7 Days in PIRATE Waters | Borneo, Malaysia

- Today we are setting out on a 7-day sailing trip through pirate territory. For the past two months, we have been sailing through the Philippines, and as we have approached the southern limits of the country we have debated where we should go next. In essence, we had two routes to choose from. Route 1 was to head west out of the Sulu Sea south towards Jakarta while hugging the western side of Borneo. And route 2 was to head southeast passing through Sulu and Sabah, and onwards to Indonesia. There were a couple of once-in-a-lifetime attractions we would only be able to see if we took route 2 - The critically endangered wild Bornean Orangutans, and Komodo Island - the only natural habitat of the Komodo dragons.
The problem however was how dangerous route 2 could potentially be.
In the southern portion of the Sulu Sea, there is a controversy zone on the border of the Philippines and Malaysia where there has been a history of piracy and crimes carried out by the “Sultans of Sulu”. This Islamist extremist group inhabits the remote Sulu Islands and has gained a scary reputation for its acts of kidnapping, theft, piracy, and killings. In recent years the Malaysian and Filipino governments have put much effort and manpower towards securing the waters, and now there are strict protocols for passing through. As we did more research and started planning our route we realized just how strictly the waters are patrolled and started to open up more to the idea of taking route 2. Interestingly, right as we were about to set sail we noticed that Sailing La vagabonde had just posted a new video about sailing through these exact waters we were about to enter. We watched their video and were surprised to see that they had sailed into the conflict zone without following any of the protocols or precautions. It was rather shocking to see, but the crew and I felt fortunate to get a glimpse of what we may encounter in the coming days. We felt confident knowing that we had taken the proper steps in preparation for the sail, yet there was still a sense of apprehension amongst the crew…

Checking in with government so they could monitor & patrol area is the best plan. Well done on doing your research. If you get a chance to visit Raja Ampat, it is well worth it!!!💙
Abu Sayaff have done hit and run raids and dragged Caucasian Hostages back into the jungles of Mindanao, it happened to a friend of mines resort.

We sure hope so as well.
12:00 malaysia coast guard vessel...
That route are known to be a very dangerous zone especially at night. Desperate people takes desperate measures, that's a way of life. Exposing yourselves to such danger is actually not a wise idea.
Yeah it used to be a dangerous area. We did take app precautions we were told to do, and also told by the government that it was safe. We didn’t take it lightly. But after sailing through, I would feel pretty good about going through again.
After reflecting on everything we did feel safe the entire way.
every boat a potential pirate/terrorist for 7 days- crazy sailing
You can't be too careful. You were sailing in dangerous waters and people have been kidnapped and killed in those waters. It's good that you took precautions ... and you were lucky. Anyone not taking all possible precautions is a fool.
Overdramatized. That area has a lot of patrols because it's close to the Philippines and many have tried to sneak into Sabah illegally.
After passing through the area we would not be worried about going back. But with the stories you hear from some people, you should respect the rules and warnings set by the government. There has been a lot of bad things happening in the area previously, and everyone should do their own research before deciding to go through or not.
@@SailingRippleEffect I'm Malaysian and I'm well aware of what's going on in Sabah.
There's a militant group known as the followers of the Sulu Sultanate in the Philippines who believes that the rightful owner of Sabah belongs to their heirs, even though the heirs cannot be verified as the actual descendants of Sulu and there's an agreement between Sultanate of Sulu and British commercial syndicate which stipulated that North Borneo was ceded in 1878. In 1942, Japan invaded Sabah during WW2 which lasted until 1945 and after the war, the people voted in a referendum overseen by the UN in 1963 to join the Federation of Malaysia. That's the simplified version of the history in Sabah.
This militant group tried to take back Sabah by force in 2013 but was repelled by the Malaysian security forces and killed 32 militants during the mop up. While there were cases of piracy after 2013, threats in Malaysian waters have dwindled significantly after the incident. The Malaysian government have taken steps to mitigate potential threats by beefing up patrols and acquiring more military assets. In this video alone, there were at least 3 patrol boats and 1 Malaysian Coast Guard vessel with more warships and patrol vessels are currently under construction. You can bet that Sabah and Sarawak will be the most militarized waters in Malaysia in the future due to piracy, presence of militant groups in the Philippines and the growing territorial dispute in the South China Sea
i had the feeling this was hyped up for some reason by the government
the military guy said he had never seen a pirate
makes you wonder
what eyes don't see cant be reported ?

It’s hard to know what is really there. We felt safe, but it’s difficult to say what is the real situation 🤷♀️
Nope.. the treat is real. Some resort even guarded by military. On vagabond video, their boat was attended by VAT69, special police forces
@@WanAzihan but la vagabond is all about the drama
so yeh they would go overboard with special forces
it makes content for them to be extra dramatic
stopped watching a while back when they encountered the monkeys
but still kept filming
Honestly a load of drama ---- there is a LOT of patrols from the Philippines police in that specific area ---- been there twice already
