I was named Alexandria coz I was born on the day Alexander the Great allegedly died and my papa loves anything Egyptian. He said he named me specifically after the first Alexandria that was founded and coz the great library was there. He said it worked out because I’m a big book worm and I try to absorb as much fun facts and history as I can.
I wanted to name one of my daughters that. My wife wouldn’t let me.

Till the end of the video, I was waiting to listen about Alexandria. Alexandria was always associated with Hypatia, a unique women of her times,said to possess rare combination of great beauty and erudition, became a victim of and mercilessly treated by obscuratists. Her brutal death also signifies the story of the end of glory of Alexandria.

I might as well say it. Early Christians were like present day jihadis. They trashed Alexandria. They skinned Hypatia alive with shards of pottery, and prior, the savages somehow were able to bring down the great Temple of Serapis which houses what was left of the Library. It p£ssed me off that the narrator waxed vague when describing the end of antiquity circa the Fourth century.
Hypatia was brilliant mayhematician. Killed by Christians.

If only the library had survived. This is exactly why tearing down statues is not a good idea. History is what it is wiping it out means it will be forgotten, and repeated almost in a rhythmic fashion.

I think what he meant was New York as a young city, built using the latest in construction techniques and mostly planned as a grid from its inception, unlike the slower and more organic growth of old world cities such as London and Paris.

Most of the important works were copied and in other libraries. We didn't lose too much, just a bunch of lesser known works that people didn't feel were valuable enough to be copied.

What i wouldn't give to have lived in ancient times.. The times n society of today have just turned me off completely.. Even in 15+ years time i cannot believe the changes I've seen, n not for the better

with systems of water piping,
cisterns and wells
and the canal /aqueduct system
fed from a branch of the Nile.
Even the street grid
was planned to ease traffic congestion.

I’m pretty sure a lot of the scrolls were moved to other libraries before it was completely burned. The library had trouble with fires a few times so they copied a lot and moved a lot over the years

Stone is heavy and settles into the surrounding earth 😅over hundreds of years. Volcanos, earthquakes, fires, wars destroy old structures. Builders prefer to build on a plarform like structure, thus over existing ruins. Only buildings that have been, more or less, in constant use since construction, like the Parthenon, the temples in Pastuem, Agrigentum, the Flavian Coliseum, & castle St Angelo have not settled below current street level level
God I wish I could be as successful and badass as Alexander the great. He was pretty much the living embodiment of Zeus and brought each empire he conquered to a sort of Greek influenced golden age yet I still dislike it that he sacked thebes in Greece.(he totally decimated thebes burned the city state straight to the mutha fucken ground into ash THAT SAVAVGE) He was a tough as steel momma's boy whom was motivated by his mother to take the world by storm. It was Alexander's mother whom the hard base foundation in his life. ALEXANDER WAS A GOD AMONG MEN! 🤘🏿💪🏿
And, as you know, he did all of his military career between the ages of 20 and 32. A great many 20 year olds in the West today are drooling on themselves. Today, it appears that adolescence has now been extended into one's late 20s, may all the Gods help us, even into their early 30s.

Why is this silly story a part of the documentary. It is totally unneccesary. It is disrespectfull to subtitle a foreign person who takes the trouble to speak English. When you are going to do that, then just let them talk in their mothertongue.
The Romans didn't take over Alexandria and add Egypt until the Founding of the principate by Octavian Caesar. So why would she have to leave Alexandria when the lighthouse was still being built around the time of ptolomey II?
@JRG Yes...they were a client kingdom. Same as Judea and all future Roman provinces once were. Under Roman law a client kingdom and friend of Rome was still independent...technically.

Oh, the total has risen since I last checked, last absolutely wonderful you beautiful amazing people of the world. I'm not Ukrainians or even in Europe, but my heart is with them, my prayers as well. Ive visited the marvel of ancient Egypt during a two months trip from Alexandria till Meroe ruins so i know wat im talkin about

Alexandria was created as a Greek inspired city and symbol of Greek culture and Greek (Alexander the Greats) power. The Ptolemaic dynasty married their siblings to not mix with the locals. And yes the Greek dynasty took on some Egyptian customs and titles, but so did the Romans especially locally.
There were no major battles between the Greeks and Persians in Egypt.
Egypt was the only Roman province that was not allowed any representation in the senate. No senator was allowed to visit Egypt, and no local representation was allowed to be formed. After the battle of actium, the Romans were not taking any chances with Egypt; if Egypt won the battle of actium, they would have done the same to Rome.
Alexandria is a greek inspired city, but with an Egyptian mix. There is no city in Greece that matched its size or grandeur. When the narrator said It's like NewYork to London or Paris, he is kinda right, but in this case, The Egyptians had ALOT to bring to the table - Never before or after, that the Greeks built in that scale.
Ptolemaic incest had nothing to do with 'not wanting to mix with the locals', they could have married Macedonians. The incest was solely due to their blind imitation of ancient pharaohs.
The Romans hated everything Egyptian, they hated them for Cesar, Mark Antony, battle of Actium, they hated their Gods, Women rights, even their form of christianity..

When you write that there were no battles in Egypt between Greeks and Persians you are semi right, but that is not my point. The point is, that Egypt was part of the Persian empire at that point and was taken from the Persians by force. The last resistance Alexander had met on his way to Egypt was in Gaza which before the Persian conquest also belonged to Egypt and was controlled by the Persian satrap in Egypt at the time.
No province had "representation" in the Senate. There were Senatorial and Imperial Provinces but that only had to do with who appointed the administration, not with representation. Egypt was the only province that was governed by a prefect from the equestrian class, but he had the same standing as a proconsul. The senate had mostly administrative tasks during the empire the closeness to the emperor decided who got the most representation and Egypt with it's prefect directly appointed by the Emperor skipped the senate. Outside of Alexandria which was directly controlled by the prefect Egypt was divided into districts ruled and administrated by representatives of the Egyptian upper class. Your claim that no local representation was allowed to be formed is false.
The battle of Actium had little to do with how Rome treated Egypt. What do you mean "were not taking any chances"? There was no real threat from Egypt as a power after Actium and Actium was part of the civil war between Octavian and Antony.
Alexandria was a mixed city for sure not only Greek and Egyptian but also with a large Jewish influence, still it was founded and chosen as a capital to show Greek influence and rule over Egypt. I didn't say that Egyptians didn't bring anything to the table, but when you talk about scale the environment and symbolism of the city is far more important than anything else. In Greece because of the terrain it was harder to build to that scale and as "the" Greek city in Egypt and city of Alexander there was a special importance placed on Alexandria.
My comment about incest was partly meant as a joke but partly had still the effect that they didn't mix with the locals.

There were Temples of Isis and Serapis in Rome itself and all over the Roman empire, there were Egyptian statues and obelisks in Rome, there is a Roman grave in the shape of a pyramid. Romans had a fascination with Egypt there was a time where Egyptian was "the" style in Rome and everybody tried to emulate it or use visuals from Egypt to sell their product. Egypt was seen as a mystic region a region of wisdom.

That had nothing to do with Egypt as a location the conflict of early Christianity had more to do with the the different religious viewpoints and interpretations of who Jesus supposedly was. Pretty much all early denominations "hated" each other and there were bloody conflicts among many of them. That is not particular to the "Egyptian version".
That there were more Christians persecuted under Roman Christian rulers than under Roman Pagan rulers is another discussion.
