In 1914, in the early days of World War I, Savić was awarded her first Karađorđe Star with Swords after the Battle of Kolubara. She received her second Karađorđe Star (with Swords) after the Battle of the Crna Bend in 1916 when she captured 23 Bulgarian soldiers single-handedly.
She was awarded the French Légion d’Honneur (Legion of Honour) twice, as well as the Russian Cross of St. George, the British medal of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael, and the Serbian Miloš Obilić medal. She was the sole female recipient of the French Croix de Guerre 1914-1918 with the gold palm attribute for service in World War I.

Man I totally agree. I’ve been a fan of Sabaton for a very long. But only last couple of years did I realize they are not just a catchy power metal band with a war gimmick. They are like skalds or Bards in olden times singing the deeds of heroes around the fire. They keep our collective story alive. I really believe they should be recognized as more than just a band

    Hello 'OldSkuleNerd' from Serbia.
I want to help you better understand the symbolism of the soldier giving her the flag. As a symbol of Serbia's defense, he shows her that she deserves it. Because at that time in Serbia it was illegal for women to participate in battles. He gives her the flag and tells her, "You are a soldier," acknowledging her as his equal. Side by side with the most elite soldiers. Besides, she really took her brother's place. When they came to mobilize him, she secretly registered under the male name of Milun Savić. She cut her hair and put on a man's uniform, also, she was a really big girl. She fought like this for about a year, when in 1913 she was wounded in the chest in the Battle of Bregalnica in the Second Balkan War. At the hospital, they discovered that volunteer Milun Savić is actually a girl. Later, she was still allowed to fight in battles because she had already proven her bravery and skills. She was promoted to the rank of corporal. And in this battle at Kolubara, she was already a sergeant.

There's another bit of Milunka's story that I find impressive too.
At one point she captured a group of Bulgarian soldiers, one of who was so impressed by her that after the war, he sent his eldest son, who was in a military academy at the time, to see her so she could teach him how to be a proper soldier.

Also worth to mention, she was wounded 9 times. And she went to war in place of her brother due for recruitment. While WW1 "officially" began in Sarajevo, Kolubara was also the first allied victory in WW1 that showed allies that victory is possible if small Serbia decimated great Austrian army.
Later on, at the end of war Thessalonica/Solun front sealed the faith of Reich, with Serbian infantry 2 days ahead of French calvary fixing south front.

    @123456782764 Год назад +26

    I quote: (Adolfo Lerito)
''There’s something that everybody should know, in order to better appreciate this song.
Serbia before WW1 was inhabited by more or less between 3.4 million people. During the War, the ranks of the Serbian Army swelled up to 712.005 regulars, plus 55.800 Serbian and Montenegrin volunteers from abroad who came back to Serbia as Austria invaded it. Of those men, 402.435 died during the war.
Maybe it didn’t register, so I’ll be more specific: between 50% to almost 60% of ALL THE SOLDIERS fighting in the Serbian Army LOST THEIR LIVES during World War One (it’s not clear of those 55.800 volunteers are included in the count or not, hence the fork).
If that wasn’t massive enough, another 700.000 to 850.000 Serb civilians died during the course of the war, for a grand total of 1.100.000 to 1.250.000 Serbs dying during World War One on a population of more or less 3.4 to 3.5 million people.
That’s roughly ONE THIRD of ALL the population of Serbia dying, between military and civilians, which by the end of the war accounted for a little bit less than HALF of the adult male population, and still is the highest casualty rate for any nation during World War One.
This is how much Serbia is worth to Serbs.
    THIS.
And for this, as a foreigner, I can have nothing, and I mean NOTHING but the utmost respect.''

After her recovery she was at the briefing in the ten-hut stance and they wanted to transfer her to be a nurse. She asked to be sent back to her regiment. Officer told her ok but i have to ask superiors for permission and response will be in a day. She responded short Ill wait, standing still... Officer let her stand like that for an hour and than he told her to go back to her regiment.

The best part about Sabaton isn't just the fact that they write about historically accurate events and people, it isn't even about how they do so without glorifying war.
It's their ability to create an emotional bond between the listener and their music by telling a story in five minutes or even sooner with their historic versions no matter how sad or uplifting the subject matter may be which sticks with you. Some you're familiar with, a lot you may not be. They can even make you feel that way about a warship. Twice.
    They're masters of their craft.

In the second season of "Shadows over Balkan" (a.k.a. Black Sun) one of the characters was inspired by her. The character was depicted at living in back then an infamous shoddy area of Belgrade, which was actually near to where she actually lived after both WWI and WWII.

We don't learn about these stories in Europe either. Unless our country is involved directly we only learn about key moments in the grand scale of things. Our countries are so old that even huge events like WW1 is almost treated like footnotes. As a swede its even worse since we were fortunate enough to avoid all wars post 1814 (sorry Norway). I think I know a lot more about the battles during the 30year war than any specific battle in WW1 or 2. I would celebrate 200+ years of peace If it wasn't paid for with the blood of our neighbour's.

I am quite new to your channel and so I must admit I've made a few assumptions. But if you are American and interested in war history, do you know of Margraten? It's the memorial and burial ground for American WW2 soldiers in the Netherlands.
I just wanted to tell you about it because I have noticed not many Americans know about it.

Milosh Obilich (Miloš Obilić) gold medal for bravery. Miloš Obilić is a Serbian knight in 1389 who with his comrades killed the leader of the Turkish Ottoman army in camp at Kosovo and was almost immediately killed sacrificing his life in a suicide mission.

Dear, Serbs fighted in WW1 BEFORE and not After Yugoslavia was Bor. Kolubara and other things mentioned here NEVER were in Bosnia and Hercegovina, Ultimate disrespect for this woman and values that she stood for. Especialy as you are an old school.Cer and Kolubara are still in Serbia And everybody here know who she is. Reccomnation - listen to Sabaton Last Dying Breath .That is about defence of Belegrade 1915.Americans are so uneducated that you do not , pehaps know difference in Serbia or Siberia
