I'm 47 years old and was raised by a Veteran of the Vietnam war. I got a front row seat to see the mental damage done to people who have no idea who or where to turn to get help. He took his life 4 days after the Twin Towers fell in 2001. I've always found such irony with our military and that is we can train people to kill, but not equip so many of them to train themselves to not kill themselves due to the trauma post war.

Hafer and Rut conversations need to be prioritized to the same level the Andy, Evan, and Mike ones are. They have a great connection and it’s the chicken soup many are looking for.

This is so important. And yet it doesn’t make any sense to us at first when we get told that we need to stop helping and serving other people so much, and start helping and serving ourselves first.
    I appreciate you, Rut.
Former SEAL mentor of mine told me something along the lines of:
“Gotta be able to help yourself before you can expect to help others.”
I’m facing a similar situation to this at the moment. I’ve been helping a group of non-squared away older people who need the help, want and expect the help, but they don’t seem to really appreciate or respect the help, yet they have pretty much come to expect it. For free…and they’ll complain and talk trash about me when they don’t get the constant help from me. All while making me the butt of their jokes, talking trash to me both behind my back and to my face, and making me the proverbial bottom of their mess of a totem pole. Not exactly a pleasant situation on my end, but my dumb self has been giving them the help for quite some time now.

ITS DAVE!!!!!! OMG! I have missed David Rutherford in the podcast world for so long! Him and Marcus Latrell got me through some extremely shitty PTSD moments in my life. The second I saw he was on here. I knew I had to listen. Big love to all of you.!

So much to unpack here. This was so revealing and covered so much! I've been devouring similar podcasts for over a year now. This one hit hard as they all do. But, it felt like there might be the start of a blue print somehow to fix what is happening to our warriors. Not fix them, fix the system! I recently lived in Vietnam as a Canadian for 2.5 years. Because of my deep dive into the history of that place. I sometimes wonder, if it might behoove our psych teams to look into the survivors of both South Vietnam and North and look at the behaviours and philosophies of how they have adapted. Please don't hate me for this comment, but touring through Khe Sanh during the pandemic, with a former soldier, I'm guessing from the north. Showed absolute respect and was absolutely humble and respectful. Further admission of this was large American trucks flanked by American flag decals that went from headlights to tail lights.....

Put all those helping organizations together into some kind of “Warriors United” or “United Warriors League Of Healing” organization. Kind of like why the “United Nations” was originally formed, many sources to help those who need it!

I'm not sure that the UN is the best example of organizations collectively working together for good, but your concept is solid.
