I was thinking more Steve Smith, the little one. He was an All Star and a small guy by NFL standards.
He was a hard worker though. From the stories I remember on him, no matter if the person was talking about something derogatory concerning Smith, they always mentioned how hard he had worked. (Insert practice joke)
Yet, AI was a phenomenally gifted athlete. Maybe he could’ve been a safety. For him to have been as great is just unlikely.
In the NFL, someone who relies on so much of their natural ability, over putting in overtime to get bigger, faster and ultimately better, are more likely to have short careers, and/or be just a backup.

I'm not doubting that he wasn't an all-time player in high school but as a QB in the league, you have to see over the linemen. Basketball was a great decision for him. In football, he has no idea who he would have been drafted to or with. Even if he'd been better than Vick, the NBA pays better and provides way more opportunities after your contract than the NFL.

Good thing AI stuck with playing basketball. It's harder to succeed in the NFL than it is in the NBA; IMO, the NFL is a coaches' and players' league while the NBA is a players' league. Football is where you, your teammates, and your coaches need to be great in order to have success and especially win lots of games. Basketball has way more freedom in its fundamentals and flow. AI is better suited for basketball.

Calvin Ridley, Mohamed Sanu, Devonta Freeman, Taylor Gabriel, Tony Gonzales. C'mon now. No matter where Julio Jones goes, he can't be great all on his own. His teammates will always be a part of why he's great and that's not to discredit julio at all.

My first thought is he was too short, but I forget he is actually 6' tall, which is tall enough for a QB in the NFL. I know he was great in high school, but that doesn't always translate to being great in college, let alone in the NFL. So he would have to be a stand out QB in college and even then he would have to worry about them wanting to make him switch to being a wide receiver in the NFL. Remember as good as Lamar Jackson was in college, people still had been saying that he should switch to wide receiver to play in he NFL.

AI was a pretty great NBA player, outside of his poor FG%. But anyways, there is no sport that he could've been better at than basketball. If you've never played college football or pro football, you can't say that you'd be better at football than AI was at basketball, and that includes if you're AI. He might as well say "I never studied science. But, if I did, I know I'd be an even better astronaut than I was a basketball player." I don't think AI realizes what an elite basketball player he was.
