the problem with apex is fixed matchmaking and sbmm. they purposely put decent players in matches they are unlikely to win then give them a bot lobby every couple of matches. they dont realize people will quit after 7 games of getting rolled before they get that fixed "win"
Where are these bot lobbies? I didn’t play for multiple years and first game on was with 10k kill players. I legit play 2-3 games and turn it off. My kd this season 0.6 my lifetime kd is 0.8 so why am I getting in these lobbies with master/pred players? I have to try and play on 150-180 ping to play on Oregon lobbies to have some slight hope. Even deathmatch games my team looses by 15-20 kills the majority of the time. There is matchmaking but whatever metrics they’re using is just wrong and average Joe will just turn it off. Either brand new with legit bots or hardcore 3 stack rolling the lobbies the vast majority of players get screwed over
Literally what i just noticed last 2-3 days .. I get killed only by people that have like 40k + kills , 5k+ kills this season or people with 20 bombs , masters or pred. I turn the game on and turn it off not even 1h in nowadays :D
I moved onto smite because of how shitty this game has become. I hate it because I really have to TRY to be there in apex for me to play. I hate it now.
I haven't played in a long time, but I remember that the matchmaking was like putting an all star nba team against a bunch of random 12 year olds that have never played basketball before
Honestly, I've had enough. I have 11k kills in my career, but I've never gotten the 4k damage and 20 kill badge, and that's pretty much the only people who kill me all the time. I feel like I'm a bot playing against such people, and I'm still in such a lobby. This game is starting to make no sense and I'm considering quitting it permanently.
regardless of the game population getting better, the game just feels really sweaty in general... Like u said, getting into pubs is a TASK for me, it gets really boring because I just keep dying to sweaty ass three stacks when I SUCK at the game. I shouldn't even be playing against the players that kill me
As someone who took a year long break, it feels really bad still. I quit because of the pred 3 stacks every single game. I understand stuff changes, but sweating every game when I wanna do fun/stupid stuff with my buddy is nigh impossible bc I have to carry him(and a random low level usually). I've never gotten past plat4, I get why I'd fight diamond players every game but 3 stack preds/masters, and people ximming out the wazoo? Makes it hard to enjoy apex
is this true? me and 3 friends have played 1-3 apex seasons before and all of us have under 150 hours. This season we got dia, with no ratting or anything so I'm confused as to how you're finding it so hard
I am not getting Pred 3 stacks and i am now in Plat 2... I killed people who had the Masters banner on their box and i was killed by a guy with pred banner but he wasn't 3 stacking. . But if you never soloQ maybe you should try.. When i go with my low skill friend we get masters way often..I did diamond like 6 times befoe s17 since s17 i didn't really tried. Now i started trying that's why i am at plat 2 but only have few hours till split. lol... I don't think i'm gonna make it. xD I got plat 2 with 265 ish games. Which is not great but not that horrible either i saw a guy getting Diamond with 900+ games xD
The overall player skill has slowly creeped up to the point that an average player today would be a super sweat 5 years ago. I remember taking beating after beating trying to learn this game when I started (season 5) and I couldn't even imagine trying to start fresh now. I played solos for several hours last night and I could count on one hand the number of easy fights I got into. Then on top of that I felt bad about killing those people because it was obvious they didn't know what they were doing. Then the other 100+ 1v1s I got into felt like the fight of my life. I don't mind locking it in and going hard sometimes, but having to sit up straight with my face 3 inches away from the screen to even be competitive for hours at a time is exhausting. With that being said I think the crowd of casual players that would get on wanting to just relax after work/school and never really took the game seriously are long gone. The way I see it for myself is I need to keep playing FPS somewhat consistently so when the next big game drops I'll be ready. If we ever see a big launch like Fortnite, Apex, ect.. then you got maybe 6 months to get in there and make a name for yourself. Take any longer than that and you missed the boat.
It’s because match making has killed average players. Why does anyone want to spend more time loading into a game then being alive in it? I played from a few months after launch and it always felt like I had a chance now I’m lucky to get 2 bullets to hit before I’m killed. I’m shit I know I’m shit so why the F am I going against 3 stack master/pred squads every game? I legit play 2-3 games and turn it off.

As someone who hops game to game mastering the mechanics , I agree people are a lot better but most of them still have horrible FPS habits that you can exploit in each FPS title .
I imagine another huge issue for player retention is the large number of legends/abilities and weapons now. I remember how overwhelming it was back in season 3 with only 11 legends and a pretty new player base. Now we have 26 Legends and a bunch more guns with unique features as well as the legend perk and evo shield system. Couple this with the incredibly sweaty player base and it's no wonder new players don't stick around.

After every single win in ranked I get straight up thrown with 2 bots who just drop me hot into other 7 squads of bots and we instadie like not giving me even 350rp for a 10+kp win in garbage plat lobbies wasn't already miserable enough, they just want to have some rp cashback on top of it like i haven't earned it sweating the shit out in previous game.
SBMM in general is what is killing the game to casuals and new players. Ranked should be the only playlist that has strict SBMM. Also, I think the lack of content is what Apex suffers with as well. A lot of BR games try to implement GAAS but won't put in the effort like Fortnite dropping new content and skins at a rapid pace. Don't see a lot of folks mention that Apex is still plagued by loot boxes and locks the best skins/heirlooms behind a random paywall.
@@theswagger5386 I might be wrong. But that's just my personal experience. I think in recent months, it's just not there, at least not on the Q. Maybe there are just noobs Q, and then the rest of us, that's about it. I think they prioritise Q times over actual skill now. It's like the first 60 are qued together and then based on some kind of skill match teams, but it doesn't split qs into several separate qs. Technically, there is SBMM when it comes to creating teams, but there is no SBMM when splitting into separate matches unless there is only one noob level for entirely new players based on other factors but not skill. I'm not sure if I make much sense here. SBMM for splitting qs was there last year or so, but not now.
its NOT SBMM. if there would be a proper SBMM you wouldnt face too strong or weak players. What you guys talk about in the game is EOMM. Thats a huge difference if you look it up, its meant to "keep" players queuing by giving them an easy lobby after losing multiple harder games so you "theoretically" get a confidence boost after shtting on newbies just to get shat on
I've had a love/hate relationship with this game for a long time now. I've put 1000 hours in since release playing nothing but solo queue ranked. (Never really played pubs). I usually play just enough to get diamond/masters each split/season and I do have to say.. It is getting way harder. Especially the last few seasons. my k/d is only 1.4 since I only queue solo ranked but I get matched with 3 stack preds almost every game. Not to mention the amount of cheaters. Holy God. My friends have never been able to join me because they play the game for a little while and realize how much of a skill gap there is and quit. It might be me or it might be the game but either way, it's getting harder and harder to log into this game now.
Literally I am in the exact same situation as you, I havent even played the last 3 days because I stopped caring, because I have put enough time in to say that its not worth my mental health to endure the punishment of simply playing Apex Legends. So sad. 5.5 thousand hours
I'm thinking about quitting too,it's just not fun anymore.Balancing school and work just takes a lot out of me and when I want to unwind and have fun this game gives me the opposite experience and makes my mental worse.I love the gameplay but there's so many issues that haven't been fixed and they continue to make the game worse. And then to top it off,some players are downright awful,I literally mute everyone now because of it,so toxic.
I hate it also I started during season 0 before the game even had seasons it was fun left for a few years because of bad WiFi I got great WiFi now All of a sudden everybody playing aggressive for reason and I can’t keep up
Feels like there is no winning. As a ranked only player there is never a good time to play. Start of the season is just everyone on the same rank. Mid season the smurfs come out and before end of split the late rankers and smurfs make it almost impossible to get a game with people of your rank.
I have noticed a difference in the games the later in the season. I don't play as often as your average player so I think I'm a kind of smurf in the later season because I've been steadily increasing my rank all season just not as fast as other players and I always end up playing against and with players that don't seem as good as me by the end of the split.
what you explained in this video is the biggest reason i quitted this game I loved. I honestly feel better mentally after quitting because I play some solo games now and ppl should do the same

100% agree. I’ve been saying this for many seasons. If you play duos as a stack you play against other stacks. If you’re playing pubs as a stack you play against other stacks regardless of skill level. If you play solo duo/trio you get into a pool on randoms to make ur team
Great video. I’ve “studied” (if you can call it that) matchmaking on Apex for like 5 years at this point. I’ve done this across 6-7 different accounts (with each account trying to achieve different MMRs). All of my tests were done in pubs. My take aways have been: -Matchmaking is indeed a ladder. The top of this ladder is comprised of lobbies who are typically all 4k 20 bomb pred level players. -MMR decay is real. Not playing for a bit lowers your MMR. This is why your first game isn’t as sweaty. -Accounts with lots of “data” (kills, wins, damage, etc) tend to go down the ladder slower than accounts with less data. So on my main account (99k kills) I need to have MORE poor performances to get an easier lobby, than I would on an account with less experience. This is problematic because it creates a “valley” that people can fall into and feel stuck. There are a lot of people who have been playing a few years and are above average- these players will constantly be playing in lobbies of the top 3% and it can feel grueling. Being above average but losing more BECAUSE you are above average does not feel good.
I tried to get into Apex like three times in the past few years and I just couldn't ever. People are so insanely sweaty in that game while I barely know where to go or how to shoot, I thought ranked would fix that issue but nope not at all, doesn't make a damn difference if I play at my broze rank or if I play quick match. And this is coming from a person that loves competitive games, I have thousands of hours in CS, Valorant and Siege combined, but the main difference between these games and Apex is that these games did let me play against people on roughly my level and I got to actually shoot some people, hit some (even if basic) clips and feel the sense of progression, whereas in Apex I'm just getting stomped every single time I see an enemy. There's only so many times before you just say "screw it I don't wanna run for 15 minutes just to get lasered by a dude"
Totally agree with this. I played a pubs game yesterday and ended up with two teammates who were playing their 7th game of Apex ever. We ended up dying to a pred with 30k on horizon.
yea, honestly no idea why i play this game but i do. every game is very competitive and i always die to people with 20b 4k, despite being nowhere close that skill level myself. i barely have 3ks on two characters lmao. it’s just crazy, ive always thought that the low player base is to blame, like the lack of players at my skill level on my servers etc etc, but i’ve been saying that even 2-3 years ago, which the game was definitely more alive back then. it’s just going more and more downhill, less players, less casuals and the only players sticking around are the ones actually good at the game. often times i find it hard to even get a single kill or two in a game. i’m around level 550~ and it’s so hard to enjoy the game….. the content and friends i have are the only reason i touch it. probably will end up quitting it again
I am player who actively play couple of seasons and usually end season around platinum 3. I was very excited when they announcements Solo Game Mode. In one of my first game i had 8 kills and around 2k dmg so i have hope for my first 20 kills game. However in my future games i always dies from pred/master or 20 kills badge player. Usually end game with max 3/4 kill, very frustrating. Basiclly one decent game and my lobby is unpleyable to this day.
Respect to you for trying out the game this season despite it being so sweaty. Hopefully you stick around...new players are always welcome. Just wish you guys were treated better by the matchmaking.
I would say that I’m a similar skill to you, I get about a 20 bomb or something close every week or so playing an hour or 2 a day. I agree that the new player experience is horrible, but as a more advanced player I can ubderstand why I’m in high skill lobbies so I don’t really have a problem with that. What I’ve been doing is not playing ranked at the start of the season and then making my way up later to a get a more chill experience in the game where I don’t have to sweat like crazy to do decent
I noticed it too, I am getting put up with with preds every 10th game, and masters every other game. Highest I ever got was gold, so I have no idea why mm is like this for me. My average dmg is now 600 instead of the 1000 like before, and I don't get to even play half my games cuz I get melted by a beam. Instead of playing 15-20 games a day, I now play 8-10 cuz I don't have the patience because I get so mad that I constantly have to face 3 stacks who work smartly by 3 man rushing 1 person at a time. And it seems like I get team mates that are either as bad as me, or worse which doesn't help at all.
Finally, someone who agrees this game has EOMM. The amount of times I got shot down for suggesting Apex has it is crazy. My experience had always been drop in and survive for 5 mins if I'm lucky, then RIGHT when I'm about to quit or say "Last game for me" suddenly I'm in a much fairer lobby where I can perform well yet still have some risks. Then after that win it's right back to dealing with sweats. On the rare occassion I'll have a string of easy games though. Respawn has always denied the existence of EOMM but it's there and you have to be blind not to see it. As a season 0 vet who quit playing for almost 2 years. You're right, people have gotten better but people have also stopped playing. The problem is SBMM doesn't know how to handle this. It doesn't know how to create fair and balanced lobbies. Add in people using CFGs and Aim Assist (it's soft aimbot, deal with it), then it becomes even harder. I don't blame people who get better at the game organically, I blame the system for putting those players in my matches when I'm nowhere near their level. A lot of shooters deal with this snowball effect. A new shooter comes out and it's fun for a while as people learn the ropes. Then a few players drop off after the wanderlust phase while others stay and get better, this creates a bridge gap on the skill curve until eventually less casuals are playing and less newer players are joining. This is where SBMM breaks because it is now struggling to find players around your skill level. Another issue is how quickly Apex wants to get you into a game so that you keep playing, only problem is you're being thrown into an absolute mess of a lobby. I know this comparison has been done to death, but I'm going to bring up Fortnite especially because of no-build. The new player experience in Fortnite was a breath of fresh air, it doesn't chuck you into the deep end and expect you to learn how to swim. And even when the new player protection wears off, you're still not facing people who are gods at the game. I was reluctant to play it because I'm no good at builiding, but as soon as I heard about no-build me and my friend who is also an ex Apex player jumped in and we had a blast! Does it take a bit longer to get into games? Yes, but it means that matchmaking has time to think and get us into a decent lobby. Losing in Apex feels like you're gone in the blink of an eye and didn't stand a chance. Losing in Fortnite feels like you just weren't as good and your aim could have been better. It's easy to see which game handles SBMM and new players better.
I wish respawn would watch this video. As an above average player I avoid pubs like the plague. It leaves me with the worst feeling of no matter how hard I try I will get stomped 4 out of 5 matches. The 5th match being the pitty match the game gives me for getting destroyed the prior 4. Then after I do good that one match it’s another 4 matches of getting smacked. And it’s a shame because if Apex wasn’t like this it would hands down be my favorite FPS. It has so much potential but “casual” does not exist anymore. Back in the Halo 3 days and original modern warfare games we had casual FPS games where you could sit back and not sweat to hard and still enjoy yourself to the point of playing for 10 hours straight and not getting burnt out. Also this whole SBMM thing literally throws the concept of a ranked mode in the trash. The way it used to be was if you want to play people of your skill level you play ranked. And if you wanted a more varied and casual experience you play pubs. Of course even in pubs you would occasionally still play against “try-hards” but all the fun matches in between made occasionally getting smacked worth it. But now for me pubs is more sweaty than ranked which literally makes zero sense lol I could rant about this forever.
this is how i felt after 3 months of not playing. when i got back, i felt SOOO slow, and out played. after some time i kinda got back to it but still felt like everyone is way better now.
yea I rarely boot up the game maybe once every month to jump on with some friends and even in silver ranked lobbys i get masters players really puts a damper on the game tbh
Matchmaking is the main reason that I cannot enjoy the game no matter how much I try to remain positive or how well I try to play, it's also why I quit. I don't have it in me to support this game anymore

Bro you are so right with this topic. I quit playing apex season 21 three weeks after launch because I got so fed up of constantly getting slammed. Also with this matchmaking it feels impossible to progress at all. I have 1.5k games played lifetime and my total wins in br are 38. I put in the effort and time to get better, but it doesnt matter because i can't compete with pred three stacks.
Got on and while I have 1-2 4ks ever and I was okay at it got on for the first time seriously in months with the mindset of practicing i gave up after 3 games I die so fast even in solos that I cannot play without homies anymore it’s just not fun
Like this discussion and I agree 💯 % I think if you get in a lobby with preds as new players. there should be a bounty system for everyone in the game to collect and kill them and show where they are near in the map ? Maybe it’s stupid but just a thought
For the 20 bombs, I got one recently and once past a certain skill ceiling, it's all luck (need 80% of your fight to be easy, KC or Olympus being the current map, lucky third parties, team that doesn't steal your kills and everyone to just jump on you for no reason 1 by 1) and if you fumble that game, you'll have your chance in another 1000 games from now it's ridiculous
its not just apex it feels like every game is like this the days are gone where I can just hop on and just have fun if im not constantly playing perfect for the win I literally dont get to play the game at all

Maybe I am weird, but I love crazy difficult games, dropping hot, and the mess that it becomes, specifically now in quads, for me it is just a blast, to be able to survive those 3-6 teams that have landed hot with you, is the best of the game.
As someone who has played since season 1 and a decent player, the current state of the game is something else. I'm the same as you, it's so frustrating to try and play and get destroyed by stacked teams, cheaters or getting stuck with teammates who want to hot drop on ranked, die and then get mad about it. There needs to be more balance to keep long time players on, and not scare away new players. I can imagine trying to get better as a new player in 2024, learn the mechanics...but be killed all the time by much better players.
I agree with this commentary for sure. I'm so confused at the people in charge of matchmaking... Getting the most amount of players on your game should be as simple as making a great game that people enjoy. Why are they trying to quantize the players? It takes away almost all of the reward for putting time into a game; the harder you try, the harder your daily experience gets. Thats exactly how to make people give up on the game, or just start cheating because somehow that became a realistic option for so many apex players. There should be more randomness in terms of what percentile of any stat/overall playtime you have a chance at running into. New players should be protected but they should also get a taste of what it takes to be a good apex player by consistently interacting with more experienced players, but long term players with 1K plus hours should earn the reward of being above average and should succeed slightly more often than they did starting off. Bc right now if you have decent stats, you die to pros and streamers on a daily/weekly basis even though you have only met that level of gameplay on your very best day/week of playing the game. Not to mention, being on mnk (because its truly more immersive and enjoyable, and because movement mechanics are fun and rewarding to learn) just makes things 40% harder since 40% of damage taken was likely due to a computer program and not one of your competitors. Even if they don't rework matchmaking I at least wish they could make private matches similar to rocket league/fortnite so I can practice movement or do small matches with my friends since I don't have 32 homies who would agree to play the game
While I have zero interest in playing XDefiant- I hope their stance on sbmm becomes the norm. Everyone playing these FPS is complaining about SBMM when they solo queue or try a new game like these examples, but the people who choose to keep sbmm in the game pretend we just don't know what we want and complain for the sake of it.
My single biggest problem right now is that there is zero punishment for abandoning a pubs match early. I am sick and tired of being top 3 after first ring close. I'm tired of teammates disconnecting after just being downed. They're not even dead just downed. And every other team in my match does it too. Everyone disconnects causing players that would normally stick around keeping multiple teams alive to dwindle. When I first started playing you had a 10 minute penalty. You could revive your teammates you could clutch but now if you don't hard carry and I mean babysit the daylights out of them so they don't perish then they are guaranteed to leave. If you don't hot drop in a pubs game then you will not see a single squad until top 3. There won't be any left after the first 3 minutes and that is my experience with every game. I want to get some badges on the new legends yet I can't because it feels like I drop into an empty lobby unless my randos actually decide to be near the hot drop. In that case I have a bit more fun but you still have the issue of every other team disconnecting as they go down too.

Not sure if you’ll see this, but you can permanently remove optics in mixtape modes! Go into the weapon selection menu and middle click on any loadout and you can choose your optic or just remove it.
So personally I go through big gaps of not playing. Part of what causes this is because it feels so hard to improve because there's sweats at every corner no matter the level. I'm tired of playing with preds before I'm ready to deal with them lol. So yes, just agree there's definitely a matchmaking issue
Typically, I don't comment on "complaint" videos, but I certainly agree with your points. I took an 8-month hiatus and just got back onto apex to tons of sweat lobbies. I started playing the game on 2nd day of release and am half decent, I'm no match against the average lobby. Everyone who kills me has the flashiest banner with ungodly amounts of elims. I'm nowhere near as good to be placed in lobbies with them, yet each match I am getting my ass handed to me on a silver platter. The argument of insufficient players of my skill is certainly valid and might never be solved, as the community grows to be better and better each day. It's just a vicious cycle lmao.
Going through the same stuff right now I am around the masters level of skill and I feel like if I don't sweat my ass off, I die off drop every game and having teammates that can't think for themselves doesn't help when I'm going against three stack predator teams
Your 100% right I did this awhile ago to try and get a buddy into Apex and I was gonna grind it out with him till he was competent so he could solo Q his way up the skill gap. I made fresh everything and threw, then I was gonna intentionally not sweat and play bad let him lead ect. and just give advice. after the placement matches or whatever the lobbies were very similar to if I was on my main which has like 4.5k hours into it. There is also 100% engagement built into then SBMM if you notice your first two games of the day you are very likely to have minimum 1 solid team mate as good or better than you so you do well and wanna keep playing. I have averaged like 4.5 hours a day for the last two and half years and there are so many conspiracies I have about the match making especially pubs its really not very good anymore as a solo its a rough experience.
i was playing some team deathmatch today and i was using Rev and prowler and I was doing pretty well, pubs haven't been the easiest but for some reason I've been doing quite well in solos despite me not liking the solos format. But i remember when it was season 5 or 6 when i was like "everyone is sweating", and it kept getting worse and worse from there, but now unlike before killing masters and preds is easier then ever before because they're so common
my main account is literally unplayable. i often get completely rolled now by enemy players and yet i get players on my team that are clearly lower skill level. i cannot have a chance at top 5 unless im popping off and winning fights i normally shouldnt. its been like this for 2 seasons now ish. right now its at its worst.
Heres the issue, strict SBMM is simply ranked. If you enforce strict SBMM no one will have a good experience, everyone will just have a mediocre experience where improvement isnt rewarded as ur enemies simply get harder, at least in ranked you get elo. This is why SBMM as a concept in pubs is flawed. I think they should remove sbmm in its entirety from pubs. The majority of the player base is mediocre to "bad" players. It removes the need for high skill players to smurf to have fun (which ruins pubs) and lower skilled players will eventually have luck on their side to win as their opponents are just random. Higher skilled player would win more, lower skilled player would win less, but no one would be stuck in any ridiculous loop. Preds wont make new accs or seek new exploits to pub stomp. Starting off is going to be really hard in a really hard game, thats just the reality of it. Its how gaming has been until warzone and apex came along and we had sbmm, and yet the match making experience is somehow worse than old cod, cs 1.6, pubg etc. We can have an optional below lv50 queue tho.
I’m around lvl 30 in apex and it sucks because I’m trying to get better but I get lobbies with lvl 200+ player and I will die to someone lower then level 100 1/20 games it feels like I started mostly playing mixtape games and even in half those games I would go against apex predators and people with thousands of kills making it hard to have fun even titanfall has better matchmaking then this and it’s annoying as hell going up against g100 pilots but it happens less then apex
I feel you,I'm a veteran player and even I'm having trouble keeping up,there is always preds in mixtape and normal pubs now(mixtape is not fun anymore,I played when it was really fun)I recommend you get into communities online where veterans are willing to help newer players out because other than that it will get really difficult for you.The skill gap in this game is huge and you will start to notice it quickly.If you have friends who are good then that's even better,if you don't then you're basically screwed now 😭
Best thing they can do about it is add Three Strikes back as a permament mode / replacing current form of pubs with a modified version of Three Strikes. Then they could even lower the SBMM on lobbies, cause no one is gonna care that much about it when you have 2 lives.
I really hate this game. Most of my games are me throwing because my teammates either drop super hot and die instantly, or they drop at the other end of the map to loot all game.

My cousin has played to plat a few times now, I never have, I’m not a ranked player never have been. But I have played since day 1 I have an old account. but he swears up and down that only when he plays with me literally the only thing we die to is 20 bomb four ks and whole pred squads, and it’s like lobby’s full of em. It’s so bad for me and I have no idea why, I’m starting to think I’m getting punished for being an old player or something
Well I’m on Xbox so I’m in Console lobbies and I just past the 100 Day mark on play time on this game. I just got my first 4k damage Badge on pathfinder Recently. Im hard stuck plat at the moment my aim is really good but my positioning still needs a little bit of work and my communication needs a lot of work I don’t talk at all to my teammates . But I 100% agree with you on your Statement Three stacks Against other three stacks And solo against other solos That would make the game so much more balance!!! And fun , yeah I might have to wait a little bit longer but at least I won’t die to a three stacks over and over when I’m solo
I started playing for the first time last week and I got wiped every game in solos. Even in trios I was teamed with beginners like myself trying to face off against 3 stack predators or seasoned players. I already uninstalled, but I keep wondering if its even worth getting better💀
It is ridiculous I get teammates who are always gold, bronze, silver players. And I'm against people who are masters or predators. My highest ranked was masters. Now my lobbies are awful. And I feel like I'm being punished for being a above average players. I'm now stuck in platinum in ranked.
A lot of people do not understand the problem is server population, there is not enough people in the 3+ kd range for them to have their own lobbies so they get put with everyone else, no change will eliminate the fact that there isnt enough people on the game
There are a few thoughts I've had about Apex and about games in general. First, Apex is never going to have another discovery period again. That was the least sweaty/easiest time to play the game because everyone is trying out and learning the game, so there's no real meta strats out there or practiced people to run into. As for SBMM, while it is a problem, the way I see it is it isn't the sole contributor to the whole pub stomper problem with Predators stacks in normal lobbies. You have to consider the size of the lobby, and it is pretty much inherent to every BR. 60 people to a lobby all within the same division is never going to be successful even half the time, and only gets worse the higher you get. Considering region, time, player count, player rank, queue time, and a multitude of other things, a Predator ranked player is going to see queue times well into a better part of a hour before filling that queue. So the MM system expands the queue parameters until they end up in the avg silver/gold lobby and become the dreaded pub stomper that people post on Reddit asking "why is this guy in my lobby"
As a new player to fps all together... it was rough early on. But I spent my time in the firing range. I'm at about 650 hours now and am able to consistently get 70+ in my ranked matches. I reached gold finally and am just about to get reset. It's fun, but not as fun when you find a group of people that want to be consistently learning about the game.
I think there are more newer players than it seems. When I land hot in solo's it is all people with 10k+ kills and 20 bombs and just the sweatiest people, but when you get past this onslaught most of the rest of the game is just lower level players who didn't land hot just trying to play the game instead of die in 30 seconds. I am just an average player, I get hard stuck plat every season solo q'ing, it's like I get below average players the entire way up to gold, then mid plat is where I get all former masters and 20 bomb players. Those lower rank games has these actual newer players which will sometimes surprise me how tf they managed to get here. I will always suspect they are cheating to then it is obvious they are real. It is really just pubs that make the sbmm terrible for the new player. But if this new player is a controller player...it's not as much a skill gap to learn. As well, there are many content creators that don't look that good to me. They have like 40k kills and if I would die to them I would think God why is this guy in my lobby, he obviously is so much better than me, but I watch these people and they are mildly above average at best, the amount of time someone plays doesn't equal skill. Also, a master's badge doesn't mean the same thing anymore, these people could be flexing that off the easiest seasons which I didn't even play, so I imagine I could have easily gotten to masters as well if all you need is a top 10 and you're positive RP. To add, I think Apex is an amazing game for new players. Obviously you suck for a while, I didn't come to game until season 13, but there is so much content in the game it is overwhelming. I came from warzone and for this game to have 3 maps in rotation, 2 more that come in next splits or seasons, they have changed how these rotations work since I first started, but this much content makes the game feel so fresh, as well as learning all the characters and how to play with them. When I first started I was like shocked by how much was in the game, meanwhile the entire community was complaining about not enough content and how stale the game felt lol.
This always has felt like that..either i get rolled by better players or they just happen to rock master/pred badges..mind you, I normally hang in plat. It's probably one of the worst matchmaking I've seen in a bit. I 100% agree with what you said. Apex SBMM trying to manipulate me to play as long as possible is precisely why I take long breaks from playing. It's so frustrating & stressful to me especially when I'm trying to introduce my friends into playing because we just get destroyed every game. At this point I think it should be illegal to design SBMM like this in games bc of how manipulative and I would argue morally bankrupt it is.
I also agree and from what I've experienced it really feels like all the newer and all the lower end players are being put into lobbies with three stack Masters 4ks 20 bombs and then they're having to compete with that which is not only causing a lot of people to quit the game. But it's also causing a lot of people to cheat and feel the need to cheat as well. It's the entire cheating situation because now these less skilled players are fighting these high skilled players to the point where high skilled players are getting in and they're wrecking everybody. And then you have the mid-skill players that are now fake high skilled players because they're now scripting as well because they were half decent and now they're just not. But they don't want to quit the game they want to continue but the game's not getting any better. So they decided to cheat
I totally feel this, I am not top percent anything but I have been playing for a long time and have put many hours into the game.. can completely relate to this 5:54 and I feel like I want to enjoy apex but I normally log on sit in the lobby for like 10 minutes then close it out for another game! I’m not saying I’m the best but I do normally get into sweatier lobbies but never could I imagine having the stats that I am seeing most of these players at, and don’t want to play Ranked in order to have have a game with players at or near my skill level. I don’t think there are enough players to put 3 stacks in their own lobbies 7:04 Apex’s numbers are staggering at the moment so I guess it’s up to how they decide to fix the game that will either make or break them.

The trick is to not play for a week and return, the first two games you get will be really easy because they want to increase player retention by making you think you can win
Even old veteran players leave the game, i had 7 other people I'd queue up with who invited me to play around season 2, now I am the only one left playing because they cant stand the game not because it has bad gunplay or outright doesn't work, but because the amount of cheaters, 6/9 maners, lack of content and terrible matchmaking makes them quit

Bro I feel this way but on the opposite side, my teammates are generally not very good which has become so evident when I see sub level 50 accounts as my teammates so often and I’m a level prestige 450. I was under the impression SBMM is based on your last 20 games but I’m consistently getting 4-5 kill games with 1K-2K dmg when my teammates have 50dmg -350 dmg with one teammate having possibly being a bit better but nothing is super fun, it’s just bizarre It just doesn’t make sense
As someone who has been top 10 ranked and top 100 multiple times. When I ask my irl friends to hop on apex instead of cod like they normally play they tell me apex is just too hard. It’s a really high skill ceiling game and they don’t want to or can’t put in the time to get better at it. If they would just base SBMM on KD from the beginning then players will eventually find themselves in equal lobbies. But it’s too far gone and idk if there will be another surge of new players. They need to release some major gameplay changes and then do a lot of advertising to get new players. Keep a strict KD SBMM. Add a creative gamemode like Fortnite did to keep it alive. Fortnite has more players on custom community maps than in the normal game. The game has been out for 5 years. It needs something new.
Walked away for good played season 4-12 stepped away came back 19- beginning of 20 and made the final decision to leave with absolutely no desire to come back even with the lifeline rework and time I’ve put in the game I’m content with writing it off at this point the devs don’t care about making a good game just keeping you consumed so you spend as much time as possible and in turn spend more money it’s more stressful than it is fun at this point I’m good with TF2 for an FPS
im not sure what to make of my experience. i def agree with you somethings weird. for context i stopped playing cod because of SBMM and because of being implemented in the first place i never am buying another game ever again from that franchise, been running XDefiant with no SBMM and im always top fragging, usually never below top 2 slots on my teams. generally speaking thats been my experience in most shooters, i tend to have great accuracy and i been pc gaming since i was like 7 years old. My Apex experience is diff in general from other shooters. the insanely high TTK was a huge hurdle to overcome. previously, i was always that guy to aim and hit first, so I would usually win fights in other games. apex changed everything about how I play FPS. what i do know is that i see actual bots in a match of tdm once in a blue moon, but the bots are very real and its eerie when you get in a bot lobby with only a few other humans. pubs definitely do feel easier (in general) than ranked, but in general its really really hard to gauge my skill level. Not being able to gauge how good you are because your experience is so mixed is a symptom of sbmm though 100%. Ranked always ends me up in plat, i def am getting better at movement and outplaying but accuracy is my strongest attribute for sure. Some games, even in some sweaty ass TDM games, i can only manage to get 2 kills. Other games, it's like they all line up in front of me. K/D hovers just above 1 every season. Although deadass it doesn't feel that way based on how inconsistent things are with my matchmaking experience. SBMM gotta go for good bro. People will pay infinitely more money into a game they just have good clean honest fun in, not some casino-type "buy skins to win" bullshit match fixing ass "we consulted with a psychologist" ass mind game manipulator "the player is the guinea pig" ass shit. THE SOLUTION IS SIMPLE THO. DONT BUY COSMETIC ITEMS AND SQUEEZE THEM INTO MAKING CHANGE!

if you have 1KD and 5% win sbmm does his job, remember that for a 20bomb, you have something like 1guy having fun and 19 going back to lobby. I joined private lobbys with people exclusively coming from my region (somewhere in africa), the pool levels were very disparate, and at the end, the kills repartition was always the same, the same 10 same guys took 90% of the kills and the others were waiting for the game to end :). I played since S2, and I know we won't get these feelings again where everyone were on the same foot
Great video and aggree with you , i just played Solos this season and prob today last day of Apex until comes back again , it solves the 3 stacking issue but adds few others to it...the matchmaking is both SBMM & EOMM. I have 5k kills this season and trough playing this all games the game wants to control you what you do and how good you are but as well wants to improve you overtime. I like the sweaty lobbies and play against all this players but ofc i would like some air to breath sometimes and when i got this time is always against very bad players where even i feel bad killing them. Then again i go trough 5 - 10 matches until i got them again. There is still people falling of the map all the time to abuse bot lobbys. If they die a lot of enough times they will get a bad lobby and it works with any KD , KD doesnt matter for Apex at all it doesnt tell 100% if you are good...i mean i have 2.0 KD but still see sometimes EU pros in my lobbies where most of them have like 5kd+...it wants you to keep engagned most of the time and doesnt care if you die all the time it just gives you bots as exvcuse and then you drop a 20 or so then again for next 1 - 2h the same story against same sweats.
It hurts the playerbase on just a other level , this is why few shotters came up like HyperScape and died after 3 months , sure cheating was a issue but SBMM was a much bigger one...
I feel ya, I’m level 160 now , but starting off I was in lobbies with level 400s when I was level 3, I can’t play pubs cuz my teammates die in under 2min and quit so I’m solo anyways , plus with the cheating it’s just no fun, I use to play a few hours a week, now I play like a few hours a month cuz I hate the game

the problem with apex is fixed matchmaking and sbmm. they purposely put decent players in matches they are unlikely to win then give them a bot lobby every couple of matches. they dont realize people will quit after 7 games of getting rolled before they get that fixed "win"

Even deathmatch games my team looses by 15-20 kills the majority of the time.
There is matchmaking but whatever metrics they’re using is just wrong and average Joe will just turn it off.
Either brand new with legit bots or hardcore 3 stack rolling the lobbies the vast majority of players get screwed over

As someone who took a year long break, it feels really bad still. I quit because of the pred 3 stacks every single game. I understand stuff changes, but sweating every game when I wanna do fun/stupid stuff with my buddy is nigh impossible bc I have to carry him(and a random low level usually). I've never gotten past plat4, I get why I'd fight diamond players every game but 3 stack preds/masters, and people ximming out the wazoo? Makes it hard to enjoy apex

I am not getting Pred 3 stacks and i am now in Plat 2... I killed people who had the Masters banner on their box and i was killed by a guy with pred banner but he wasn't 3 stacking. . But if you never soloQ maybe you should try.. When i go with my low skill friend we get masters way often..I did diamond like 6 times befoe s17 since s17 i didn't really tried. Now i started trying that's why i am at plat 2 but only have few hours till split. lol... I don't think i'm gonna make it. xD I got plat 2 with 265 ish games. The overall player skill has slowly creeped up to the point that an average player today would be a super sweat 5 years ago. I remember taking beating after beating trying to learn this game when I started (season 5) and I couldn't even imagine trying to start fresh now.
I played solos for several hours last night and I could count on one hand the number of easy fights I got into. Then on top of that I felt bad about killing those people because it was obvious they didn't know what they were doing. Then the other 100+ 1v1s I got into felt like the fight of my life.
I don't mind locking it in and going hard sometimes, but having to sit up straight with my face 3 inches away from the screen to even be competitive for hours at a time is exhausting. With that being said I think the crowd of casual players that would get on wanting to just relax after work/school and never really took the game seriously are long gone.
The way I see it for myself is I need to keep playing FPS somewhat consistently so when the next big game drops I'll be ready. If we ever see a big launch like Fortnite, Apex, ect.. then you got maybe 6 months to get in there and make a name for yourself. Take any longer than that and you missed the boat.

As someone who hops game to game mastering the mechanics , I agree people are a lot better but most of them still have horrible FPS habits that you can exploit in each FPS title .
Also people usually just stick to one game nowadays because their brains can’t handle learning another title.
I imagine another huge issue for player retention is the large number of legends/abilities and weapons now. I remember how overwhelming it was back in season 3 with only 11 legends and a pretty new player base. Now we have 26 Legends and a bunch more guns with unique features as well as the legend perk and evo shield system. Couple this with the incredibly sweaty player base and it's no wonder new players don't stick around.
Especially with you getting put against people that fight and they make it seem like their character is glitching while moving and they hit every shot

After every single win in ranked I get straight up thrown with 2 bots who just drop me hot into other 7 squads of bots and we instadie like not giving me even 350rp for a 10+kp win in garbage plat lobbies wasn't already miserable enough, they just want to have some rp cashback on top of it like i haven't earned it sweating the shit out in previous game.

SBMM in general is what is killing the game to casuals and new players. Ranked should be the only playlist that has strict SBMM. Also, I think the lack of content is what Apex suffers with as well. A lot of BR games try to implement GAAS but won't put in the effort like Fortnite dropping new content and skins at a rapid pace. Don't see a lot of folks mention that Apex is still plagued by loot boxes and locks the best skins/heirlooms behind a random paywall.
It's an illusion, there is no SBMM. The only SBMM is Ranked based based on +/- 4 or so sub-ranks. That's about it.

Maybe there are just noobs Q, and then the rest of us, that's about it. I think they prioritise Q times over actual skill now. It's like the first 60 are qued together and then based on some kind of skill match teams, but it doesn't split qs into several separate qs. Technically, there is SBMM when it comes to creating teams, but there is no SBMM when splitting into separate matches unless there is only one noob level for entirely new players based on other factors but not skill. I'm not sure if I make much sense here. SBMM for splitting qs was there last year or so, but not now.
its NOT SBMM. if there would be a proper SBMM you wouldnt face too strong or weak players. What you guys talk about in the game is EOMM. Thats a huge difference if you look it up, its meant to "keep" players queuing by giving them an easy lobby after losing multiple harder games so you "theoretically" get a confidence boost after shtting on newbies just to get shat on
I've had a love/hate relationship with this game for a long time now. I've put 1000 hours in since release playing nothing but solo queue ranked. (Never really played pubs). I usually play just enough to get diamond/masters each split/season and I do have to say.. It is getting way harder. Especially the last few seasons. my k/d is only 1.4 since I only queue solo ranked but I get matched with 3 stack preds almost every game. Not to mention the amount of cheaters. Holy God. My friends have never been able to join me because they play the game for a little while and realize how much of a skill gap there is and quit. It might be me or it might be the game but either way, it's getting harder and harder to log into this game now.
Literally I am in the exact same situation as you, I havent even played the last 3 days because I stopped caring, because I have put enough time in to say that its not worth my mental health to endure the punishment of simply playing Apex Legends. So sad. 5.5 thousand hours
I'm thinking about quitting too,it's just not fun anymore.Balancing school and work just takes a lot out of me and when I want to unwind and have fun this game gives me the opposite experience and makes my mental worse.I love the gameplay but there's so many issues that haven't been fixed and they continue to make the game worse.

Feels like there is no winning. As a ranked only player there is never a good time to play. Start of the season is just everyone on the same rank. Mid season the smurfs come out and before end of split the late rankers and smurfs make it almost impossible to get a game with people of your rank.
I have noticed a difference in the games the later in the season.
I don't play as often as your average player so I think I'm a kind of smurf in the later season because I've been steadily increasing my rank all season just not as fast as other players and I always end up playing against and with players that don't seem as good as me by the end of the split.

100% agree. I’ve been saying this for many seasons. If you play duos as a stack you play against other stacks. If you’re playing pubs as a stack you play against other stacks regardless of skill level. If you play solo duo/trio you get into a pool on randoms to make ur team

I’ve “studied” (if you can call it that) matchmaking on Apex for like 5 years at this point. I’ve done this across 6-7 different accounts (with each account trying to achieve different MMRs). All of my tests were done in pubs.
My take aways have been:
-Matchmaking is indeed a ladder. The top of this ladder is comprised of lobbies who are typically all 4k 20 bomb pred level players.
-MMR decay is real. Not playing for a bit lowers your MMR. This is why your first game isn’t as sweaty.
-Accounts with lots of “data” (kills, wins, damage, etc) tend to go down the ladder slower than accounts with less data. So on my main account (99k kills) I need to have MORE poor performances to get an easier lobby, than I would on an account with less experience.
This is problematic because it creates a “valley” that people can fall into and feel stuck. There are a lot of people who have been playing a few years and are above average- these players will constantly be playing in lobbies of the top 3% and it can feel grueling. Being above average but losing more BECAUSE you are above average does not feel good.
I tried to get into Apex like three times in the past few years and I just couldn't ever. People are so insanely sweaty in that game while I barely know where to go or how to shoot, I thought ranked would fix that issue but nope not at all, doesn't make a damn difference if I play at my broze rank or if I play quick match.
And this is coming from a person that loves competitive games, I have thousands of hours in CS, Valorant and Siege combined, but the main difference between these games and Apex is that these games did let me play against people on roughly my level and I got to actually shoot some people, hit some (even if basic) clips and feel the sense of progression, whereas in Apex I'm just getting stomped every single time I see an enemy. There's only so many times before you just say "screw it I don't wanna run for 15 minutes just to get lasered by a dude"

Totally agree with this. I played a pubs game yesterday and ended up with two teammates who were playing their 7th game of Apex ever. We ended up dying to a pred with 30k on horizon.
yea, honestly no idea why i play this game but i do. every game is very competitive and i always die to people with 20b 4k, despite being nowhere close that skill level myself. i barely have 3ks on two characters lmao. it’s just crazy, ive always thought that the low player base is to blame, like the lack of players at my skill level on my servers etc etc, but i’ve been saying that even 2-3 years ago, which the game was definitely more alive back then. it’s just going more and more downhill, less players, less casuals and the only players sticking around are the ones actually good at the game. often times i find it hard to even get a single kill or two in a game. i’m around level 550~ and it’s so hard to enjoy the game….. the content and friends i have are the only reason i touch it. probably will end up quitting it again
I am player who actively play couple of seasons and usually end season around platinum 3. I was very excited when they announcements Solo Game Mode. In one of my first game i had 8 kills and around 2k dmg so i have hope for my first 20 kills game. However in my future games i always dies from pred/master or 20 kills badge player. Usually end game with max 3/4 kill, very frustrating. Basiclly one decent game and my lobby is unpleyable to this day.
I started playing this season, I pretty much avoid solos because I'm just not good enough to fight the 20 kill, 4k people I get put up against

I would say that I’m a similar skill to you, I get about a 20 bomb or something close every week or so playing an hour or 2 a day. I agree that the new player experience is horrible, but as a more advanced player I can ubderstand why I’m in high skill lobbies so I don’t really have a problem with that. What I’ve been doing is not playing ranked at the start of the season and then making my way up later to a get a more chill experience in the game where I don’t have to sweat like crazy to do decent
I noticed it too, I am getting put up with with preds every 10th game, and masters every other game.
Highest I ever got was gold, so I have no idea why mm is like this for me. My average dmg is now 600 instead of the 1000 like before, and I don't get to even play half my games cuz I get melted by a beam.
Instead of playing 15-20 games a day, I now play 8-10 cuz I don't have the patience because I get so mad that I constantly have to face 3 stacks who work smartly by 3 man rushing 1 person at a time.
And it seems like I get team mates that are either as bad as me, or worse which doesn't help at all.
Finally, someone who agrees this game has EOMM. The amount of times I got shot down for suggesting Apex has it is crazy. My experience had always been drop in and survive for 5 mins if I'm lucky, then RIGHT when I'm about to quit or say "Last game for me" suddenly I'm in a much fairer lobby where I can perform well yet still have some risks. Then after that win it's right back to dealing with sweats. On the rare occassion I'll have a string of easy games though. Respawn has always denied the existence of EOMM but it's there and you have to be blind not to see it.
As a season 0 vet who quit playing for almost 2 years. You're right, people have gotten better but people have also stopped playing. The problem is SBMM doesn't know how to handle this. It doesn't know how to create fair and balanced lobbies. Add in people using CFGs and Aim Assist (it's soft aimbot, deal with it), then it becomes even harder. I don't blame people who get better at the game organically, I blame the system for putting those players in my matches when I'm nowhere near their level.
A lot of shooters deal with this snowball effect. A new shooter comes out and it's fun for a while as people learn the ropes. Then a few players drop off after the wanderlust phase while others stay and get better, this creates a bridge gap on the skill curve until eventually less casuals are playing and less newer players are joining. This is where SBMM breaks because it is now struggling to find players around your skill level. Another issue is how quickly Apex wants to get you into a game so that you keep playing, only problem is you're being thrown into an absolute mess of a lobby.
I know this comparison has been done to death, but I'm going to bring up Fortnite especially because of no-build. The new player experience in Fortnite was a breath of fresh air, it doesn't chuck you into the deep end and expect you to learn how to swim. And even when the new player protection wears off, you're still not facing people who are gods at the game. I was reluctant to play it because I'm no good at builiding, but as soon as I heard about no-build me and my friend who is also an ex Apex player jumped in and we had a blast!
Does it take a bit longer to get into games? Yes, but it means that matchmaking has time to think and get us into a decent lobby. Losing in Apex feels like you're gone in the blink of an eye and didn't stand a chance. Losing in Fortnite feels like you just weren't as good and your aim could have been better. It's easy to see which game handles SBMM and new players better.
I wish respawn would watch this video. As an above average player I avoid pubs like the plague. It leaves me with the worst feeling of no matter how hard I try I will get stomped 4 out of 5 matches. The 5th match being the pitty match the game gives me for getting destroyed the prior 4. Then after I do good that one match it’s another 4 matches of getting smacked. And it’s a shame because if Apex wasn’t like this it would hands down be my favorite FPS. It has so much potential but “casual” does not exist anymore. Back in the Halo 3 days and original modern warfare games we had casual FPS games where you could sit back and not sweat to hard and still enjoy yourself to the point of playing for 10 hours straight and not getting burnt out. Also this whole SBMM thing literally throws the concept of a ranked mode in the trash. The way it used to be was if you want to play people of your skill level you play ranked. And if you wanted a more varied and casual experience you play pubs. Of course even in pubs you would occasionally still play against “try-hards” but all the fun matches in between made occasionally getting smacked worth it. But now for me pubs is more sweaty than ranked which literally makes zero sense lol I could rant about this forever.
this is how i felt after 3 months of not playing. when i got back, i felt SOOO slow, and out played. after some time i kinda got back to it but still felt like everyone is way better now.
yea I rarely boot up the game maybe once every month to jump on with some friends and even in silver ranked lobbys i get masters players really puts a damper on the game tbh

Matchmaking is the main reason that I cannot enjoy the game no matter how much I try to remain positive or how well I try to play, it's also why I quit. I don't have it in me to support this game anymore

Bro you are so right with this topic. I quit playing apex season 21 three weeks after launch because I got so fed up of constantly getting slammed. Also with this matchmaking it feels impossible to progress at all. I have 1.5k games played lifetime and my total wins in br are 38. I put in the effort and time to get better, but it doesnt matter because i can't compete with pred three stacks.
Got on and while I have 1-2 4ks ever and I was okay at it got on for the first time seriously in months with the mindset of practicing i gave up after 3 games I die so fast even in solos that I cannot play without homies anymore it’s just not fun

Like this discussion and I agree 💯 % I think if you get in a lobby with preds as new players. there should be a bounty system for everyone in the game to collect and kill them and show where they are near in the map ? Maybe it’s stupid but just a thought
For the 20 bombs, I got one recently and once past a certain skill ceiling, it's all luck (need 80% of your fight to be easy, KC or Olympus being the current map, lucky third parties, team that doesn't steal your kills and everyone to just jump on you for no reason 1 by 1) and if you fumble that game, you'll have your chance in another 1000 games from now it's ridiculous

Maybe I am weird, but I love crazy difficult games, dropping hot, and the mess that it becomes, specifically now in quads, for me it is just a blast, to be able to survive those 3-6 teams that have landed hot with you, is the best of the game.
As someone who has played since season 1 and a decent player, the current state of the game is something else. I'm the same as you, it's so frustrating to try and play and get destroyed by stacked teams, cheaters or getting stuck with teammates who want to hot drop on ranked, die and then get mad about it. There needs to be more balance to keep long time players on, and not scare away new players. I can imagine trying to get better as a new player in 2024, learn the mechanics...but be killed all the time by much better players.
I agree with this commentary for sure. I'm so confused at the people in charge of matchmaking... Getting the most amount of players on your game should be as simple as making a great game that people enjoy. Why are they trying to quantize the players? It takes away almost all of the reward for putting time into a game; the harder you try, the harder your daily experience gets. Thats exactly how to make people give up on the game, or just start cheating because somehow that became a realistic option for so many apex players.
There should be more randomness in terms of what percentile of any stat/overall playtime you have a chance at running into. New players should be protected but they should also get a taste of what it takes to be a good apex player by consistently interacting with more experienced players, but long term players with 1K plus hours should earn the reward of being above average and should succeed slightly more often than they did starting off. Bc right now if you have decent stats, you die to pros and streamers on a daily/weekly basis even though you have only met that level of gameplay on your very best day/week of playing the game.
Not to mention, being on mnk (because its truly more immersive and enjoyable, and because movement mechanics are fun and rewarding to learn) just makes things 40% harder since 40% of damage taken was likely due to a computer program and not one of your competitors.
Even if they don't rework matchmaking I at least wish they could make private matches similar to rocket league/fortnite so I can practice movement or do small matches with my friends since I don't have 32 homies who would agree to play the game
While I have zero interest in playing XDefiant- I hope their stance on sbmm becomes the norm.
Everyone playing these FPS is complaining about SBMM when they solo queue or try a new game like these examples,
but the people who choose to keep sbmm in the game pretend we just don't know what we want and complain for the sake of it.
My single biggest problem right now is that there is zero punishment for abandoning a pubs match early. I am sick and tired of being top 3 after first ring close. I'm tired of teammates disconnecting after just being downed. They're not even dead just downed. And every other team in my match does it too. Everyone disconnects causing players that would normally stick around keeping multiple teams alive to dwindle. When I first started playing you had a 10 minute penalty. You could revive your teammates you could clutch but now if you don't hard carry and I mean babysit the daylights out of them so they don't perish then they are guaranteed to leave. If you don't hot drop in a pubs game then you will not see a single squad until top 3. There won't be any left after the first 3 minutes and that is my experience with every game. I want to get some badges on the new legends yet I can't because it feels like I drop into an empty lobby unless my randos actually decide to be near the hot drop. In that case I have a bit more fun but you still have the issue of every other team disconnecting as they go down too.

Not sure if you’ll see this, but you can permanently remove optics in mixtape modes! Go into the weapon selection menu and middle click on any loadout and you can choose your optic or just remove it.
So personally I go through big gaps of not playing. Part of what causes this is because it feels so hard to improve because there's sweats at every corner no matter the level. I'm tired of playing with preds before I'm ready to deal with them lol. So yes, just agree there's definitely a matchmaking issue

Typically, I don't comment on "complaint" videos, but I certainly agree with your points. I took an 8-month hiatus and just got back onto apex to tons of sweat lobbies. I started playing the game on 2nd day of release and am half decent, I'm no match against the average lobby. Everyone who kills me has the flashiest banner with ungodly amounts of elims. I'm nowhere near as good to be placed in lobbies with them, yet each match I am getting my ass handed to me on a silver platter. The argument of insufficient players of my skill is certainly valid and might never be solved, as the community grows to be better and better each day. It's just a vicious cycle lmao.
Going through the same stuff right now I am around the masters level of skill and I feel like if I don't sweat my ass off, I die off drop every game and having teammates that can't think for themselves doesn't help when I'm going against three stack predator teams
Your 100% right I did this awhile ago to try and get a buddy into Apex and I was gonna grind it out with him till he was competent so he could solo Q his way up the skill gap. I made fresh everything and threw, then I was gonna intentionally not sweat and play bad let him lead ect. and just give advice. after the placement matches or whatever the lobbies were very similar to if I was on my main which has like 4.5k hours into it.
There is also 100% engagement built into then SBMM if you notice your first two games of the day you are very likely to have minimum 1 solid team mate as good or better than you so you do well and wanna keep playing. I have averaged like 4.5 hours a day for the last two and half years and there are so many conspiracies I have about the match making especially pubs its really not very good anymore as a solo its a rough experience.
i was playing some team deathmatch today and i was using Rev and prowler and I was doing pretty well, pubs haven't been the easiest but for some reason I've been doing quite well in solos despite me not liking the solos format. But i remember when it was season 5 or 6 when i was like "everyone is sweating", and it kept getting worse and worse from there, but now unlike before killing masters and preds is easier then ever before because they're so common
my main account is literally unplayable. i often get completely rolled now by enemy players and yet i get players on my team that are clearly lower skill level. i cannot have a chance at top 5 unless im popping off and winning fights i normally shouldnt. its been like this for 2 seasons now ish. right now its at its worst.

Heres the issue, strict SBMM is simply ranked. If you enforce strict SBMM no one will have a good experience, everyone will just have a mediocre experience where improvement isnt rewarded as ur enemies simply get harder, at least in ranked you get elo. This is why SBMM as a concept in pubs is flawed.
I think they should remove sbmm in its entirety from pubs. The majority of the player base is mediocre to "bad" players. It removes the need for high skill players to smurf to have fun (which ruins pubs) and lower skilled players will eventually have luck on their side to win as their opponents are just random. Higher skilled player would win more, lower skilled player would win less, but no one would be stuck in any ridiculous loop. Preds wont make new accs or seek new exploits to pub stomp.
Starting off is going to be really hard in a really hard game, thats just the reality of it. Its how gaming has been until warzone and apex came along and we had sbmm, and yet the match making experience is somehow worse than old cod, cs 1.6, pubg etc. We can have an optional below lv50 queue tho.
I’m around lvl 30 in apex and it sucks because I’m trying to get better but I get lobbies with lvl 200+ player and I will die to someone lower then level 100 1/20 games it feels like I started mostly playing mixtape games and even in half those games I would go against apex predators and people with thousands of kills making it hard to have fun even titanfall has better matchmaking then this and it’s annoying as hell going up against g100 pilots but it happens less then apex
I feel you,I'm a veteran player and even I'm having trouble keeping up,there is always preds in mixtape and normal pubs now(mixtape is not fun anymore,I played when it was really fun)I recommend you get into communities online where veterans are willing to help newer players out because other than that it will get really difficult for you.The skill gap in this game is huge and you will start to notice it quickly.If you have friends who are good then that's even better,if you don't then you're basically screwed now 😭

Best thing they can do about it is add Three Strikes back as a permament mode / replacing current form of pubs with a modified version of Three Strikes. Then they could even lower the SBMM on lobbies, cause no one is gonna care that much about it when you have 2 lives.
I really hate this game. Most of my games are me throwing because my teammates either drop super hot and die instantly, or they drop at the other end of the map to loot all game.

My cousin has played to plat a few times now, I never have, I’m not a ranked player never have been. But I have played since day 1 I have an old account. but he swears up and down that only when he plays with me literally the only thing we die to is 20 bomb four ks and whole pred squads, and it’s like lobby’s full of em. It’s so bad for me and I have no idea why, I’m starting to think I’m getting punished for being an old player or something
Well I’m on Xbox so I’m in Console lobbies and I just past the 100 Day mark on play time on this game. I just got my first 4k damage Badge on pathfinder Recently. Im hard stuck plat at the moment my aim is really good but my positioning still needs a little bit of work and my communication needs a lot of work I don’t talk at all to my teammates .

I started playing for the first time last week and I got wiped every game in solos. Even in trios I was teamed with beginners like myself trying to face off against 3 stack predators or seasoned players. I already uninstalled, but I keep wondering if its even worth getting better💀
It is ridiculous I get teammates who are always gold, bronze, silver players. And I'm against people who are masters or predators. My highest ranked was masters. Now my lobbies are awful. And I feel like I'm being punished for being a above average players. I'm now stuck in platinum in ranked.
What if they, stop the movement for pubs, Like tap strafing or mantle jumps, or super glide. Only keep the wall bounce.
A lot of people do not understand the problem is server population, there is not enough people in the 3+ kd range for them to have their own lobbies so they get put with everyone else, no change will eliminate the fact that there isnt enough people on the game
There are a few thoughts I've had about Apex and about games in general.
First, Apex is never going to have another discovery period again. That was the least sweaty/easiest time to play the game because everyone is trying out and learning the game, so there's no real meta strats out there or practiced people to run into. As for SBMM, while it is a problem, the way I see it is it isn't the sole contributor to the whole pub stomper problem with Predators stacks in normal lobbies. You have to consider the size of the lobby, and it is pretty much inherent to every BR. 60 people to a lobby all within the same division is never going to be successful even half the time, and only gets worse the higher you get. Considering region, time, player count, player rank, queue time, and a multitude of other things, a Predator ranked player is going to see queue times well into a better part of a hour before filling that queue. So the MM system expands the queue parameters until they end up in the avg silver/gold lobby and become the dreaded pub stomper that people post on Reddit asking "why is this guy in my lobby"
As a new player to fps all together... it was rough early on.
But I spent my time in the firing range. I'm at about 650 hours now and am able to consistently get 70+ in my ranked matches. I reached gold finally and am just about to get reset.
It's fun, but not as fun when you find a group of people that want to be consistently learning about the game.
I think there are more newer players than it seems. When I land hot in solo's it is all people with 10k+ kills and 20 bombs and just the sweatiest people, but when you get past this onslaught most of the rest of the game is just lower level players who didn't land hot just trying to play the game instead of die in 30 seconds. I am just an average player, I get hard stuck plat every season solo q'ing, it's like I get below average players the entire way up to gold, then mid plat is where I get all former masters and 20 bomb players. Those lower rank games has these actual newer players which will sometimes surprise me how tf they managed to get here. I will always suspect they are cheating to then it is obvious they are real. It is really just pubs that make the sbmm terrible for the new player. But if this new player is a controller player...it's not as much a skill gap to learn.
As well, there are many content creators that don't look that good to me. They have like 40k kills and if I would die to them I would think God why is this guy in my lobby, he obviously is so much better than me, but I watch these people and they are mildly above average at best, the amount of time someone plays doesn't equal skill. Also, a master's badge doesn't mean the same thing anymore, these people could be flexing that off the easiest seasons which I didn't even play, so I imagine I could have easily gotten to masters as well if all you need is a top 10 and you're positive RP.
To add, I think Apex is an amazing game for new players. Obviously you suck for a while, I didn't come to game until season 13, but there is so much content in the game it is overwhelming. I came from warzone and for this game to have 3 maps in rotation, 2 more that come in next splits or seasons, they have changed how these rotations work since I first started, but this much content makes the game feel so fresh, as well as learning all the characters and how to play with them. When I first started I was like shocked by how much was in the game, meanwhile the entire community was complaining about not enough content and how stale the game felt lol.
This always has felt like that..either i get rolled by better players or they just happen to rock master/pred badges..mind you, I normally hang in plat. It's probably one of the worst matchmaking I've seen in a bit. I 100% agree with what you said. I recently started posting..and getting good games to record is hard..I am given teammates that seem to have never played the game, meanwhile I'm put up against players that have played this game for years. Apex SBMM trying to manipulate me to play as long as possible is precisely why I take long breaks from playing. It's so frustrating & stressful to me especially when I'm trying to introduce my friends into playing because we just get destroyed every game. At this point I think it should be illegal to design SBMM like this in games bc of how manipulative and I would argue morally bankrupt it is.
I also agree and from what I've experienced it really feels like all the newer and all the lower end players are being put into lobbies with three stack Masters 4ks 20 bombs and then they're having to compete with that which is not only causing a lot of people to quit the game. But it's also causing a lot of people to cheat and feel the need to cheat as well. It's the entire cheating situation because now these less skilled players are fighting these high skilled players to the point where high skilled players are getting in and they're wrecking everybody. And then you have the mid-skill players that are now fake high skilled players because they're now scripting as well because they were half decent and now they're just not. But they don't want to quit the game they want to continue but the game's not getting any better. So they decided to cheat

I totally feel this, I am not top percent anything but I have been playing for a long time and have put many hours into the game.. can completely relate to this 5:54 and I feel like I want to enjoy apex but I normally log on sit in the lobby for like 10 minutes then close it out for another game! I’m not saying I’m the best but I do normally get into sweatier lobbies but never could I imagine having the stats that I am seeing most of these players at, and don’t want to play Ranked in order to have have a game with players at or near my skill level. I don’t think there are enough players to put 3 stacks in their own lobbies 7:04 Apex’s numbers are staggering at the moment so I guess it’s up to how they decide to fix the game that will either make or break them.

The trick is to not play for a week and return, the first two games you get will be really easy because they want to increase player retention by making you think you can win
Even old veteran players leave the game, i had 7 other people I'd queue up with who invited me to play around season 2, now I am the only one left playing because they cant stand the game not because it has bad gunplay or outright doesn't work, but because the amount of cheaters, 6/9 maners, lack of content and terrible matchmaking makes them quit
I agree so much with this video. Apex def needs to improve the sbmm and matchingmaking, Hopefully respawn does a operation health and fixes the games issues for a season

Bro I feel this way but on the opposite side, my teammates are generally not very good which has become so evident when I see sub level 50 accounts as my teammates so often and I’m a level prestige 450. I was under the impression SBMM is based on your last 20 games but I’m consistently getting 4-5 kill games with 1K-2K dmg when my teammates have 50dmg -350 dmg with one teammate having possibly being a bit better but nothing is super fun, it’s just bizarre

As someone who has been top 10 ranked and top 100 multiple times. When I ask my irl friends to hop on apex instead of cod like they normally play they tell me apex is just too hard. It’s a really high skill ceiling game and they don’t want to or can’t put in the time to get better at it. If they would just base SBMM on KD from the beginning then players will eventually find themselves in equal lobbies. But it’s too far gone and idk if there will be another surge of new players. They need to release some major gameplay changes and then do a lot of advertising to get new players. Keep a strict KD SBMM. Add a creative gamemode like Fortnite did to keep it alive. Fortnite has more players on custom community maps than in the normal game. The game has been out for 5 years. It needs something new.

Walked away for good played season 4-12 stepped away came back 19- beginning of 20 and made the final decision to leave with absolutely no desire to come back even with the lifeline rework and time I’ve put in the game I’m content with writing it off at this point the devs don’t care about making a good game just keeping you consumed so you spend as much time as possible and in turn spend more money it’s more stressful than it is fun at this point I’m good with TF2 for an FPS

im not sure what to make of my experience. i def agree with you somethings weird. for context i stopped playing cod because of SBMM and because of being implemented in the first place i never am buying another game ever again from that franchise, been running XDefiant with no SBMM and im always top fragging, usually never below top 2 slots on my teams. generally speaking thats been my experience in most shooters, i tend to have great accuracy and i been pc gaming since i was like 7 years old.
My Apex experience is diff in general from other shooters. the insanely high TTK was a huge hurdle to overcome. previously, i was always that guy to aim and hit first, so I would usually win fights in other games. apex changed everything about how I play FPS. what i do know is that i see actual bots in a match of tdm once in a blue moon, but the bots are very real and its eerie when you get in a bot lobby with only a few other humans. pubs definitely do feel easier (in general) than ranked, but in general its really really hard to gauge my skill level. Not being able to gauge how good you are because your experience is so mixed is a symptom of sbmm though 100%. Ranked always ends me up in plat, i def am getting better at movement and outplaying but accuracy is my strongest attribute for sure. Some games, even in some sweaty ass TDM games, i can only manage to get 2 kills. Other games, it's like they all line up in front of me. K/D hovers just above 1 every season. Although deadass it doesn't feel that way based on how inconsistent things are with my matchmaking experience.
SBMM gotta go for good bro. People will pay infinitely more money into a game they just have good clean honest fun in, not some casino-type "buy skins to win" bullshit match fixing ass "we consulted with a psychologist" ass mind game manipulator "the player is the guinea pig" ass shit.
THE SOLUTION IS SIMPLE THO. DONT BUY COSMETIC ITEMS AND SQUEEZE THEM INTO MAKING CHANGE!

As an utterly dogshit player, I can confirm that I have been killed by more threestack preds than makes sense, like aren't there only supposed to be 750? It feels like I've gotten killed by them way more times than that.
if you have 1KD and 5% win sbmm does his job, remember that for a 20bomb, you have something like 1guy having fun and 19 going back to lobby. I joined private lobbys with people exclusively coming from my region (somewhere in africa), the pool levels were very disparate, and at the end, the kills repartition was always the same, the same 10 same guys took 90% of the kills and the others were waiting for the game to end :). I played since S2, and I know we won't get these feelings again where everyone were on the same foot
Great video and aggree with you , i just played Solos this season and prob today last day of Apex until comes back again , it solves the 3 stacking issue but adds few others to it...the matchmaking is both SBMM & EOMM.
I have 5k kills this season and trough playing this all games the game wants to control you what you do and how good you are but as well wants to improve you overtime.
I like the sweaty lobbies and play against all this players but ofc i would like some air to breath sometimes and when i got this time is always against very bad players where even i feel bad killing them. Then again i go trough 5 - 10 matches until i got them again.
There is still people falling of the map all the time to abuse bot lobbys. If they die a lot of enough times they will get a bad lobby and it works with any KD , KD doesnt matter for Apex at all it doesnt tell 100% if you are good...i mean i have 2.0 KD but still see sometimes EU pros in my lobbies where most of them have like 5kd+...it wants you to keep engagned most of the time and doesnt care if you die all the time it just gives you bots as exvcuse and then you drop a 20 or so then again for next 1 - 2h the same story against same sweats.
It hurts the playerbase on just a other level , this is why few shotters came up like HyperScape and died after 3 months , sure cheating was a issue but SBMM was a much bigger one...
I feel ya, I’m level 160 now , but starting off I was in lobbies with level 400s when I was level 3, I can’t play pubs cuz my teammates die in under 2min and quit so I’m solo anyways , plus with the cheating it’s just no fun, I use to play a few hours a week, now I play like a few hours a month cuz I hate the game
