  • Recognizing the nuances of a cyber attacker's behavior is pivotal for strengthening cybersecurity defenses. Yet, the absence of substantial publicly available datasets hinders our understanding of attackers' decision-making processes and the cognitive biases at play. In this presentation, I will elaborate on our approach to addressing this data gap through the design of controlled laboratory experiments. I will share valuable insights gained from these experiments, shedding light on the cognitive vulnerabilities observed in the decision-making of attackers.
Dr. Palvi Aggarwal serves as an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science department at the University of Texas at El Paso. Previously, she held a post-doctoral fellowship at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, USA. Dr. Aggarwal's research is centered on the socio-technical aspects of cybersecurity. She currently spearheads the interdisciplinary Psyber Security Lab at UTEP, dedicated to enhancing cybersecurity through a deep understanding of human decision-making processes and associated vulnerabilities. Dr. Aggarwal's impactful research has been disseminated through publications in esteemed conferences such as HFES, HICSS, AHFE, ICCM, and GameSec. Additionally, her work has found a place in reputable journals, including Human Factors, Topics in Cognitive Science, and Computers & Security. Notably, her papers on cyber deception and cognitive modeling, featured in AHFE, HICSS, and GameSec, have been honored with prestigious best paper awards.
