I used the Murder on the Eberron Express adventure as a prelude to this module. Before the murder mystery could be solved, the lightning rail became engulfed in the Mists, and all of its occupants were pulled into the station in Dread Metrol…
Thanks for reminding me this exists. I’ll have to pick it up. It’d be great fun to run a 1st session for players on the Day of Mourning (without telling them) as they’re defending Metrol from these undead hordes when the grey mists sweep over the city and consume them. Then wake up, time skip ahead 4 years, welcome to your new normal, you can’t leave the city.
Considering reborn, and the technology required to make one, it feels like a thing that could be in Eberron. The idea of trains in a gothic horror setting makes perfect sense, so the trains of Eberron fit right into Ravenloft. Having both realities border on each other is a match made in...well...you know.
In Exploring Eberron, one of the story hooks for Mabar involved Metrol being potentially pulled in during the Mourning, so it sounds like Keith was planning this for awhile. That said, Mabar was shot down in that same book as being responsible for the Mourning. The Mournland is magnitudes larger than the chunks of the Material Plane that Mabar usually consumes, the mists are still present rather than having retreated, and whereas people usually lose all memories of places devoured by Mabar (or have their memories dulled to where they rationalize what they do remember), the Day of Mourning is Eberron's 9/11: everyone knows exactly where they were when Cyre was destroyed.
Dread Metrol was a surprise. I certainly would never have expected anything like this but it was quite interesting. In addition to leaving, as always, the cause of the Mourning as a mystery, it created an interesting hook to solve the problems of dread Metrol, the consequences that would have or even return the city to the world of Eberron (at least that's what I thought when I read the campaign, What if after resolving the plot the city returned to Khorvaire?). It was quite a fun and interesting read.
The plain of dread is a Manifestation zone between Mabar, Dolurrh, and (Lamannia, Thalanis or Xoriat; wherever you think werewolves come from in Eberron)
Funny enough I was running something similar my campaign started as a Waterdeep dragon heist game then moving to cure of strahd and wanted to implement the Ravenloft book I had a player who really wanted to bring back his warforged character from a previous Eberron campaign so was going to use the last passenger minor domain to get him with the rest of the party. The idea is I'm using the Domains of Dread as a link between campaign settings.
6:15 The problem is that Eberron does not have a shadowfell, M'bar is what exists instead. Yes I know the5e version of Eberron is in the great wheel but we aslo know WotC forced Keith to change that so it is not part of his vision.
There are two (that I am aware of) additional Eberron-Ravenloft supplements on the DMsGuild, one details the Cyre1313 mentioned in Van Richten's, the other contains Dread Metrol trinkets.
Keith Baker was the creator of Eberron. Full stop. He won the campaign setting contest in 3rd edition when WoTC was aiming to start a new setting. Eberron won. He wasn't the lead designer, he was the creator.
Great video Jorphdan and very inticing will check it out now. Very quick question - do you think you'll be making any more "Ravenloft's Domains of Dread" explanation videos? Really enjoyed them especially some of the more obscure domains that you touched upon.
Yep I'd like too. I know nobody wants to hear it but I'm struggling to find time and energy for weekly videos. I'm getting through my list of topics slowly and more ravenloft coverage is on their
@@Jorphdan ... oh absolutely... and thank you so much for everything you do... genuinely did not intend to pile on the pressure. Everything you do is fantastic and greatly appreciated.
I’ve just watched your Spelljammer series, and I love the waynyoumgo through the lore and materials of that excellent setting. Do you have any plans for covering Planescape in the same way? Planescape deserves a lot more attention than it gets.
Does Dread Metrol have a solution to actually get out into Eberron? So use this as a starter adventure to go from say Forgotten Realms setting, short stop over in Ravenloft then into Eberron.
so is this keith baker's official explanation of what happened on the day of mourning? are mournlands created when other realms are transformed into a dark domain? this sounds awesome!
I don't think it's his official explanation. He's been very vocal that no one knows what happened on the day of mourning. I think this was a "what if" and a reason to explore cities in Cyre.
Mix Ravnica faction idea, with Eberron setting and use the "curses" from Ravenloft as a means of some factions having access to arcane magics, biological advancements or vampirism and have the center still a mass shit storm and each faction is trying to gun inside the center to uncover lost tech
Running a few campaigns, but at the near end of Avernus, of which the characters are Eberron PCs. If things don’t work out at the very end, I could see getting out of Avernus not going as expected…
Love Eberron! I was excited until you said Level 1. It would be nice to have some higher level adventures written (level 8 or above). Will probably still get this, and use it for inspiration!
Some food for thought here. But the Dread Lord Lady that's "more machine now, than woman" artificer. Names. Eh. Anywho. What if shes connected to "the Lord of Blades" but their separated by the vale. Shes on one side and hes on the other. Destined to reunite one day.... Sorry looked him up as you was talking about the artificer lady. And oh the crossovers.
This was something I planned to use, with the second half of strahd being set in eberron, madame Eva being connected to the daelkyr, and the true reason barovia was sealed away. When the players lit the beacon at argynvostholt, barovia landed back in Cyre, triggering the mourning. As they fought strahd in ravenloft, a few players let me know their characters were Uber-traumatized and were retiring from adventure. Now we’re starting a fresh eberron campaign, and I’m not sure if that’s still the reason for the mourning. I really loved the idea, but it was more for the intrigue of players knowing the cause of the mourning
Eberron Artificer "We can free the realms from these cursed mists. We have the technology-" Barovian rogue "And the gods soiled on my dinner plate. What a terrible night to have a curse on this tosser..."
I feel like literally everyone pronounces Cyre differently. I always pronounced it "sire", which is almost certainly incorrect, but it's too late to change now.
Well that helps sell both doesn't it? Very interesting . Sound like pirates jumping company to company as long as they collect more gold and keep products moving. It's like a DC crossover-lol- Great presentation again thank you!
I'm pretty sure there is a Domain of Dread that exists as a Train. So it would be fun to have the players get on the Train expecting to go somewhere else, but instead have to deal with a Haunted Train ride before getting dropped of here.

I bought this book! Pleasantly surprised by the spider-horses.
Eberron and Ravenloft is like peanut butter and chocolate for me. Can't wait to run this at some point.

We did a "Dread Metrol" episode ofoutshow for Halloween. It was a really fun time and let us play in this amazing domain.
Thanks, you made me realize that a campaign i'm kinda writing in the forgotten realms could actually be a FR/Ravenloft thing.
I have a table sized version of that Eberron map signed by Kieth Baker. It was an official map back when the 4e Eberron book come out.
Last call for Cyre1313 (malevolent laughter)

I actually already have this book! It’s super good!
The plain of dread is a Manifestation zone between Mabar, Dolurrh, and (Lamannia, Thalanis or Xoriat; wherever you think werewolves come from in Eberron)
Well if it’s in D&D, it’s in Eberron. Just as the OG ECS stated..: long live Hellcow!
The defense of the City reminds me of Falkoniva's theme. Perhaps the Queen was punished in a different way. Just very similar theme.
Keith actually explains the difference on his blog on his website, has a whole article dedicated to stuff about the book IIRC.
I love the supplement also! So well thought out and executed.

Kieth Baker is great.
This is great I've always thought of eberron as some what horror in a way. Eberron is my favorite setting as well
There’s precedent for this! In Expedition to Castle Ravenloft, it was advised to place Barovia deep in the Mror Holds. :)

He was the lead designer of this supplement, I should have comma'd my sentence.

The Centisteed from Gamma World
👍🏻
Nothing new about this concept, Ravenloft has always been a realm that took pieces from other settings.
Dark lord but it's a Queen ?? The title would be Dark Lady or Dark Queen .
If you smash them you get :
Page 1 Ravenloft
Page 1 Eberron
Page 2 Ravenloft
Page 2 Eberron
Huh, in my head it was always pronounced like “sire”
I think both are correct 😁
I'm doing this in a new campaign. Can't wait to try it out.

If there is one Domain it can definitely be combined with, it is the Cyre 1313 Mourning Rail.
Eberron Artificer "We can free the realms from these cursed mists. We have the technology-"
Barovian rogue "And the gods soiled on my dinner plate. What a terrible night to have a curse on this tosser..."
I have come to pronounce the nation Cyre like "Sire" and the nationality Cyran as "Seer-in".
I feel like literally everyone pronounces Cyre differently. I always pronounced it "sire", which is almost certainly incorrect, but it's too late to change now.
Ive heard it pronounced Sire in plenty of audiobooks. I think jorphdan is mispronouncing it, which is kinda ironic, considering his name.
This sounds awesome! I’m gearing up to run some Ravenloft games so I may just have to invest in this!
Really awesome, Jorphdan! Thank you for bringing this to my attention. 🍻❤️

14:30 Bringing Cyre back might retrigger the war though. Only the fear of the mourning resulted in the treaty of Thronehold.
I was looking through the ravenloft book yesterday.. it just makes me want to lots of locations..
So thought this was going to be a Frankenstein story or something but then my ears kept listening but my pen ink was flowing 😎

There is another supplement on the Guild detailing the Cyre 1313!
Check out Rashemen Campaign guide maybe? Looks quite good. One of the designers for Eberron Ravenloft worked on it.
Quite like these DMguilds reviews.
