Rem’s attraction towards Subaru seems reasonable. Subaru loving Emilia just seems shallow. It seems like a “love at first sight” kinda thing. A person’s appearance only tells you a little about them. I see appearances as the the bait and the character as the hook. A persons character is important I can’t see a single thing Emilia did to make Subaru fall for her in his first 3 lives. Rem on the other hand...

Dat thumbnail tho. That's the way it should have ended up. It seems like every anime enjoys forcing the viewers to see the protagonist ending up with the bland girl who was first introduced in the show rather than the obvious best girl. Rem is way better than Satella, end of story.
Well, I can give a few reasons Subaru might feel that way. First off teenagers just have their own tastes in crushes and that's just how it is. In the light novels, Subaru had posters of various anime art. Interestingly, the three most prominent characters among his collection were teenage girls with long silver hair, defined hips, and shapely legs. Now maybe there was something about them that appealed to him just as an otaku loves anime, but it could also mean that's his taste in girls. Next, from the perspective of Subaru the first time he met was when Emilia saved him from Dumb, Dumber, and Dumbest. I think that image of her is burned into his memory. Heck, in that loop, for the anime Puck's comment suggested he thought Subaru had a crush on her. Third, an earlier loop kind of made him suspicious of Rem. "Why're you killing me?" "Cuz you smell like shit!" The final thing I might suggest is completely speculative. Satella was the one who brought him to Lagunica and gave him Return by Death. Maybe whatever magic she imparted on him gave him a crush on Satella (Episode 25 suggests she loves him, so maybe she did that so it would be mutual), but Emilia looks the same. Every kind act Emilia does simply reinforces the feeling Subaru has with that seed for feelings planted in by Satella.
