Two years ago. Nice tour planned from Gaiole in Chianti to Siena. Big accident outside Siena and had to take an alternative routing which sent us on short cutting through the wineries with a little less nice Strade Bianche and up to 18% gradient (and nice big stones). I was happy to have at least a 28 mm tire and disc brakes.... But at the end, we loved it and could celebrate on a nice Bistecca and a nice bottle of wine.
"Jasper, we need you to work the Newcastle and Amsterdam flights, but unfortunately Florence as well. I know it's kind of last minute hectic. Can you make it?" "Florence? Hmm, uh yeah...No worries, I think I'll be able to manage that. Any layover though?" "Yes, unfortunately we can't get you right back. But really appreciate it, if you..." "Sure. No worries, just a day or two. I'll figure it out..."
I actually bought an dedicated cycling head unit for navigation purposes, because I had a similar phone mount but navigation on phone using GPX was/is a headache. Strava doesn't have it at least. The free GPX-reading apps are funky and I was too greedy to check out the paid ones. However, I think Komoot also offers navigation on the phone but never looked back when I got a proper head unit with navigation and rerouting built in. I have the Wahoo Bolt V2, the version that replaced the current you have I see. The new Bolt has actual navigation (instead of breadcrumb trail on Bolt V1), can reroute you when off-track and it is actually very good at this. It makes good decisions and tries to keep your route flowing, in contrast to Garmin which makes you do U-turns all the time.
So for gps, we still need the dedicated cycling devices. It’s actually kind of strange when you think about it. Looking at the processing power of the modern phones 🤷🏼♂️
@@jasperverkuijl Yeah processing power is definitely not an issue nowadays. I think phones would run into other problems because they are way overpowered for just navigation and some data collection. Sensors are supporting BTLE more and more so that is also not an issue. I think the major drawbacks would be screen readability in full sunlight, battery life and degradation for long rides. Most high end phones are also equipped with OLED screens and are not so resistant to sunlight. Also, I have yet to find an app that can do it all in terms of GPX support, navigation and rerouting, data collection with sensors and exporting to sports platforms like Strava and such. Maybe it exists but I don’t know about it.
Perfect video! Speaking of training for mountains in flattish terrain - how do you actually train descending? I see it as a harder think to replicate in flat terrain for the training
I use the Cadence app on iPhone. It's awesome! Like a powerful edge 1000+. Also, I wish I knew about that case/mount before. I'm using the Spigen Gear Lock.
Since @Jasper Verkuijl already uses the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt, Komoot will be a great app for navigating and planning routes. Routes from komoot sync with the Bolt including directions (which aren't on the bolt with the use of normal gpx files). Also, the komoot interface for navigation on phones itselves is indeed pretty good.
Tuscany looks like the absolute dream. A live postcard. I‘m using the obvious QuadLock and it never let me down. Uses a bit more space because you have to rotate the phone when you take it off. What‘s the law concerning bike packing in the Netherlands? Can you put up your tent where you want like in France?
I have a mouse case for phone . It kicks ass. I like it a lot better then the otter that I used to use. They have lots of cool mounts but I don't use a mount for anything so...
5 years ago we would have complained about shitty Italian unpaved roads. Somehow that has turned around 180 degrees and we are now meant to rejoice when the asphalt turns to crap and we are on a road bike with 25mm tyres. How did that happen???
Tuscany is a super cool place to ride bikes! I went on the pro race Strade Bianche course in 2022 to get the Brevetto and it was one of the most amazing things I did cycling! ruclips.net/video/axRISysYFY0/видео.html 😉 Do you still remember like me all the vibrations I got on that bumpy gravel? Imagine doing that in the rain and wind 🤣
@@jasperverkuijl You don't know?? There has a been a whole dialogue about it for years! Florence By Bike is awesome - Lovely people, super friendly. For 18 months they were my go-to bike shop in Florence. Totally recommend.

It was Florence By Bike on Via S. Zanobi - totally recommend them
How much did they charge you for a bike rental?
I think it was like 45€ or so
