Wood Carving: My Boldest Flat Plane Carve Yet

- This is my boldest attempt at flat plane carving yet. One of my goals for 2021 was to take my carving from the Beginner 1 to the Beginner 2 stage. That includes taking longer, wider, cleaner and fewer cuts. Going from cutting flakes to cutting real chips. Finishing with 2 cuts as opposed to 8 cuts. All part of what I consider to be a "better" flat plane style carver.
I hope you'll follow along. I think you'll find this style interesting and I believe you'll enjoy seeing what I have to carve today. It is part 1 of 2 as I found myself making more deliberate cuts, taking a bit more time in the process and just slowing down the pace.

its a great video Jeff i'm also looking to get in to flat plane carving and general knife only carvings improve my knife skills and control before i start but any other tools :)
I made it. You seem to be on the same journey as I (and many others) am on. The Refsal / Overby / Linker style is one I’ve always enjoyed. Not as “rustic” as Gene Messer’s work. Simple lines and nice results. Looking forward to part 2.
It's been a truly unique journey. Mine only started during the pandemic and I've seen so many wonderful carvers out there thru social media. I'm sure I've not seen many more than I have. But Overby's pieces are so crisp and clean. Still trying to decide for myself a style but I did try and recreate his in this video. Thanks for being a trooper and reading all of the description. Mostly, thanks for watching.
@JefroCarves, I made it. TBH, I probably wouldn't have read through the extended comments at all, but I was looking to try to see if it said what you are carving. I haven't watched the whole video yet, but I skimmed through it hoping to learn what it was you would be carving. FWIW, given that I don't have unlimited time, I generally want to know what the payoff of the learning exercise will be before watching the whole thing, so when there isn't a thumbnail or or representative sample of the final/finished project I usually try to scroll through until the end in order to see if the project is one I believe I would like to do and/or learn from. Perhaps this will come in part 2 tomorrow (or at least I can first scroll to the end and see your final version). I hope explaining this pattern isn't offensive - I only explain it because I hope it might help you... knowing that at least some people would be more inclined to watch the whole thing if they saw up front what you are teaching/showing us how to make. And regarding your learning journey for flat plane carving - I'm in a similar boat: trying to move from being able to achieve with a few cuts what currently takes me many cuts. Its a fun process. Thank you for posting your videos showing your progress and growth!
All very valid points. Not offensive at all!! I applaud your transparency. Before making videos, I had the same mentality. Thumbs have a very important role in keeping my interest. tbh, I would skip over any carving video that was split into more than one part. Now that I make them I can see why. Especially with this one where I am really concentrating on making meaningful cuts and it became lengthy. If I do split a video into parts, I don't like to show the finished product upfront for fear that the majority of the content will be skipped over or overlooked. This doesn't help the beginner learn and it doesn't equal view time for the video. I see it as a lose-lose situation for all. Thank you for your great comment and thanks for the scrolling/watching. hello is great you are starting off covering doing a good job I think you need a thinner knife blade. It will go through the wood much easier

Looks great ! Did you use a pattern to trace the lines on the block of wood you were using? What are the dimensions of the block ? I would really like to carve this as my first project.

I'm not sure a beginning/intermediate carver should be doing an instructional video. You might consider watching some of Doug Linker or Kevin Coates videos. Just a suggestion. Cheers.
Hi! Great work! Thank you very much! I notice the large knife you use is very thick, making it difficult to do flat plane carving (not impossible). Just IMHO...
You're absolutely right Kent. But I use what I have. I typically use my Flexcut for all of my 1" x 1" carves but I tried something a little different on this one. I do really need a smaller detail knife than the Flexcut as well. Someday. Thanks for watching!
