True story: I once went on a business trip with this colleague. When the duty free came, she wanted a lotion. The flight attendant told her that if she buy a perfume, she gets the lotion at a discount (it could be something else... i don't remember but that was the kind of deal). As my colleague did not want the perfume, she negotiated with the flight attendant. She said, there could be someone in this plane who buys the perfume but not the lotion. If there was, can the discount be given to her and charged in the flight's account as a purchase from a single passenger. The flight attendant agreed and left. Few minutes later, she came back and said someone did indeed bought the perfume without the lotion and offered the discount to my colleague so long as she paid in cash (to avoid discrepancy in the accounts), which my colleague did have (we were on our way back of business trip, so we had unused cash). I was mind boggled that that works.
It’s crazy how some people have so much money that things like this don’t matter to them! I used to work in a department store and I was stationed in Accessories. I once saw a 14 year old girl buy a £1000 pair of Chanel sunglasses simply because they matched her Starbucks Frappuccino. She put them straight on her head and when she bent down to grab her bag (Louis Vuitton of course) they fell off her head and onto the floor! She laughed it off and just said, ‘Whoopsie!’ Her mother laughed too and told her not to worry because they were just sunglasses for shopping. Before I thought they couldn’t get anymore posher if they tried the mother told her daughter they had to leave now to do a quick food shop in _Harrods_ 😳 Years later I still remember them simply because I judged a book by its cover and assumed they’d be rude since they had money when in fact they were both extremely polite and very friendly! 😊

Things usually have a duty or taxes, import/export fee, etc by certain percents depending on what countries you're in.. Duty free means the items that are displayed there free from those taxes.. So usually cheaper from what you're supposed to find in markets.. Why? Because as tourists from another country, we're actually not obligated to pay taxes to the country that you visited.. There even a place in Singapore Airport where you can reclaim back all sales tax you got when you purchased items from Singapore, as long as you keep the receipts, that not from duty free shops. though most people don't want to hustle with it.. When I first visited Singapore with my friend, she asked me to keep all receipts and we got like 7% iirc refunds from all things that were purchased out of duty free shop.. 🤣🤣🤣
