Okay, whoever that was that handled those beautiful shots of getting into the armour plus the horses, and EVERYTHING Will did for the contest? That was just amazing. It felt, Epic and grand. Even Tom struggling to get into the armour and struggling. Just great over all! I felt intimidated just watching Will though in the black and yellow armour through those shots. Well done!
This is incredible on so many levels, everything from the initially lacklustre "huzzar "s (well done Tom you got there) to getting dressed as a knight, which very much felt like a comedic version of LOTR getting ready for the battle of Helms Deep 😂
I have to day, those are some well trained horses. Between the instructor waving the lances in front of the horses, the wind blowing (and presumably whatever smells coming along on the wind), and the whipping about of the flags, nothing seems to be spooking those horses. Having been around horses, I can personally attest those beasts are some nervous, flighty creatures.
Did everyone not see the bit where Tom's horse got spooked and bolted at around 9 minutes in? Starting to think that has been added in after the initial cut. But they are very good horses, I suspect they have to be very well trained to allow the public to learn jousting with.
Horses before: Charged bravely into cannon fire, didn't flinch at pistols being shot next to/on them, and routinely traveled miles in unforgiving weather into battle with their companions. Horses now: Spook at their own farts, can't be ridden if there's a breeze, terrified of water/plastic bags/their own shadow, and will literally chase you across the paddock demanding treats. 🤣
Congrats to the whole team that makes these videos, the sound is always on top and they're very well shot and edited, probably some of the best producing on the platform.

2:15 - XD As someone that helped out at a riding school for about 20 years or so; I give you the classic potato sack riding position. It's weird. Really young kids actually hold their position better, I think after the age of around 6 or 7, humans take on this position. Maybe it's because younger kids are still adapting at a rapid pace. There again, everyone starts somewhere. The washing-line reins are a nice touch also. Not that long reins are always bad. I schooled a horse that a lot of people didn't want to ride (including myself). After a couple of sessions I just realised he struggled under pressure especially with too much contact on his mouth, so, as long as I had a bit of feeling through the reins he'd be happy to go around with his head low. Took a few months working up and down to get him comfy. Had some instructors hate me for allowing him to be comfortable. also, nicely done sitting with the spook. It happens; you get somewhat used to it but it can catch anyone off-guard
Why on Earth would they disapprove of doing what made him comfortable? A good partnership can't happen unless the horse is comfortable and listening. A friend of mine used to ride a horse that had a rather interesting canter that could only be ridden smoothly while sitting at a slight diagonal. If you sat straight, it threw him off and made it super rough. All it took was a tiny seat adjustment and a willingness to work with him. There was an older Olympic Jumper that had a cross-fire canter (I believe it was Touch of Class); The trainer/rider said the horse wouldn't have made it as far as they did if he had tried to fix it. Sure, try and fix the problem if it's a health hazard (i.e. cribbing or rubbing), but otherwise...
A classmate of mine once suggested we do jousting for pe to the teacher, he meant fencing. We nearly organized jousting between badminton nets. This was high school btw and he got it wrong so many times. If I had a dime for every time my school nearly organized jousting, I'd have two dimes. Which isn't a lot, but it's wired it happened twice. The second time was in history, but the teacher had a gladiator fight instead. Homework was the shield and some people tried to get out of it by drawing a shield. All I can say is that it didn't hold up well in battle.
At my primary school, we actually did jousting in PE because our teacher organised a "King Arthur" themed sports day. We "rode" hobby horses and used foam javelins for lances and archery targets for shields.
Tom and Rowan. This was excellent!!! I loved it. Would love to see you on horseback more often. One small hint, though, when you put your feet through the stirrups, only EVER put them through as far as the ball of your foot. Two reasons, firstly, it's much easier to do the rising trot (your ankle will take some of the responsibility for movement from your knees. Your knees and thighs will thank you), and, secondly, if you happen to fall off, you're at a MUCH smaller risk of being dragged behind the horse, because it will allow your foot to slip out of the stirrups. Falling off a horse is not fun (don't ask how I know), but being dragged is much less fun (thankfully I don't know this from personal experience, but I have seen it done, and it didn't look fun). Oh, how I love horseriding. Can't do it anymore (not many wheelchair-accessible horses), but what I wouldn't give to have just one more ride... Thank you for letting us live vicariously through your exploits!
PS: Could we please petition to have Will join the crew? I would love to see the exploits of Tom, Rowan and Will. :) Just casually touring around the country trying things. Sort of a UK version of the Try Guys. :) We could call them Tom's Test Team :D
I learned to ride when I was very young, and watching this makes me realise how hard learning rising trot must be. It's a feel thing and very hard to describe- I felt sorry for Tom saying he couldn't get the timing right, as there's not really a set rythm to it, but moving with the movement and rythm of the horse. Mad respect to them- riding for the first time is very intimidating and difficult, let alone then learning to joust!!!
I liken it to the turn signal on a car; each one is different while still being a 1-2-1-2 rhythm, and once you catch that rhythm, it fades into the background. Of course, I'm 28, and I still post to the turn signal in my car, so... 😂
Of course it's not the point of this video, but I always think it's fascinating to see what gets skipped when the first-time rider is not going to be an ongoing student--a part of my soul will always kick and scream about unfairness when first time riders get put in an actual saddle, WITH stirrups, instead of a pad and having to actually learn to maintain your own balance on the horse...not to mention the complete lack of "if you're going to ride, you have to know how to care for the horse" content. But praise be to Freddie and Toby, nearly bombproof horses as far as this video shows. And the jousting angle was fun.
Right? Those two were absolute CHAMPS. Would love to have a few lessons on either of them. As an aside, I totally agree with you on the riding. I was internally screaming the entire time they were trotting. "Those heels go down, and the feet go UNDER! Make that line! You're not a full body spring, you're a hinge. It's a full body LIFT from the knees and hips! Don't use your butt, push down with the feet and rise!" Did the same when they tossed Markiplier on a horse. XD
What fun. Will really looks the part of a romantic knight. Tom and Rowan make a great double act. Some of the cinematography in this episode nailed the Hollywood Blockbuster aesthetic.

@@vigilantcosmicpenguin8721 I'm looking forward to the video entitled "There's a Pharoah's tomb on Mount Everest, and the only way in is with crochet."
It's so funny that Tom seemed more uncomfortable with the yelling than anything else I've seen on this channel, maybe aside from that time in the cave.
Tom and Rowan need to do more things together. As for Will, I could say a lot of things about him that would not be acceptable in polite society. Needless to say, I want more Will. Yummy.
tom, you are the only person i'm happy to see getting sponsorships, gone from having every sponsor turn away after your show of honesty with VPNs, to now having every video be sponsored i think it's very neat : )
I have a video idea for Tom that he'd probably have a lot of fun with: he should try machining and/or welding. It's always fun to watch someone learn how to do these things, and it'd be especially cool to see Tom do it
So, the trot is a two beat thing, you don't rise with the back you rise with the leg. Usually the outside front leg. So when the outside front leg is out you are up.
Instead of thinking of the rise, just feel the flow, just like riding a bike on bumpy terrain, use your legs to minimize the impact to yourself and the horse. IE, smooth it out.
@@GrimmDelightsDice There are some people that do Western in the UK, but it is still quite rare. I actually think, in many ways, Western is closer to mediaeval riding than modern English is; a longer length of stirrup, reins in one hand, neck reining x

Well done!
I'm most amazed by how patient the horses were with their apprentice riders.
I LOVE the shot of Will just being all majestic, and then going back to the two of them standing all silly in their costumes
To be fair, Will did look absolutely fabulous. Makes it kinda hard to compete.
1:29 "Freddie -- Horse"
No, really? I thought it was"Freddie -- Cockatiel" or "Freddie -- Elephant Shrew"!
😆
love that rowan and tom both have strong colour brands and they were able to joust for that team too!
This is incredible on so many levels, everything from the initially lacklustre "huzzar "s (well done Tom you got there) to getting dressed as a knight, which very much felt like a comedic version of LOTR getting ready for the battle of Helms Deep 😂
Now Tom Scott shall be forever known as Thomas the Uncertain.
Seriously, still laughing at that
These are some some amazingly patient and well trained horses.
I have no idea how often I heard Tom scream "COME ON" on this channel
Thanks for the introduction to Rowan - never come across her before and she's great. Currently making my way through the videos on her channel.
Literally yesterday, horse spooked mid-canter at a patch of grass that apparently looked dodgy
🤣
The swelling music as Tom gets his arm stuck in the clothes was amazing 👏
Congrats to the whole team that makes these videos, the sound is always on top and they're very well shot and edited, probably some of the best producing on the platform.
Tom Scott and Rowan Ellis is the collab I never knew I needed to see
I can't believe Tom's been to so many amazing places and done so many amazing things and he's never ridden a horse before this!
Natural escalation from a bicycle.
Tom Scott plus is just so good, I am always eagerly awaiting whatever comes next!!!
I’m a mounted archer and I’ve had a lesson on Toby! He’s amazing!
He looks it! Do you know what breed and how tall he is? Got a post above here (under the one talking about Brooklyn Supreme) giving a visual on horse heights. I'm guessing 16.2-17hh? :)
@@warriormaiden9829 oh hes maybe 15 ish hands - no more than 16! Cob type :)
@@glitterpuss1 ...seriously? That means that Rowan is only about 5'-5'4" (152-162 cm)! Scott would be, what... 5'9" (175 cm)? 🤣
Nothing will ever beat the rollercoaster video 😂. Poor Tom… he’s like the kid that isn’t naturally good at anything (except making RUclips videos which is a great skill to have in 2022)
Ok I know we're all really enjoying Tom's content, but hear me out: This platform needs a Rowan Ellis Plus channel
Rowan, your nervous commentary ("Toby babes, I don't know if I've got the core strength for this") is just naturally *chef's kiss*
I'm so glad the horses got lower thirds. Really adds to the production quality ❤️
They wouldn't be able to run without their lower thirds.
With the slow motion shots getting ready, I had callbacks to how to make a music video by Tom.
Just casually touring around the country trying things. Sort of a UK version of the Try Guys. :)
We could call them Tom's Test Team :D
I'd love to see a video of Tom just learning how to ride a horse. Maybe get up to a canter or gallop by the end
Or run the Grand National course at Aintree.
I really like the colour coded subtitles!
XD
I've been riding for 24 years and own my own horses, I STILL freak out when a horse bolts underneath me. That moment made me hold my breath haha
Why do I feel as though Tom is in his Blue Peter presenter phase of life. So cool!!
What fun. Will really looks the part of a romantic knight. Tom and Rowan make a great double act.
Some of the cinematography in this episode nailed the Hollywood Blockbuster aesthetic.
Im with Tom, saying that Huzzah would take many a time to commit. But I also know myself well enough that once I was in costume someone would have to ask me to stop! Will seems like he's probably done that hairflip plenty of times
One thing is for certain. You can never guess what he is going to do next. If a year ago you said "Tom Scott Jousting" I'd have just laughed
Wonder what's going to happen the same time next year. For all we know, Tom could summit Everest, or unearth a pharaoh's tomb, or start crocheting.
@@vigilantcosmicpenguin8721 I'm looking forward to the video entitled "There's a Pharoah's tomb on Mount Everest, and the only way in is with crochet."
“I am a lesbian and therefore don’t drive” Best quote of my morning
I guess they don't have Subarus in the UK
im v happy
@@DasGanon we just have trains instead
@@memediatek aswell really most suburban houses have a train station within a 20 minute walk

i just have to say Tom, i really appreciate the work that goes into the captions on all your videos!
They’re really helpful!
It's so funny that Tom seemed more uncomfortable with the yelling than anything else I've seen on this channel, maybe aside from that time in the cave.
9:51 I'm sorry Tom but this pause is HILARIOUS.
15:11 Sir Scott is looking very formidable in his new armour.
17:41 Tom naming himself gave me a good laugh.
I feel like Tom is secretly a dooms day preper, and is beating his fears so he can survive without society.
This makes me wish Tom could do a team up with Jason Kingsley and his modern history knight stuff.
That slo-mo shot of Thomas the Uncertain was pretty epic.
Rowan putting on the armour gave me strong Dorian Electra vibes, and I'm here for it.
I love how every tomscott+ video starts with "I have never .... but"
Tom: I've never ridden a horse!
Also Tom: I'm going to perform an activity that challenges even experience riders!
Horse: (-_-)
Tom and Rowan need to do more things together. As for Will, I could say a lot of things about him that would not be acceptable in polite society. Needless to say, I want more Will. Yummy.
"I'm a lesbian and therefore don't drive" about broke me with laughter.
this series is so much fun! each video feels very genuine and the all guests thus far have been great!
tom, you are the only person i'm happy to see getting sponsorships, gone from having every sponsor turn away after your show of honesty with VPNs, to now having every video be sponsored
i think it's very neat : )
I love this channel so much! Tom also totally fits the bill for the "unconventional knight" in a play or movie. You look great in that armor, Tom!
Anyone feel like the production team looks over a list of future videos and picks the one control freak Tom will dislike the most?
I have a video idea for Tom that he'd probably have a lot of fun with: he should try machining and/or welding. It's always fun to watch someone learn how to do these things, and it'd be especially cool to see Tom do it
A colab between you and modern history TV would be gold tier
For people who are used to horseriding… when trotting, do you rise when the horse’s back rises, when it falls down, or every other dip?
When it rises. You have to find the rhytm.
you rise when the horse rises
So, the trot is a two beat thing, you don't rise with the back you rise with the leg. Usually the outside front leg. So when the outside front leg is out you are up.
Instead of thinking of the rise, just feel the flow, just like riding a bike on bumpy terrain, use your legs to minimize the impact to yourself and the horse. IE, smooth it out.
use your legs like shock absorbers - dampen the rise and fall, don't try to mimic it.
When Tom was told he would be riding me, I did a bit of a double take...
You felt the frisson, the tingle down the spine.
timestamp?
The color grading in this video is wonderful
Tom needs to do more horsey content trying all the different horse sports, maybe polo next?! Great video amazing
Is there any western riding in the UK? Barrel sports or just doing western vs English riding would be a fun contrast to see Scott explore.
@@GrimmDelightsDice There are some people that do Western in the UK, but it is still quite rare. I actually think, in many ways, Western is closer to mediaeval riding than modern English is; a longer length of stirrup, reins in one hand, neck reining x
Herding bulls in the Carmargue, is another possibility.
Just riding well I think would be interesting
I would love to see show jumping or an attempt at any jumping. Probably trot cross rails.
The edit gave me the slo mo Will footage I didn't know I needed
@17:26 Toby "Alright, let's go... Oh sorry about that, I'll slow down."
Glad you decided to pay for the horse armor DLC you all look great
Will Arnold is fuckin stud. This thing wouldn't exist without him. A treasure he is.
My only critique is that I don't think at any point in the video were we actually introduced to Rowan.
Didn't expect it but this might be my favourite video so far on this channel, the cinematography was amazing! Jousting must've been terrifying back then.
