I almost always fling the car into reverse because I know the chances are pretty high that the other driver will be "uncomfortable" reversing. I've seen some beauties here in Cornwall!
Whats funny to me here is the Police car did not follow the Highway Code. Rule 155 of the highway code says: Give way to road users coming uphill whenever you can. If necessary, reverse until you reach a passing place to let the other vehicle pass. This said the Police Car may have argued he didn't feel it was safe to reverse... but either way you did a good job to sort this out. 🙂
Highway rule 155 is just another example of arse about face highway code rules then. A much, much better rule, would be to give way to road users on the descent. I'll let you work out why. Ps, it's got something to do with the clutch.

Because reverse gear is a lower ratio traditionally and that makes it easier to travel uphill. Although a 4x4, the police vehicle will almost certainly have a heavy duty grill in the rear to stop equipment from encroaching on the cockpit area. Also, there may be a matrix sign which can restrict the view slightly. Even so, a little polite communication from the police driver might have helped.
I had a similar situation, instead of a Police car it was a combine that was coming in the oncoming direction. It was a good test of my reversing skills, but slow and steady I manage to reverse all along the track / lane and back to a passing point.
The Police car doesn't have sirens on from what I can see and we weren't shown what was behind the police car so the police car might have been able to reverse and save time and money 🤔
I'm suprised safely reversing around tight cones or something isn't a requirement on the driving test. When I did my test over 10 years ago now, the only reversing they even taught me was reversing into a bay and around a corner.

There was a comedy sketch about this many years ago. A well known comedian but I can't remember who the AA and RAC both called in to mediate because neither driver would back down. (Edit) It was leslie Phillips and Bernard Cribbins about 60 years ago in black and white TV. Comedy Playhouse. It was called 'Impasse'.
Had similar after the main road was closed due to an accident (wouldn't have chosen to drive the road otherwise) but I was driving a truck with 2 cars behind me, met 2 cars coming the other way, that was fun and games and ended up damaging my bumper as there was literally nowhere to go but squeeze up against a tall bank.
Any driver who cannot competently reverse their vehicle,such as in this instance,should not be holding a drivers licence. Sadly this incident typifies all too often the dreadful standard of driving on the roads of Britain today.

Crazy- I get we have a lot of small lanes in this country and I’ve seen a lot round here in Kent, try to avoid them but have ended up having to go up on banks and do a bit of reversing before but this is ridiculous, imagine you got all the way back up only for another car to come up in front of you again 😂
Had to reverse on a narrow windy Lincolnshire road yesterday, as a large tractor.....and trailer was also reversing in front of of me. I thought is the road blocked??? Nope a lady in a Range rover was coming the other way and obviously didnt want to reverse...!!! Poor tractor driver.
Why, just why? It may be chauvanist, but they probably assumed that the lady in the car did not feel comfortable reversing what must have been over 100 metres down such a narrow road.

@@artvanwag3257 You are making a huge deal out of nothing. Some drivers just get more nervous long distance in reverse than others and would rather somebody else took over. There is a difference between being able to do something and being comfortable doing it.

Unfounded rumour - we've had similar situation to what you describe on other Cornish roads in the past; but on this occasion we made it all the way to the top without meeting any other traffic.
Everyone involved here should hand their license in. The first driver for not being able to reverse, the cop for not volunteering to reverse when they are supposed to be so highly trained, and everyone else in the cam car for listening to Dads Army while on a road trip.

I wouldn't have reversed. Aren't the police supposed to help people? I'd have taken the key out of the ignition, dangled it for the cops to see and dropped it onto the dash (as I have done in similar circumstances in the past).
You’ll be driving down that road forever if you have to keep stopping and reversing, giving way to other drivers coming from the opposite direction. Why don’t the local council there widen the road a little bit and build a lay-by in the middle of the road so the driver doesn’t have to reverse completely back.
Many of the roads in Cornwall are protected against development for environmental and historical reasons (National Heritage) e.g. many date back over 1,000 years and now act as wildlife corridors across the county, and are in conservations areas etc. This particular road is inside a designated wildlife reserve area.
