Can I just say we all appreciate you Pat and all the work you and others do on behalf of thousands of trainers and dog owners all over the country.
Prong collars saved my dog. I'm not the only one.

A flat collar can also be used in an abusive fashion, it all depends on the person/asshole at the other end of the leash, all training tools can be used in a punitive manner.

Really good video again Pat. You’ve got the issue right on the head - this is not about animal welfare but more following correct legislative process and considering all points in a balanced way. The government thinking it will be ok to just slip this in to get the popular vote. Is it of any benefit to know who is sitting on the parliamentary committee and contact them directly in a respectful way?

If they are adding/changing legislation around training tools, rather than straight out banning certain tools, I believe the legislation should be focused around the use of training tools as a whole, and ensuring tools such as prongs, face collars and other aversive tools to be used under the guidance of a qualified dog trainer, or through an obedience club to help avoid improper use.

Please read for some information about the prong collar before you judge or use. It is a TRAINING TOOL and should ONLY be used for walks and training sessions! No dog should EVER be tied up with one on, and they are not for wearing around. Buying a quality collar that fits your dog is important. I refuse to use anything that isn’t herm sprenger. There should always be a space for the dogs trachea in the middle and it should always stay there on the walk. The collar is designed so that pressure is equally applied around the whole neck, whereas a regular collar will damage a dogs trachea over time. However all the information in the world cannot stop an idiot from misusing this tool. Your dog should never be in pain. Misuse of this collar can also cause more issues. It all comes down to if you really know what you are doing.

Prong collars works if done correctly, I've corrected many people at the dog park who used prong collars without research or in the wrong way and have given people advice to getting a prong collar if everything else fails. Instead of always correcting your dog with your voice adding stress to yourself and a dog who has no idea what its doing wrong, why not have your dog learn from a training tool? Again it's a training tool. My dog's prong collar has prevented me from giving my high energy rottweiler mix away to a shelter. My dog is always excited when I place the prong collar on him, I've reinforced it using treats, toys, patience and love. The prong collar has made things easier for me and my dog. I use it as a training tool not as punishment. I only use a prong collar when we go outside on walks where things are unpredictable. Regular collars has done more damaged to my dog than a prong could ever do. I'm saying this as a first time dog owner who's not a dog trainer in any sense of the word but a dog lover. I've seen many people around my neighborhood who are afraid to use prong collar and are always yelling and choking their dogs with regular collars on basic simple walks. I saw a lady a few days ago who got dragged by her reactive Saint Bernard who weighed 160 pounds. She had bruises all over her body because of her dog's reactivity. And when I told her about the prong collar she seemed interested, she even allowed me to put it around her dog's neck. All her dog's reactivity was gone within an hour. I even asked her to place the prong collar on my neck, and had her pull it in any direction she pleased. Her ending response was "wow that's amazing but it looks scary" meaning she isn't interested in it. I was very disappointed because it's a 3 year old Saint Bernard who weighed 160 who nearly out weighed her by 60 pounds. I guarantee she will give up her dog up once she reaches her boiling point ending in another dog being euthanized because of a irresponsible owner. How many more bruises do you need?

This makes me happy that I live in the US for once. I have two pitbulls that would pull so hard on their flat collars. So I started to use a prong collar on both of them. Because I researched and learned how to use a prong collar, my dogs no longer need them and they off leash heel. I trust my female 100% off leash. Wherever I go she goes. No leash, head tucked on my knee, looking up at me for guidance. This is obviously a political move and someone “donated” to your representatives or political branch that is trying to ban them. Animal rights activists would rather your dog strangle themselves on a flat collar than be slightly discomforted by a prong collar. They don’t care about animals, they care about their virtue signaling.

I love my prong collar and so does my dog. If it weren't for my prong, she would not be with me today.
Unfortunately the more bans we get across the globe the more likely it is your country will eventually follow suit.
We need to fight the bans wherever they are in the world.

Prongs have been banned in Victoria for a long time now.
With QLD passing this legislation, it's only a matter of time before it's banned Australia wide.
I got friend to give me a 'correction' while I was wearing a good quality prong. I have to say, it was a lot more comfortable than a correction chain or poor quality prong.

If this passes dogs will suffer. Peripd.full stop. Prong collars prevent injuries to BOTH dogs & people. People with disabilities & the elderly who have large powerful dogs rely on prong collars to ensure safety. Sad

    Hi Pat,
Do you have tips on walking my Maremma who weighs about 50kg? He pullss, he is reactive to other dogs... all of which happened after the ban of prong collars.
He was heeling like a champ with a prong on and I only used it a couple of times. (A trainer trained me to use it)....
Then he was attacked by a dog who was off leash and untrained... since then he has been reactive. This happened right on ban.... so I didn't have the chance to retrain and reassure my dog with the help from the prong.
I haven't been able to walk him since 2022...
He still heels fine... but once another dog is seen...
It is just impossible. He is incredibly strong. I just can't do it...
He slips collars, and if he had a harness on I'd be dragging behind him if he caught eye of another dog...
He has about 3 years left in him... i dont want to keep him behind a gate for the rest of his life.
Ps. My maremma was a rescue. Due to be put down by my uncle as a pup as he was not showing any signs of being useful. So I took him.
He is a good boy, he was walked daily, trained so well for a maremma.

@@Whoismyname999 You can’t completely stop the usage of aversive tools, people will get their hands on them no matter what. By banning them you are just encouraging the importation of lower quality products and the usage of legal but more dangerous aversive equipment. In the end you do more harm then good

    • @Whoismyname999

@@charka9732 yes, they can. In Sweden it’s a law against them luckily and you see no one using those torture collar. No trainers use them either because they’re against them too.

@@Whoismyname999 You using the word “torture collar” just shows how uneducated you are about how this tool works. Something being banned doesn’t make it bad, in some countries it’s illegal to hold hands in public, doesn’t make this law right. Drugs are illegal in Sweden too and yet there’s a booming business for them. Just last summer I took a flight to Sweden to visit some friends with a luggage full of prong collars, didn’t get arrested, didn’t get a fine and didn’t get them confiscated. Sold and gifted them, there are plenty of people, trainers and clubs in Sweden using them, they just hide them and simply don’t talk about it. People will use these collars no matter what, so instead of making useless laws that just encourage people to smuggle in lower quality products and turn to legal tools like choke collars that have a higher chance of injury, let people train however they want

No trainers use them? Which trainers? I'll tell you: trainers of mangy border collies, shelties and other sensitive pet dogs. And then they think that because they work with such unworthy dogs, which are not dogs anymore, but just substitute objects of care and affection in place of a kids, everybody should train worthy, high drive and dominant dogs like this.
We train and breed different dogs. Dogs that could be trained only positive are bad dogs for us, because they are too weak in great majority of cases to endure the hardships of police, army, IPO or PSA work.
These dogs don't take correction as a cruelty, and the prove is their vigorous and joyful work, which is also an important criterion to be successful in these sports.
So, kindly fuck off with these stories of cruelty and ignorance of "bad" trainers who don't know their job.
We know positive reinforcement training profoundly because we use it everyday to preserve as much power in our dogs as possible.
People like you are responsible for deaths of millions of dogs every year, who get euthanized because positive only trainers can't rehabilitate them.
And your country is no exception. I have friends there and they tell me a totally different story, which you don't want to hear.
And believe me, dogs in your country are still trained with prong or e collars. Because people are taking the risk and always will, because they really love their dogs.
I personally would rather go to prison, than allow my dog to bite a child, kill an animal, or cause a traffic accident because I couldn' t control him.
These are sad times indeed: every idiot can comment everything.
And before you try to answer me: I train dogs for 36 years, professionally. We tried everything: and still use aversives. So I shit on you and your uninformed opinion.
