I was lucky to see them at a discotheque in Columbus, Ohio in ~June, 1980. I stood about 5 feet from Steve Morse all the time, and was able to shake his hand during intermission. I still say that was the most fulfilling concert I've ever been to. Back then, I anxiously waited for every Dregs album release and was in the record store on the exact day.

I was fortunate to see the Dixie Dregs perform live at The Paradise Theater in Boston, back in the early days! AMAZING PERFORMANCE!

This takes me back. The miracle of the electronic age is being able to go back in time and see shows that were actually in the same tour that you might have seen the band (or at a different venue). In a more recent interview, Steve Morse said that he was at his technical best during this era (in his 20s). I think he was talking about the ability to play fast because live shows from the 90s and 2000 still blow me away. John Petrucci went to a Dregs concert when he was 18 and it made him realize that he had to step up his game to take it to another level. In a recent interview, he said he still has the Steve Morse instructional tapes/manuals and he still follows that practice pattern. Back then, Steve signed an 8x10 for John and wrote "Practice" next to his signature. Steve and John are now good friends and have played together at G3 and the Dregs toured with Dream Theatre around 2000 (Dixie Dregs Live at the House of Blues). They share the same management and are both involved with Music Man; where both Steve and John have their signature guitars made. By the way, 2 of the nicest guys in the business.

Great insight! Recently saw an interview from a few years back with Steve Morse, John P., Steve Lukather, & Paul Gilbert @ an Ernie Ball booth. Good stuff!

ellokittymew I was lucky enough to see them at the, by then, about to close, Latin Casino in Camden, New Jersey around 1980. The Latin Casino was a once extremely popular club that was one of the Rat Packs hangouts through the 60's. Frank, Dean, etc. $10 dollar admission, 15 feet from the band. Awesome.

Yes, the jam between Rod and Steve that starts around the 4:00 mark with the funky part and clean guitar is awesome. They are so on the same frequency it defies description. Today, though, Steve has to wear a wrist support on his picking hand, and all tunes have to be slowed down with at least 20 BPM or something. This is great stuff though. Even I can pull of the speed he makes today without much more practice. But to keep the original speed of the original recordings of the tunes? forget it. Will not ever be able to do that, no matter how much I practice.

I saw the Dregs on Don Kirshner. I had come back from the bars and it was about 1:30 am. I was blown away! Who were these guys? I called my friends in our rock band on the phone (they were still up) and told them to turn on the set. Progressive Rock-Jazz-Mahavishnu-Country---incredible!! Saw them live at a Hotel lounge about 2 months later. They were on fire!! Great post.

Browsing through the record bins at Tower Records one day way, waaaayyyyy, waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy back in the late 70s and came across "What If". Eventually I found myself down at the old Golden Bear to see them live a couple of times. My only critique is that they tended to play a tad excessively here and there.

Steve was always so cut and in shape it's unbelievable. It must have helped him playing live. EVH was the same way what gives?

re-load the video and get it in sync please. It's a drag to watch it like this.

So sorry, video must have glitched at some point within youtube because there was never any audio sync issues when it was uploaded years ago. Unfortunately, I no longer have any copies of this saved. Sucks, but pretty sure there must be other copies of this performance floating around on youtube. At some point I may try to download the vid from here and see if it's possible to re-sync the audio on some video editing software to fix.
