    Darbin Orvar , Linn, one "accessory" that might work well for it is to make a 3rd panel that's either frosted or maybe sanded with a very fine grit to act as a diffuser. Depending on the type and size of the screws used to fasten the light together, maybe gluing some small rare earth magnets in the corner screw locations to make the diffuser panel more easily removable.

    Now you're talking my language Linn. I love working with metal and electricity. I have a full-blown PBX system running on a raspberry pi in my house that can handle five simultaneous calls. There is a metal lathe and mill in my garage however I still watch all of your videos and marvel at your creativity.

    I like it, maybe a slide in diffuser would be useful:)

    You really know how to light up a room, Linn :)
    Thanks for putting up links for all the bits and pieces. I'd be interested in making something like this using mobile phone batteries for power. They hold a lot of charge & their thin form would suit this build, I think.

    Nice work; just a word of caution there is voltages present in the hotshoe when you take a photo. maybe use a chunk of polycarb to mount it. by using the painters tape as you did you likely isolated it enough but thought I'd mention it.

    I am not a fan of non-rechargeable batteries, especially when it's for things that draw alot of power. But you are right, "managing" a pack of several Lithium cells in series is annoying. I don't know if you already have, but if you search ebay for "lithium step up" or "lithium led driver" you will find quite alot of modules that will provide 12V from a single lithium cell (or multiple in parallel). Some of the driver are also constant current drivers so you can hook up a single high power LED. To charge the battery there are also alot of USB-to-single-cell-lithium charger boards (many including cell protection circuits). I love how you can just pick your modules on ebay for a few bucks and stick them together to make a project!

      She said Li-Po batteries, so she probably meant rechargeable ones. But not a fan of the format either.

    Dollar store picture frames are a great and cheap starting point for led panels. An 8x10 frame is the perfect size for a 300 led panel.

    Great project! Boost converters, constant current supplies, and recharging circuitry would be a cool future improvement. Also, light diffusion is, for the things I photograph, a must.

  • @DamienWise
    @DamienWise 8 лет назад +1

    Cool!
    I'd like to build a light like this with a rechargeable lithium ion battery. As Linn said, it's extra complexity and cost, but I think not much extra mass or bulk, and better in the long run.
    Also, I'd consider diffused/frosted perspex. The light will be more soft, and offer more pleasing results for photography.

    I will be trying a battery pack soon, I'm thinking about wiring series for the supply and a charge plug wired to it in parallel. 'm impressed with this dealing and the length of time you get from those small battery's

    Nicely done. One improvement suggestion would be to have a joule thief as a part of energy circuit.
    Weirdly, I personally prefered the un-lighted photos during comparision, but it may be just because of youtube compression or my personal taste :)

    Beautifully done! I must say, that method of construction with the layers of perspex and PCB standoffs is my _absolute favourite_ :D! I've done so many projects like that. I love how it allows you to add extra layers if needed, if you need to add more circuitry or space or anything else, plus you can see how it works from virtually every angle :P

    Lynn, that's a fantastic idea!! Great Job! I have a suggested improvement. What about sanding the interior surface of the clear panel that goes in front of the LEDs with something like 1500 grit sandpaper to give it a "frosted" appearance. This would diffuse the light and make it less direct and intense if that's something you might need. Great job!!

    That's a really clever design, but I would have personally used 18650s to power it. Much larger, but a lot more power dense. A way around the "parallel and series" issue you listed would be to charge it the same way a LiPo RC pack is charged, with a balance lead. That way you can charge each cell individually. I do that with my cordless drill conversions.

    I get rechargeablae LiIOn coin cell batteries for free from old computer... by the truck load. Printers also have them and laptops of course.
    Once could also use a booster chip (aobut a dollard on ebay) and boos the coin voltage up to 5V., then ger rid of the sstupid resistors on these LED strips that just waste power in heat and get more life out one or two coints in parrallel.
    this way you can easily rechargethem.
    I like this project. very cool again.

    You can salvage lithium ion cells from old laptop battery packs, just look around for some battery disposal trash bins. Then take 1 or 2 cells, wire them in parallel. This way you can use a TP4056 USB charger board. Then use a boost converter module to increase the voltage to 12V for the LEDs. You will get much more light and runtime out of this.

    Not sure how hard it would be to install a USB plug for plugging into a computer or a phone/iPad charger/adapter to plug into the wall. Also, hot glue some magnets on the back for a quick mount to a metal surface. You could also put magnets on the front and gave different "lenses" to put on the front - sort of like you did with your desk lamp. Just some brain storming thoughts. Nice project with lots of potential for various permutations. Scott

    One step further would be buying 2 PWM dimmers and using both warm and cold white LEDs so that you can vary the white balance by adjusting the ratio/intensity of the two.

    Your channel is probably my favourite one and really enjoy watching all of your builds.I like this idea but would have strips of polycarbonate on the top, left and right (the same width as the gap you already have) hot glued to the front with an easy to make weather seal for the back. This would offer protection from the elements if you wanted to take the unit outside. Just a thought :-)

    • @darbinorvar
      @darbinorvar  8 лет назад

      +Darryl Toombs It would offer protection, but it would also make it kind of annoying to open the unit up to change the batteries...

    • @darryltoombs1076
      @darryltoombs1076 8 лет назад

      +Darbin Orvar Thanks for the reply :-) You still have to open the unit to change the batteries even the way it is now so maybe instead of screwing the back down some quick release clips could be used. Hopefully I will get a chance to build one of these as I like the idea very much.

    to anyone wanting to make this
    make sure you get a neutral white led, so it will not be too yellow or too blue
    neutral is between 4500k and 5000k

    • @Elhardt
      @Elhardt 8 лет назад +1

      The only tints I saw on Amazon (at least for this specific company's LED strips) was 3000K warm white and 6000K day light. I too think something closer to 4500K would be ideal, so I figured that a person could buy both the 3000K and 6000K and interleave LEDs from each tint to get something in between.
