  • Blackpool has one of the worst rates of male suicide in the UK, and one ward the lowest male life expectancy in England.
The Golden Mile now sometimes has more fly-tipped rubbish than tourists.
We joined the Labour candidate for Blackpool North, Chris Webb, on a tour of the area to better understand why there are such high levels of poverty.

I just got home from Blackpool, I'm 27 and it was my first time since I was very young. The sun still shines In Blackpool although I'm old enough now to notice the desperatey and streams of forgotten hotels and B&Bs the place still has the wonderland charm. At the same time it is the definition of bittersweet

been living in Blackpool for 11 years now continuously and all there really seems to be the odd retail job, hotel work and temp seasonal work and even that is now difficult to get - applied 12 xmas vacancies and not even offer of one interview even with plenty of retail experience and up-to-date references . If your a tradesman or lucky enough to be able to get a job with the council/hospitals or in a bank then your very lucky down here and it's even harder for very young or over 40 and even then it's mostly minimum wage. For people that do work self employed such as prom/pier vendors very little wages and hardly any tourists 8months of the year and it's getting worst. Government needs to invest more but same for all seaside resorts. Do love it here though even though little rough round the edges plenty to see and do but with little work can't do a lot of that ? Ha ! Lol !

Blackpool had always been a depressing place to live, it is my home town but I moved away 32 years ago as an 18 year old and my family evetually relocated years later to the Chorley.
What you see today is years of what is effectively managed decline, the council planners never had a vision of how to change what the town could offer. As an example Disney looked at Blackpool as a place to build their theme park. I can just imagine the council not grabbing hold of these opportunities and looking to the future with better clientel who would bring money into the town. Eventually the holiday makers changed from staying in the town for a week or two to just visiting on day trips, hence all of the empty hotels and B&B's. Even Morecambe has a plan to rebuild, enticing tourists with then new Eden project, which will transform their town. I always thought a Vegas style setup might have worked but it would only work with resorts competing against each other and not just a solitary casino/resort. As they say you can't polish a turd but you can roll it in glitter, about sums up the place.

My gf has moved here from Manchester so I spend a lot of time in Blackpool. It's a poor town and the people providing services talk to us like shit . The staff in the train station , bus drivers , publicans. It's because Blackpool has so many druggies and I'm not but these people immediately assume you are . The difference from Manchester is massive.

I have lived in Blackpool for 25 years now and I think it’s a great place especially for places to visit and entertainment if you also include the other close by resorts as well such as st Annes and Cleveleys especially now the season has extended to January but the other half of me yearns for more - a lot still needs to be done and the council are either hardly doing anything or doing it very slowly - I mean the council have been promising a lot but hardly doing much over the years . I’ve been living here and it’s hardly changed much since the 90s and have seen less and less tourists coming and a quarter of people are unemployed here, there is a lot of crime and homeless increasing - it’s like every 200m I walk along the prom I see a homeless person sitting there and they harass people for money - it’s depressing and Its easy to see how tourists feel when they see this and then the town gets a bad reputation . But year after year hardly anything is being done . There’s some very derelict buildings and houses on the backstreets behind the prom . It seems like the government would rather line its own pockets and spend on the wages for the tons of people in the House of Lords most of whom are not really needed (the elite) and foreign aid and immigration than deal with its internal problems . I don’t think it will ever change significantly enough well at least not for the current generation anyway .

Fled as soon as i got my chance, No regrets.
thing is so did everyone else who made the town worthwhile years ago there has been an exodus since 2001.
Because there is no real work most of the year if you are the type who wants to work to better their lot Blackpool will only give you enough to leave and go to a place that will give you a job
The town has filled with crackheads who have been moved on from other towns their presence alone is enough to seal its fate yet it has more problems still.
Yes i said *2001* right BEFORE the recession and for the people giving the remaining old-stock crap for switching political parties Labour did NOTHING for Blackpool, Tory's wont either but its ahistorical to blame them given how long the decline has been happening.
There are some who cant take off the nostalgia goggles, Blackpool has NO industry outside the service economy and there is no benefit to locating a business there.
to the people who thing it can be fixed with "external investment"/Grants for god sake stop throwing money into this blackhole and invest in places that can reindustrialize/regenerate and create jobs to absorb the people who want to get a better life who cant afford to move as far away and flee like i did

There's a dark element that this video doesn't cover. As the Charlene Downes case illustrated, Blackpool has a serious problem with paedophiles and sex offenders. As we've seen so often in the past, paedophiles gravitate towards poor communities because kids are more likely to have chaotic families with nobody acting as their effective guardians. The poverty also makes the kids easier to groom with small amounts of money. The amusement arcades and funfairs attract a steady supply of kids. Blackpool's reputation as a stag do destination has led to an increase in what is effectively sex tourism. It's not unique to Blackpool. Other places have had very similar problems, such as Southend and Great Yarmouth.
