Del Album: Come Out Fighting (1988) by Greg X Volz

I know we have to becareful to not put people on a pedestal...but this dude was EASILY one of the best rock singers out of any secular singing guy and everybody else in between... this guy just " Had it"
I love it already. I was 14 when I heard of Petra. The rest is history 😃
He's still got that beautiful badass voice 🤩
Greg is one of maybe five guys on the planet who can really pull of Dream On. I saw him do it live with his band Pieces of Eight at Atlanta Fest 1988
and it was nothing short of amazing. It basically put the whole crowd on their knees.
Greg can hit those notes without even thinking about it. True talent.
Amen
Unlimited range...I played bass on one of his solo projects in the early 90's...great singer and a great guy.
Amazing cover. This should have millions of views and likes, a hidden treasure indeed, we are lucky.
This is better than the original. Greg X Volz has an amazing voice and is such a good artist.
The best lead man for Petra ever. Petra, my favorite rock band of all time. Nothing brings to mind my conviction like the lyrics of Petra songs!
How are you convicted by an Aerosmith song?? Not that you aren't but I'd like to know how......
“Petra songs” not this song. Perhaps if you read my comment.
@@infernl So then you are saying you don't get convicted when a Christian performer doesn't sing their "own" songs.........
@@kdeh21803 Nope. This isn’t a Christian song based on scripture.
@@infernl That is exactly what I've been saying..... A Christian performer does not need to be doing a Stephen Tyler song...... the lifestyle of Tyler is well known, and should not be part of the repertoire of a godly man.
I like both the Aerosmith and Greg X Volz versions of this song. I was a small child when Aerosmith did it and was 18 when this album came out, so this is the version I think of first. Both were very well done, but I'm partial to Greg from his Petra days to his solo albums.
This rather puts the original to shame. Whenever I hear the Aerosmith version, I feel embarrassed for poor Steven Tyler straining to hit those high notes. Greg Volz hits them cleanly and with power to spare. Even more amazingly, Volz has taken great care of his voice and is still a killer vocalist over 20-years later. Check out his recent work on Classic Petra's "Back to the Rock" album. He sounds as good ever.
Not that much, bro
nah. You just have a thing for volz
Bwahahahahahaha!!!!
Big fan of Greg, "It is Finished" "Godpleaser" and so many other hits are amazing... but no way did he do this song anywhere near as well as Steven Tyler, and honestly the "band" sounds horrible like sequenced music.

Volz is phenomenal. One of the best singers ever. Tyler is pathetic. Try actually listening to each voice.
We all love you Greg. Thank you for being there for us.
Such a clean sound. I think he could effortlessly hit high notes even when you see his live tape.. amazing range.. awkward moment when he sounded higher than the electric guitar lol
Whether this is better then the Aerosmith original is irrelevant. This is a great cover and opens up possibilities for other people to cover this great song as well.
this is one of the greatest covers I've ever heard, the version of Dio & Malmsteen is also great, both are good in their own way. Volz should have better promotion because his voice is poweful
He is amazing. I produced Petra in Portland many years ago. If anyone else does this song, it sounds like they're working at it. He seems to hit those high parts effortlessly. I'm not criticizing. It's just that he's amazing.
This Is A Way Better Version!
Greg's version is still the best ever. I just listened to Dio's cover which is also better than the original but it's still not quite as good as Greg's. Greg's voice is just unreal. He nails the notes the best of anyone.
This is by far the best performance of this song ever (other than the one done on the Glee show recently). But I think this one trumps that even. Greg's vocals are unreal. So much better than the original by Steven Tyler (and I'm an Aerosmith fan). Awesome awesome awesome. Doesn't get better than this!
Greg X. Volz. We miss you!!!!
Cette chanson est ma sonnerie mobile. 😁
Best version of them all
Too many people comparing it with Aerosmith on here. Without the Aerosmith version there would be no version by Greg or anyone else. With that being said, Greg's voice tops Steven Tyler's any day! Greg hit those high notes effortlessly.
I heard his long before I heard the "orginal". i still think of Greg's as being the real deal.
The first version I heard of this song was Greg's. Someone told me a couple of years ago that it wasn't the original. I couldn't believe it! He really manages to make this song his own. I still love the original too though :-) Thanks for posting!
The best
Epic version of this song -- from the amazing vocals to the impressive guitar.
And the arrangement and bass on this are awesome too. Really listen to the bass, even as its fading out.
i had this tape(and wore it out from playin it all the time).i vaguly remember greg covering this song. he does an excellant job at it.
This was really a good version. This album was maybe my favorite actually out of all his solo albums. It's a toss up between this one and no room in the middle.
I heard at a Petra "Beat the System' concert that a member of Petra knew Steve Tyler back in the day. he supposedly helped Steven Tyler write "Dream On".
That's entirely new to me.
I've never heard that and I doubt it's true.
A Nice Version by Greg !
I have always liked your version the best Greg.Shoot, if i ever got put in Wikipedia i think i would feel that i had really made it.Greg you are THERE,congrats to you.Looks like you have made it.
this is awsome
5 octave vocal range awesome
The voice!
i nver knew Greg did a version of this! Cool!
love the version, sounds 80s to me, but still very very cool... love the production and the guitars and ur voice
Never heard this before... this really kicks ass!
No wonder other singers feel intimidated being on stage with Greg. His high notes here put Steven Tyler to shame.
Exceptional
Amazing! I love
Some Kansas members worked with Petra in most of their albums. But not as official band members.
John Elefante and his Brother were producers for some Petra albums starting with Back to the Street I think. I think they also contributed some backing vocals on the studio albums. John Elefante was lead singer for 2 Kansas albums after Steve Walsh initially left. Interestingly those 2 Kansas albums with John had some significantly Christian lyrics, 3 band members of Kansas were Christians by then, but Kansas did not know that John was a Christian when they hired him. They hired him because of his great voice.
Thanks, Petra Fan :)
Where in the world did you get that info? Petra has been around since the 70's and has always been their own band. It is not some supergroup made of other bands, Christian or not.
On as side note, some of the original members of Kansas were Christian and did for their own group, A.D., for a while in the late 80's/ early 90's.
Great AOR cover!
Why is this not on Spotify?
I like
GREG X VOLZ GREAT SINGER. LISTEN TO WHAT THEN SONG
can you consider the meaning of the lyrics christian?
"sing with me, if it's just for today, maybe tomorrow the Good Lord will take you away"...
I like that, but I haven't already finished of analize and understand all the lyrics..., and in adition, I'm not native speaker :) (I'm hispanic)...
Hope you give me some feedback
Our Lord Jesus bless you
or "Never Tomorrow, The God Lord will take you away."
This version adapted words here and there.
como assim , cover do aerosmith? essa música é do aerosmith ou do petra?
Originally aerosmit, greg x volz covered it later but has such a clear tone that he kind of out does the original😊
In some ways Greg's version is better, and in other's Aerosmith's is. They're both unique which is awesome. One thing for sure, no one but Greg could hit those high notes like Steven in the end and sound that good!
Circle Complete. Ronnie James Dio sang on Kerry Livgren's Seeds of Change and later covered this song, too.
I love how these commentors speak of the 80's like we progressed musically since then;Newsflash! We HAVEN'T!!We Pinnacled(is that a word?😁) then!
I love love love Greg X - this is 80's vs 70's and 70's win. This version is like a mashup of Aerosmith and the Rocky IV soundtrack. I remember it being great at the time but now, definitely 80's dated. Aerosmith's version is just so much more authentic.
Huh?
I don't usually like cover songs as much as originals but this version by Greg is so much better than the original that it's not even funny. I find it hard to listen to the original Aerosmith version now. He makes this song his own and completely and totally 1-upped to the original.
Yeah, His name is John Elefante.
What is that stated in reference to?
All I ever saw was comments how John had great range as if he could compare to Greg. SMH
17 people never dream on
copy-paste man.. not enough spirit ?
Steve Tyler's voice is whiny and annoying. Greg had awesome range and a better sounding voice!!
I agree.
all original words. nothing rewritten.
"Never tomorrow, cause the good Lord will take you away" was an alteration.
Just to let all of you know... Petra sang the original. They made it famous, Aerosmith sang it after them.
also KISS covered with slightly different lyrics PETRAS GOD GAVE ROCK N ROLL TO YOU
@@riverratopp69 I believe that song was both written and recorded by the band Argent, of "Hold Your Head Up" fame.
Tell that to the copyright office.
Petra did the same with Argent too. ;)
Lotta ignorant comments here...
There is no shame in not having the range of Greg. Especially since the Aerosmith version of this song is better!
Definitely not!! Gregs is way better
Aerosmith version is a million times better.
Nope..this is way better! Can't stand Tyler's voice.
Tyler's voice gives out too easily. Greg's got an infinitely better voice.
It's always amazing to me that Christian artists have to dabble in the daubachery of someone like Steven Tyler to feel like they are really relevant. No way to paint this song any other way but to exalt the tragic life of someone like Tyler!!
Or maybe it's just a beautiful song and he wanted to sing it???
.....but you cannot distance the song from it's original performer..... a person who has reveled in all sorts of blatant hedonism.
I think Christians can enjoy things made my other humans and sing whatever they want. I don't understand the judgment Christian artists get for enjoying secular things once in a while.
"a person who has reveled in all sorts of blatant hedonism."
So I guess any hymn/song which has been sung by televangelists like Bakker, Swaggart, and of course Todd "Bam Bam" Bentley is off limits?
So those people you mentioned (some I've not heard of) are/were engaged in the kinds of debauchery that Steven Tyler has been in his life?
Ronnie James Dio did the better cover.
this guy is a good singer but he ruined the song he did a horrible job and is a disgrace to steven tyler
his perfect singing couldn't have ruined the song.
Yes, cold with no soul...
