  • Follow along as I go from an adventure catching gorgeous cutthroat trout on the fly rod in the backcountry of eastern Washington State, to my wood shop as I carve an exact 1:1 replica of a fish from the trip.
My Catch-2-Carve series takes me around my home state of Washington chasing a new species of fish in each installment, all with the fly rod in a beautiful setting. The result: a handmade, one-of-a-kind art piece to remember special times with friends, and along the way I'll share some tips and tricks to help you with creating your own carvings!

Jameson, I love your work. Your detailing and skill are superb. That said, though I love the wavy background on your mount (your signature?), which is an idea that I plan to steal by the way, it is my opinion that your trout looks a little naked in that box. I guess I am saying that the mount looks unfinished. If your intention of the mount is to create a water visual with the fish swimming up towards the surface, then the base of the mount would be the bed of the stream. It's just my 2 cents, for what it is worth. This comment is not an insult to you, just a comment for you to think about.
Also, I use resins a fair bit in some of my carvings and I don't think encasing the fish would necessarily add anything. However, you could do is a miniature to find out. Make a 2-3 inch fish (rough), and encase it in resin. If you made the resin in an abstract chunk (not a geometric shape), it might look pretty cool. I'd keep the resin clear or almost clear though. Best wishes.

It’s funny, my wife said almost the exact thing about the fish up against the carver water background too! It’s totally a good note though, and that back panel was actually a first for me with that effect. And no, it’s not my original concept either, as I saw it somewhere on Instagram and wanted to give it a shot.
I really like the idea of a resin-cast and also agree that a smaller test should be in order as a proof of concept before going all-in on a full-size carving. Thanks for the feedback, Dan!

@@RiverbendWoodworks You're welcome! I thought I saw you use the water affect on another carving. A base maybe. I might be mistaken.

I’ve been searching how to do fish wood carvings, it would be my first attempt but I’m a bit apprehensive now because I saw how much went into a 10” trout and I wanna do a 5 1/2 ft tarpon 😳. But there are other techniques such as using a chainsaw to take away the bulk and shaping without having to by a bandsaw and doing wood burning to define scales and intricate work , but your the inspiration that helps drive other sportsmen to try and do a dream trophy carving without braking the bank , great video beautiful carving , geez now I gotta go find a piece of dam wood ! 👍🏼

Thanks for watching, Dave, and for something the size of a tarpon you can totally do it from wood, but I would like to suggest you take a look at my video series where I made a life-size tiger shark from basic foam. Two sheets of foam, a little bit of hard coat (you can apply with a brush!) and some sanding, and you'll have a life-size, handmade tarpon for a fraction the cost (and a fraction of the weight!). Working with foam is very similar to wood, but if you make any error you can literally just glue on more foam and get back to work! Thanks again for watching, and please share your creation with my on my Instagram channel, @riverbend_woodworks

@@RiverbendWoodworks , thanks that’s a great idea ! Why didn’t I think of that , 😳 I’ve been researching recently on how to build a flats boat out of foam so I’ve gained some knowledge on working with foam and fiberglass resin , thanks for the tip and I’ll check out your vids, keep up the great content 👍🏼

Does the downdraft table do a decent job of dust catching? I rough-grind in my driveway and still get a dusting ten feet away in the garage.

It works really well, actually. The thing is only hooked to a little 537CFM collector I placed inside a cabinet, but if I hook my 1400CFM collector to it it's almost too much. Highly recommend building something like that.
