Very informative and well done! 2 Questions: 1) My app is a 2005 Volvo Penta 8.1Gi and I'm hoping to connect it to an existing/mounted Lowrance 3500C. Any feedback is welcomed. If that is a "no-go" I am willing to swap that thing out for a decent Garmin to do the trick. Any recommendations there? 2) Now for the off-topic question... What do you like or dislike about that Throttle Controller you have vs the standard all-in-one version? I like the idea of separating the gear action from the throttle action but I wonder if it makes it a lot more difficult to parallel park against a dock as an example. Thanks from Texas!
Great to meet you! Where in Texas? We are in Round Rock, right North of Austin. 1) Your engine should be supported by the Fox Marine gateway. You just have to get the part number off of the engine computer to get the correct gateway from Fox Marine. For the 3500C, that's a pretty old unit. Looking at the documentation for the 3500C it looks like it supports limited NMEA2000 inputs, maybe GPS? But I can't find solid info on whether it will output engine data or not. Worst case if you install the Fox Marine gateway and your Lowrance does not support engine data, you can still read it all on your cellphone with the Fox Marine mobil app. But it sure is convenient to have it on your display.... 2) Our previous 3 boats were all single lever, this is the first one we have owned with the separate levers. It took a few times to get used to it, but now I really do like it a lot more. For docking it is WAY easier, because any maneuvers at the doc are always at idle speed anyway. So I just keep the throttle at the minimum selection and only use the other lever to go forward, reverse, or neutral. Leaves less room for accidental throttle mistakes in my opinion.
@@NKPGarage We are east of Dallas in Heath (Rockwall County). We boat on Lake Ray Hubbard most of the time. I think I will probably just upgrade that 3500C to a newer Garmin version that will work for any data the ECU will put out. GOOD-TO-KNOW on the dual throttle! I like the sound of that. It looks cool too 😊 Now if I could just find one! I’ve looked all over for a Volvo Penta compatible one but they aren’t easy to find.
Well done. I'm in the process of adding a NMEA network as well. Fusion 770 to Garmin73 SV. I have twin year 2000 volvo penta 5.0. I will investigate the ECU connection. thanks
Rookie question. I’m trying to replace analog gauges with a digital screen unit. it’s a 2020 chaparral. What do I need to purchase and do you think all the proper wiring will be there and ready to attach to whatever unit I’m installing ?
Take a look at these two videos. They will give you a better idea of how I wired them up and what parts I used: ruclips.net/video/jyVBkMlIIk8/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/OldAiFfNYg4/видео.html
Hey great video! I am planning on installing similar system on my boat. Do you know if it is possible to use both the chartplotter display AND the analog gauges that are currently connected? Or, is it just one or the other? Been trying to get fuel tank data on simrad with no results, appears it’s analog. Thanks,
On our boat the fuel level sensor does not talk to the ECU, it only displays to the analog gauge. In order to get it to output NMEA2000 data that you can show to your display you will need a level sensor translator like this. amzn.to/3L9vRfG
Ok thank you. But I thought in your video you get the digital from the gateway, and back up with analog. I have been going round and round with Mercury and Simrad all last season and can’t figure it out. There is currently one pink wire running to the harness on the engine from the fuel tank. I did what you stated, removed a couple gauges and added the simrad in center of dash panel with the black composite. So it is not possible to use both the analog and chart plotter? I’m really confused, sorry.
So sorry about the audio. Not sure what happened there in the audio recording. I will re-r cord this and load again next time we are back on the water.
It depends on which PCM/ECU your engine uses. See the Fox Marine FAQ here: fox-marine.com/index.php?route=information/information&information_id=7 Also would be worth sending them an email, they are very helpful.
I havent done a ton of research yet on that. The one I had saved on my parts to buy list was the Garmin Get 10 adapter that will translate the signal from the OEM tilt sensor to NMEA2000.
@@NKPGarage Take a look at my email, we might be able to help each other. Take a look at the Noland RS 11 unit. It might help where the Fox Marine falls short.
I think the 125sv is the same software package that my 73 runs. Yours is the echo map UHD right? Do you have an engine gateway hooked up and connected to an NMEA2000 network with your Garmin?

Hello I just sent you an email maybe we can help each other or you can help me, and thanks for the video. Did you ever add a sensor to detect trim on your Fox Marine? I am thinking of taking a slightly different approach. I have a Noland unit RS 11 (programmable) which is similar to the Fox Marine. With the Noland I am able to tag off of sensors such as tach, voltage, oil pressure, water pressure or any 5 volt or resistance value so that I can include these readings that the Fox Marine is not able to do. I can then use the Fox Marine for what it can read from the ECM. I am hoping we can share experiences and possibly help each other out on this project since there seems to be limited information on the internet to support this. I look forward to your response.
