesss somebody said it, Hakeem was in his prime versus a young Shaq and he still put in work even tho they lost....

      Exactly, look at MJ's Stat sheet and notice that his best stats are in the 80s. By 1989, MJ was in his prime. The Bulls just weren't in their prime in the 80, because they got sonned by the Pistons and Celtics.

We all know Magic and Bird can walk in today (in their prime) and dominate. Especially since their games weren’t built around athleticism.     I don't always agree with everything Gil says, but I always know that he's saying what he really thinks, and it's almost always fun to think about. And I tend to trust him on who was acting up, when, and how. I think if anyone's an expert it's him.

      @@the_dark_knight5140nahhhhh. I disagree. Their defense is overrated. They never say how good the defense was as whole, only that it was physical. They would foul when the offensive player broke past them and the game allowed it. You keep their athleticism in todays game and only a handful would make it. I feel more confident in saying todays nba players has the talent to be on a team in the 80s. I can’t say the same for the 80s to now. That’s 40 years the game has changed. Imagine any big back then trying to guard a center/ power forward from today.

    I keep hearing this whole “todays player” skill argument. Yet there is footage of Dominique Wilkins doing the euro step in the 80s. But the refs called it a travel. There’s footage of Isaiah Thomas dribbling the ball with 1!! finger. There’s footage of bill Russell jumping over a man clean in a game(same thing Vince Carter and lebron did).

      @@mjgould1192 my point being 1) players back then obviously could do it physically 2) the rules didn’t allow them to. So maybe it’s not the players but the rules. Especially freedom of movement, hand/ball placement while dribbling, unlimited step back(James harden). Imo it’s not that the players have gotten better it’s more so the rules have gotten looser and the iq of the game has mostly left.

Magic said and I quote “it was the greatest basketball move” he ever saw. It would be a normal reverse today but was spectacular back then. They weren’t capable. Players today shoot from half court. Shooting improved tremendously and so did dribbling.

      *Jokic solidified himself as one of the best Centers ever don’t bring Laimbeer up with Jokic. If Laimbeer was a 3rd round pick then the chances of him making the NBA in the 2000s would be slim.       Jokic isn't one of the best centers ever. He's dominant on the offensive side of the ball, but offers nothing on the defensive end. Jokic's defensive ineptness is covered up by the fact that zone defense is played in today's game, if he played in the 80's, he'd get exposed.

      Firstly, don't name call, I didn't disrespect you, so give me the same courtesy. Secondly, winning an MVP doesn't solidify a person as being one the elite players to ever play their position. Steve Nash won two MVPs, but when you talk about the greatest point guards of all- time, no one mentions his name. Jokic is lucky enough to play in an era, with zone defense. If he had to play man to man defense, against elite post players in the 80's like Kareem, Hakeem, Ewing, McHale, etc., he'd have problems.

      @@bhavikification Gilbert was a PG his whole career. He had a fantastic but short prime, but injuries ruined his career to the point he was unplayable and amnestied/cut instead of playing him. Bill Laimbeer was a better player and had a better career than Gilbert Arenas. Gil does not have the resume to back up the Laimbeer slander, Laimbeer was even a better shooter than Gil lmao.

      @@bhavikification Gil had 3-4 good years in his career. Bill was a double double elite defender majority of his career. He had no chance to win all NBA since the league had Hakeem, Kareem, Shaq, Moses Malone, Ewing, Robinson, etc fighting for those TWO spots (Third team did not come out until 88-89, which was AFTER Bill's all star seasons). Gilbert has one NBA second team, and two third team awards. Bill has 4 all stars to Gil's three. Bill wasn't a scorer like Gil, it wasn't his job, but he still ended his career with more points scored than Gil lol

    Anyone that thinks the 80s or 90s was easy doesn't need to talk basketball. The 80s and 90s was the toughest Era to win. 80 was dominated by 2 teams, Celtics and Lakers. Todays NBA is more Hype, players are alllowed to travel just so they can jack up 3s These same players lose in Olympic Basketball to countries that might have 5 NBA players😂😂😂

    Bill Laimbeer shoots 3s and is one of the original stretch 5s. He is a good midrange shooter, plus a decent passer and 6ft11. He be good in this era even without offense.

      The issue with tryin to bring players from back then to today is the game has evolved drastically the skill level is too advanced..it’s a different sport now, u can’t plug these guys in immediately & they make an impact..u could only do that with a select few & even then they would need to adjust..the rest would need months in the gym to actually recondition their bodies & adapt to the skill gap by restructuring there games to mesh with the modern era, whether people want to admit it or not

      @@Mr10before9 the game has evolved drastically that’s not true..watch tape from previous eras & compare it to now it’s not only rule changes..it’s different training regimens, creativity, the game expanding internationally, the eye test drastically changing in the last 30-35 years..look at what Gil said back then they picked anyone, now u only draft 60 players a year and over a quarter of the players either get sent down to the G League or are out the league in a couple of years, proof is literally in our faces people jus can’t accept it

Teams are more focused on getting guards and wing men, that they forget the center is still a valuable position. To get dominated by someone who can barely jump, doesn't run fast, and most of the time, looks like he throws the ball up there and hopes it goes in, that should be an embarrament to everyone else out there

      Im going to be brutally honest. Take some of the worst players today and drop them in the 80’s and their at least all stars. That’s the truth. That’s not a problem though, that’s the natural progression of any sport and it’s gonna continue like that for as long as sports exist or till humans max out their physical potential. Which I think sports would probably cease to exist first because science is full of surprises. The players of back then wouldn’t even be able to keep up with modern players practices and drills much less in an actual game.

    It’s funny that he picked Laimbeer because he’s a guy that still WOULD have made the league, even if it was only 2 rounds. Would’ve made it as an undrafted player. You just saw a team with 4 undrafted players make the Finals in todays game. Bill could shoot, had a high motor, and an extremely high basketball IQ. There’s a reason he was a winner. Carried over to coaching too, leading multiple teams to WNBA titles.     They just have to realize if those people grew up today they would all be playing different. It’s dumb to compare the eras because everything even the training is different. The amount of kids that grow up playing and parents that can afford to take them to camps has increased so more people means there will likely be a higher pool of great players.

    One thing he doesn´t consider is that in the 80ies most players played 4 years of college, some went to tne draft after 3 years. So a lot of the players were hitting their prime within their first 2-3 NBA seasons already. If you look at the 85 and the 86 draft there are a lot of players that still hid their peak or had their best season in the 80ies and they already started to fall of during the mid 90ies, so according to him they count as 90ies players while numbers wise they were pretty much on the same level or even better during the 80ies.

      @@DividendDisciple He states at the beginning of the videos that he does consider players drafted in 85 or 86 as 90ies players anyhow, since he focuses on their peak. that makes sense in today´s NBA where most rookies are 19 and 20, but not in the 80ies where the majority of players came to the league as 22 or 23 year olds and often were already declining in their early 30ies due to less advanced medical treatment.

    Mychael Thompson (Klay’s dad) and Byron Scott put up near identical numbers if not better than Gil for their entire career. And they were bench players behind James Worthy, Magic and Kareem. Gil is many things, but he’s not objective. There are many players from that era who would be dominant today. There is no Dominique Wilkins or Charles Barkley, or Isiah Thomas in today’s NBA.

    I love the 80s and early 90s basketball, there was a lot more improvisation and showtime. Magic, Bird, Kareem, MJ, Thomas, Olajuwon, Barkley, Ewin, Wilkins.... best basketball I have ever seen. After it became a lot more athletic and powerful but I feel the imagination of the players was far less entertaining, with the exception of AI.

      You saw the pinnacle of athleticism and coaching schemes. The 3-point line changed a lot of the strategy also. If they added a 4-point line and didn't allow zone defense, it could bring back the dynamic of the lane being clear for an excellent slasher, against a rim protector and while still not as good as yesteryear, could still be enjoyable, if politics and crooked refs don't ruin it further.

We seen so many dunks the league need to do one dunk contest where they take the top 3 dunkers from each team for like a dunk contest competition distance, flash and whatever the 3rd be and if 10 of these guys dunking from the line or more I don't wanna hear how a league where the g.o.a t and like 1 other could do it is better.

    No one also remembers that the league had tons of expansion when Jordan came into his prime and dominated old and tired teams? So you had expansion teams watering down the league, and all the best teams were teams holding on to their core like it was everything to contend for titles while they're exiting their primes. Competition was easiest in the 90's. It got really difficult post 2005.

    Just to be clear I agree with gil and I was born in the early 80s. I Think people confuse the great storylines that david stern marketed for the whole league being great.Only thing about today's game for me is the lack of physicality. I dont want to see late 90s ball but just want players be able to compete without tik tak fouls called and less flopping. Guys overall now are more skilled but I see two glaring weakness that the Joker and Curry exploit. Most big players cannot actually score with touch around the rim and can't take advantage of smaller players. And most player cannot play without the ball which actually hurts the offense those are two great skills I would like to to see come back. Because if these players in this era could bring that back along with how they play the game would be more watchable to me.
