  • Released at Hackerence 1992 demo party. Ranked 1st place.
Captured from 386DX-40 / TSENG ET4000 / Terratec EWS64S (used as SB Pro)
    Original 70 fps video:
    retronn.de/ftp/videos/dos_crys...
    REQUIREMENTS
This demo requires a 12 MHz 286 with VGA graphics, but we recommend at least
a fast 386 computer. You'll need about 550 kb free memory. If you have a
386 or 486, make sure that there's no EMM386/QEMM386 driver or something
like that installed, because these programs slow down your computer while
    playing music.
It supports SoundBlaster, SoundBlaster Pro (Stereo), parallell port D/A
converter (Mono and Stereo) and internal speaker for the music. If you don't
have a SoundBlaster card, we recommend you to build a D/A converter. The
internal speaker has VERY poor sound quality.
Howewer, you should be entertained by this demo when it is running on a true
486 computer with a real stereo D/A converter or a SoundBlaster Pro card
connected, in a dark room with a cold cc in your left hand (Why left?
[because it's red of course!]) and your bottom pressed into your most
comfortable chair. We hope it will amuse you even though it's only 16 colors
at the screen, but sometimes that might be an advantage.

It was an exciting time for computers when visual effects had an impact on people because, back then, real-time visuals needed a lot of trickery around hardware limitations. In other words, demo coders had challenges breaking the barriers.
Fun fact: the start screen here, with the direct comparison of 386 and 486, gave me even more thrills than the demo itself. I owned a 486 DX 2/66 and later upgraded to a 486 DX 3/100. I have fond memories of these two machines and was incredibly proud to have owned a 486 DX/2 when DOOM came out and had a significant edge over my 386 friends. 😁

Remember kids, this is before GPUs and DirectX. All the hidden-surface removal, transparency calculation, and shading were done by discrete programming, in less than 600Kb of code.

What's "discrete programming", and what other types of programming are there?

This brings back memories. Used to run this over and over again to admire the awesome soundtrack and to admire what was possible on my PC (I think I ran this on my 486dx4 with a soundblaster pro?). Thanks for sharing

Love the music and the demo. RUclips doesn't do justice to this awesome demo, had to download the linked video to see the (almost) full experience. I'm sure nothing beats playing the original demo on the original hardware.

If someone has no soundblaster sound or sound on a sound blaster is really distorted: You either have a clone or a later soundblaster - use one up to the Pro! The routines of this demo use a hack to feed the music to the sound blaster. Their routine calculated sample by sample, since it was optimized for LPT DAC or PC speaker out. What they did was to feed the SB with one sample and reset its internal counter back to zero, and then do that again when the timer comes for the next sample. This was no "official" way to run the SB, and hence it really required a 100% compatible card. E.g. on an SB 16 the sound is distorted, clones may not play at all.

bleh. when I pick sound blaster, there's no sound. Internal option works but the sound is very distorted

The Sound Blaster initialization routines are somewhat bugged, and won't work on faster machines (like a 486-33 or faster). I created a fix for that.
